  1. I read in tonight's Star that radio sheffield played an hours tribute to tony. Sadly i missed it. Dont suppose anyone has it in a sound file type format (i am techno phobic) so that i can listen to it via my p.c. Any help would be truly appreciated.
  2. I had some pictures and lent them to a neighbour. Will have to get them back. Someone on the estate told me that a star newspaper team had taken lots of pics when the place was first closed. I went into the news shop to enquire left my name and number and guess what...... nothing. I will revisit the shop so watch this space.
  3. Dizzy an co. There has been at least one couple living in those apartments for the last three weeks or so. They are brave people. Would not mind when the place is thrivin but not when one end of the building is still practically a shell and all alone. Ps. say hello to "our jeff" for me cheers
  4. Can anyone remember the fountain on Sheaf Square roundabout. I remember it as a kid along with the much more recent demise of the one on the top of Fargate. Anyone any idea when the Sheaf Square one was filled in.
  5. The original plan was for some sort fifty fifty deal with the council granting permission for the developers to build the apartments first to raise capital and then build offices when the appartments were completed. Planners then get greedy and decide that appartments are more profitable and try to renage on the original deal....remember Sheffield airport and the open cast mining deal. Council agreed to open cast project on the previso that on completion the company builds a new airport at Tinsley. When the opencasting was completed the company went bust... no airport.
  6. Thanks for that info Dizzy. You have made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. It would be great to see the pictures that were taken. Ps my brother in law Jeff Webster also collects the refuse on the estate.
  7. Its all part of a bigger picture. Give it time. You can't please all the people all ov the time.
  8. I remember him getting in deep trouble for saying that radio hallam were going to have Elvis stuffed and placed in a glass case in the reception area of the radio station...talk about light blue touch paper and stand well back..........booooooom!!!
  9. I have found a referance to the last train on the net myself and there is one picture of some of the old buildings that are now gone. I can't really make my mind up as to where the picture was actually taken. I found a few more pics on the net and one of my neighbours lent me a copy of a book published in 1972 to celebrate the hospitals centenary. There were two or three really good pics in there and i managed to get some copies done. PS Thanks for the invite, i may take you up on that offer the next time i get off the tram.
  10. I have lived on the estate that is springing up in the old hospital grounds for around 18 months. The place really intrigues me with the main mens ward now well on the way to refurbishment.I have just heard that the clock tower has been saved from demolition and will undergo some sort of restoration in the near future. I have spoken to people who have worked in the hospital in the past and everyone talks about what a close knit community it was. There was a real sense of a family atmosphere about the place. I would love to view any old photos of the place or listen to stories from people who have worked there in the past. The only memory i have is going there in the early eighties to try and capture one of the wild kittens that lived in the grounds, to take home as a family pet. Good job i never managed to catch one really....mmmmm.
  11. I saw some old pictures of the weir on http://www.picturesheffield.com. Took in victorian times and it looked like a family holiday. I did not notice a bridge but it would be a good idea to put one back in. I often wondered why they called the Police social club on Claywheels Lane the Niagra Club and then discovered the weir last year whilst out walking the dogs. The place could do with a tidy up but its one of Sheffields hidden gems.
  12. Apart from the wednesday night run there are a few people that run on a tuesday and friday from Pinegrove 7.40 pm. These are not Striders runs and are shorter runs than the wednesday one. The runs are usually about 40 mins duration. if you can build up a little stamina by running alone for a couple of weeks, usually increasing your distance a little at a time. Dont worry about speed that will come in time. When you start to improve (which you will do on each run) and can jog for half an hour or so at a gentle rate (walking where necessary) come down to the Pinegrove and join in . You will improve steadily and the runners never leave anyone behind. The front runners usually run ahead for a short distance and then run back to the last runners. That way everyone benefits. Give it a go.
  13. Steel City striders are a very friendly running club. They have around two hundred members and run from different venues around the city on different nights. Wednesday night 7pm prompt runs from Pinegrove Country club on Myres Grove Lane Stannington. Beautiful summer runs around Loxley, Stannington, Dungworth, Damflask etc. Winter runs nearly always on the roads around Rivelin, Crookes, Sandygate, Lodgemoor etc. Showers and a couple of well deserved pints afterwards. All ablilities catered for. Give it a try.
  14. Can anyone remember the "it's a knockout" show coming to Norfolk Park in about 1970. I went down there to watch. I was only five years old at the time and remember there was a long delay. I waited for an age for things to commence but it got so late, i had to go home and missed all the fun.
  15. I was told recently that the workers involved in rebuilding the old kingswood ward on the hospital site had downed tools and evacuated the building after one of the builders saw a white lady appear through a brick wall. Cant have been that spooky cause they soon returned to work.
  16. Reading other messages reminded me of a couple of incidents that happened round about 1979. Once in Commonside, Walkley with a couple of other teenage friends when a skinny little bloke on a mobelet type pedal moped pulled along side us, stopped and said "i like yer feet" and then shot off on his way. A couple of weeks later near the Hollybush pub in Rivelin exactly the same thing happened again......very strange...please someone tell me that i didn't dream it..
  17. Hi there, does anyone remember the massive stuffed polar bear that used to hang out in the museum. The one that was stood on all fours and not the one that later appeared (much smaller) which i think was stood in an upright posture. I remember been shown the bear as a young boy and thinking how threadbare it looked. Is it still in the museum archives or has it disappeared along with those fancy park gates??
  18. Can anyone remember thrashing around the boating lake on the big motor boat. I wonder what became of it ? i think it was called Queen Elizebeth. What about the original wooden rowing boats all painted in bright primary colours....ahhh happy days.
