  1. Folksy.com might be worth a look at.
  2. Really sorry to learn that Gerry Summers has passed. He was 90 and part of the team when I started to support SUFC. RIP
  3. For those old of us to remember it was basically how a man was expected to treat a ladyā€¦usually to achieve a happy result! Iā€™ve come across a few that may ring a few bellsā€¦. (Courtesy of a web site!) Opening a door Offering your seat Helping with a coat Sharing an umbrella Dinner table etiquette Giving attention Remembering something significant Sending unexpected flowers Anyhow, a lady friend of ours went to the seaside with her weekend partner. A big bloke. They are walking along the prom and he fell off the kerb and pulled her with him. Unfortunately for her he fell on top of her and broke her leg. She then spends 10 hours in A&E. She gets transported home and basically spends the days with her leg up and relying on friends and neighbours to provide meals, walk the dog and so on. After a few days , he turns up. No get well card or bunch of flowers to be seen. Instead, what does he bring. His washing! Now, I wonā€™t be alone in saying us blokes have done some pretty dumb things in our lives, but this takes prime spot. Thereā€™s more as well. She asked him to put her car in the garage. He did that but managed to scrape the car in the process. Must admit I felt rather good after hearing the story.
  4. Thanks everyone for replying. Lets finish off by wishing you all a Merry Christmas
  5. We moved into our current house nine years ago and each year we receive a Christmas Card addressed to the previous owner. We bought the house as a probate sale and so we know the previous owners are deceased. Weā€™ve no family contact details to forward the card. This, quite honestly, sums up the pathetic ritual of sending Christmas cards each year from the long list of old friends, ex neighbours, old work colleagues who we have not seen, or heard of, for many a year. It would be nice to maintain contact regularly rather than just a one way message at this time of year. Agree? Nickā€¦.two left feet, canā€™t stand Strictly
  6. Must admit weā€™ve not been out for many pub meals since covid. The price rise being the main reason. However, we were out the other night at the village pub for a couple of pub classics, burger and a curry washed down with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc ā€¦.thatā€™ll be Ā£60 including tip. That aside, this pub has always been an eating pub not a drinking pub. It got me thinking (!) of the different rooms that were in a pub. Mostly long gone as far as my local knowledge extends. Soā€¦.the ones I can recall are, Bar, Snug, Lounge, Tap, Saloon. One or two being the same thing I know. Are there any more room names and are there any pubs out there still with the traditional names? If so, and Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a few, do they manage to serve food without the whole pub being knocked into one large restaurant. Nickā€¦70ā€¦size10ā€¦.own teeth
  7. I was part of the 1964 intake and remember John Ramsden ( taken from us far too early) as we had mock elections at King Edwards whenever there was a general election. Needless to say he represented the Conservatives. Not sure if he won as we had an Independent candidate who possibly stole the show.
  8. Colin Addisonā€¦..managed more clubs than anyone else and all around the world. One of them being Atletico Madrid. Another being Scarborough Town. I think it was Hereford United where he achieved a cult like status.
  9. No mention of VAR. Thatā€™s a surprisešŸ˜‚
  10. Actually that reminded me of Ben & Jerrys Cherry Garcia. Long time since it was available in the UK but itā€™s up there with Viennetta. šŸ˜€. Thatā€™ll be Hagen Dazsā€¦not condoms! šŸ˜‚
  11. Some say the wheel, the internal combustion engine, spectacles, sat nav, iPhone but letā€™s be honest it has to be a Viennetta. Just had a slab for pud. First time in agesā€¦orgasmic. Can anyone come up with anything better. I doubt itšŸ˜€
  12. This is truly brilliantā€¦thanks so much for the contributions. Now, and perhaps not the best time to reply after a Sunday lunchtime sherry, but you have to be of a certain age to remember activities of fifty years ago. And there lies the problem, we canā€™t. For starters, I canā€™t remember Clements and no one is helping by at least giving a first name. A bit of help there would be appreciated. My best mate, even though he is a Wednesday supporter, agreed with Tommy Craig and Wilf Smith, or Wilf Schmidt to others, but then suggested Carlton Palmer, Nigel Jemson, John Harkes and Mel Sterland (to Leeds) but didnā€™t really specify coming or going. Looking back, we did look on theses deals with a certain amount of pride in that we had joined the big boys but now we have absolutely no idea who was actually involved. Great workā€¦.more work needed on the United transfers though.
  13. Yes, I think it was Tommy Craig who was also labelled as the most expensive teenager. Nice one!
  14. Who were the first players to command those tags, both incoming and outgoing, for both United and Wednesday? The best suggestions I can offer for Ā£100,000 outgoing are Geoff Salmons for United and Wilf Smith for Wednesday. Could be well wrong though. Iā€™ve absolutely no idea of the Ā£1,000,000 players. I know weā€™ve both spent badly when we have money to burn but thatā€™s a subject for another day. It will be really interesting to learn who the honours go to.
  15. I think John Quinn had left Wednesday before Manfred Mann released that record. Crikey, Iā€™m having to look things up as it is so long ago.
  16. And thatā€™s exactly how I remember him. 5ā€™ 4ā€ but as tough as nails. Apparently Rowley got one over on Clough when he sold him for Ā£63,000. So it says on Wikipedia. Youā€™ve not seen nothing like the mighty Carlin
  17. Willie Carlin it is! Unbelievable that I still remember a one season player fifty years later.
  18. This record from the 60s has been played quite a lot recently on Gold. All these years later I automatically change the words to that one season midfielder we had at Bramall Lane. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a few others out there that remember himā€¦.he moved to join Brian Clough at Derby County. And his name isā€¦.
  19. He got man of the match against Leicester today. I think heā€™s kept a clean sheet for virtually every Arsenal game heā€™s been in.
  20. For the first time in a few years I bought a Sunday newspaper this morning. The Sunday Times no less. I needed a non tabloid paper for masking a room whilst decorating. However after getting over the Ā£3 charge I thought Iā€™d read it before using it for masking. Unitedā€¦..22 words in the Championship Round-Up. It mentions the Stoke scorer but no mention of Unitedā€™s scorers! Wednesdayā€¦..diddly squat in the League One Round Up
  21. 100 years later they were still dazzled. In particular John Hope. He went up for a straightforward high ball and it went straight through his hands. It was an awful evening, one I try and forget. I can ā€˜t remember the score or the opposition. No doubt some kind soul will resurrect the miseryā€¦.
  22. Nottingham only have Nottingham Forest in the top leagues at the moment. Would love to see Notts County regain league status ASAP.
  23. The point about geographical location attracting footballers reminded me that when Sunderland were a premiership club that they seriously considered having a training ground in London.
  24. Do we really want to be saved by an investment of over Ā£300 million to enable us to compete at the very top, as per Newcastle? Having said that, Leicester City through superb management, both on and off the field, have proven that it can be done . They still spend a few quid though. Iā€™d be more than happy if both Sheffield clubs could at least be together in the Championship and we can have a couple of derbies each season. That would at least get us back to the banter, the hurt of losing, or the sheer joy of beating the enemy. At least we are one of, I think, six cities that have two football league clubs. Good post Crookesey
