  1. Can you remember Dave having a bad accident in the Isle of Man? he had his pelvis and other bits badly broken, I went to see him in the Royal Infirmary when he was brought back to Sheffield
  2. I remember Phil Ledger, he had a red SS180 Vespa and he used to hang about in the bowling alley on Queens road. sorry to hear he has died. I can remember going to his house and he kept the scooter I think it was an outhouse or in the kitchen. I knew him through the scooter scene at the bowling alley and a mutual friend who also lived on the Littledale estate called Dave Rodgers another Vespa rider, after all these years I've still got a Lambretta.

  5. I wonder if anyone can help me with a family puzzle? I have an elderly aunt who lives in Norfolk and she married my uncle in 1953 and lived in Winyard Road with my grand parents for the first 3 years of their marriage, She is now in her late eighties and we speak quite often on the phone and I visit her whenever possible since my uncle passed away, she emailed me earlier this week and asked me if I remembered anything about a family of Eskimos who lived with my grandparents after the war but before she lived with them ,apparently it was a big thing at the time, they came here after my great uncle went to Canada and joined the Mounties and it was through him that they came here. I can remember seeing a photograph of a family dressed like Eskimos when I was a child in my grandma's but where the photo is now I have no idea, I have contacted cousins to ask if they have any information but so far I have drawn a blank. My aunt says she thinks there was a story about them in the Telegraph or Star, does anyone know if I would be able to find out from the papers any information? I know it's a long shot but it is a fascinating story. Thanks
  6. some of these houses built around this time were built using black mortar which contains high levels of sulphur and over the years it reacts with the damp and creates a corrosive substance which rots the wall ties and causes the inner and outer walls to move, we had this problem and we had to have the entire outer leaf taken down and rebuilt, I believe this was the reason many older council houses were demolished (Manor) so be sure to have a structural survey carried out to ensure it is sound.
  7. I've used PVM for a few years and I can honestly say Paul is the most honest mechanic I have used always does a good job at a fair price and only does what's needed
  8. Wood recycling on Burton Street they have hundreds and very cheap
  9. My brother in law was a reporter for a national newspaper at the time the ripper was caught, he was at our house when it was announced he had been arrested (Sunday afternoon) he phoned the news desk and asked if they wanted him to cover the story as he was in Sheffield which they did, he spent months investigating everything and anything connected with Sutcliffe, the only picture you have seen of Sutcliffe my brother in law bought from Sutcliffe's father in law for £30,000, he bought 2 pictures, the one everyone has seen is part of a wedding photo where he and his wife were cutting the wedding cake, I thought at the time the paper must have been mad to pay that much for the photos but they sold the copyright to every news agency, newspaper and TV company and made a fortune, the other photo was given to my brother in laws brother ( a lorry driver) to show around to find people who knew him, so in depth was his investigation into Sutcliffe he discovered a local catholic priest had presided over Sutcliffe's wedding.

Just found this thread and I cant believe no one has mentioned Mr Vinson he made Wardle look like a saint he was my year tutor, I left in 1968 I can still remember his car registration number SHE 957 it was a maroon and grey Vauxhall Victor he used to drive around malin bridge looking for pupils who were smoking and going to the chip shop, none of which were allowed back then, that's probably why I got the cane so often.
