  1. The answer is probably quite simple. Women weren't allowed to be members and if you weren't a member you couldn't officially get served at the bar. I don't think bar staff can be bothered to check if strangers are members these days, nor can people be bothered to sign in.
  2. My sentiments entirely Keith. Great News for the local community. I well remember the "Crockery Lift", didn't they used to call them Dumb Waiters. Who did we put in it to surprise them upstairs ? Was it Hindy ! ---------- Post added 21-11-2014 at 23:10 ---------- Back Row - David Henstock, Mick Rawson (Walt), Steven Gawthorpe, Tony Atkinson, John Mortimer, Paul Smith , John Hindmarch (Hindy52) , Kevin Christian (Bantambuddy), Keith Ball (Hawkshead Boy),Alan Norton . Middle Row- Philip Nortcliffe, Paul Haywood, John Simms, Roy Crossey, Cliff Minnis, Mr.Haywood, Steven Hallam, Rodney Greenwood. Front Row - Andrew Pogson, Neil Smith, David Drury, Gary Parker. It was definitely 1967, I left BB in 1968.
  3. I think you are right about the year Terry, it was owler lane infants. Some of these kids were in your school year and some were in mine. Back row 2nd from right Heather Bailey, Back row 4th from left Elaine Spooner, 3rd row second right Stuart Burnham, 3rd row 2nd left Susan Barson, front row 1st left Susan Allott, front row 2nd left sandra somerset ?
  4. In the 1960's it went off in the morning at 7.30am, not sure about the afternoon exactly but I think it was about 4.15pm - 4.30pm
  5. Sad news. One of the all time Wednesday greats. My first match at Hillsborough on 15th March 1958 was I believe his first league game. I still have the programme.
  6. There is a grave plan at Sheffield Archives Shoreham Street.
  7. Do you mean Mick Thoday, and no its not him. Its Mr Stephenson an officer at 21st Boys Brigade Company . At the time he lived on Birdwell Road in Grimesthorpe.
  8. Others not already mentioned are Back row 2nd left, the late Brian Locker, far right Howard Quibell. Third row 3rd left John Simms, 9th left the late Graham Lee, 10th left John Stephenson. Second Row 1st left Mrs Stephenson, 8th left Mr Stephenson (not Mr Haywood) and front row far right Margaret Stephenson.
  9. Can any former Grimesthorpe BB members identify anyone from this 21st and 53rd BB Camp at Sheringham about 1962. Come on TFishcake and Hawkshead Boy you are pictured on here!
  10. The St Thomas church records are available to inspect at Sheffield Archives , on Shoreham Street .
  11. Sad news, I knew Karen as a teenager, through my friendship with Keith. My condolences to Keith and her family.
  12. That were nowt Bri. Look at Brightside lane on 25th June 2007. They had to pull 'em out wi helicopter. Look at this youtube clip about 2mins in.
  13. There certainly was another story to it. The year was 1963 and the fire was when the whole pattern shop on carlisle street went up in flames, despite it pouring down with rain at the time. I was talking to two old grimesthorpians on Saturday who knew the culprits.
  14. Still love mi pobs skippy, but things are that bad 'ere av 'ad to take bones outen mi shirt collar to mek some soup to dip mi pobs in!
  15. George, I think we have previously said the last friday in March at the Ball for our reunions which would make it Friday 29th March. You can count me and Ralph in and probably our Ken. If I were you I would tell Gail not to bother with sandwiches, although it is very kind of her, the same numbers as last time would not make it worth her while. We are quite happy to turn up and just enjoy a drink and a natter.
  16. If it is the mining report included with the deeds of your house, it probably refers to the "parkgate seam" and not "parkgate pit". This particular seam of coal ran through South Yorkshire and was good quality coal used for gas manufacture. Hence the original reason for the location of the Gas Works right next to the colliery.
  17. The road wasn't there in 1926 as per this aerial shot. You can see part of the colliery site far left above the bogey arches. http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw015485?search=grimesthorpe&ref=0
  18. Which Ernest ? There were two barbers called Ernest on Upwell Street! Ernest Oldham and Ernest Wiley. Ernest Oldhams was on the far side of holywell road, and Ernest Wileys was two doors away from Yates/Gobeys paper shop. You are right about singeing the back of your head with a lighted taper, used to frighten me to death.
  19. When did they move Bramall Lane to Hillsborough walt ? Wednesday moved from Bramall Lane in 1887 to Olive Grove and did not move to Hillsborough until 1899. I suppose for Grimesthorpe Wednesday supporters, the move in 1899 would have been a blow as Hillsborough was no as accessible by tram in those days.
  20. You and David (Sowter) would recognise this impressive photo of your house. Me and our Dave were friends with David Sowter in the late 60's. If I remember correctly his nickname was "snats". Used to often see him at Hillsborough , another follower of the true faith. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n297/Rawson21/WincoRoad_zps18c4f856.jpg[/img]"]
  21. Started delivering papers for Yates Newsagents on Upwell Street, Grimesthorpe, at the age of 14 in 1964. I took over the round from a lad called Paddy Riley. For delivering morning papers, evening Stars (City Late Edition) , and Sunday papers you got 12/6d a week. You had to get 100 stars in your paper bag, and it took some carrying up Holywell Road I can tell you. Mind you , you could get rid of them quickly with four houses to each yard . Used to get a load of rollickings every other Saturday, when Wednesday were at home. Parked my bike at my uncles nearby, left the match at 4.25pm (Ony 15 minutes left in those days) and got to the paper shop just after 5pm. Customers expected their Star soon after the Star van dropped them at the shop at 4 pm.
  22. I'll be there, and probably my brothers if I remember to tell 'em.
  23. I think it was agreed that it would be the last Friday in October which would make it the 26th October. I assume the venue will be the Ball Inn on Upwell Street.
  24. When i walked down Chambers Lane their was a uk flag painted on the back wall of the coronation 1953, its still visible but most of it is covered with trees and rubbish. any memories of it pigeon. Remember the Union Jack well when I used to walk up Chambers Lane to Grimesthorpe Junior School. Also remember some workmen digging the road up opposite doing their best to deliberately attract my attention. Walked straight into the gaslamp and squashed my nose flat against my face !
