  1. I am aware that other threads relate to the topic, but the place has been shut for a couple of months now and i think that the rest of the pubs in Hillsboro' are suffering as a result (very quite) . Maybe its because its January and everyone's skint, i don't know. It seems strange that there are no "to let" or "for sales" up on the building. Does anyone know what is planned.....if anything ? Cheers
  2. I know that his parents lived on the end of Dykes lane near the Dial house club. He is buried in Wisewood Cemetry and people visit his grave from all over the world and leave messages.
  3. We used to meet up on a Saturday dinner time on the galleries near the Castle Market, then go for a mod march through town. Every week more people turned up then one day the police rounded us all up and took us to west bar. We were detained at the top of the building in some sort of hall with a stage at the front. There must have been a couple of hundred of us. I was forteen at the time {1979) and my old man had to come out of the pub and come to town on the bus to get me out. He wernt pleased especially when he saw the fags that the police had taken off me earlier in the day. The was the longest bus ride home ever
  4. One of our youthful pass times in the winter months when the nights were dark was to go back nacking (sp) This was done by finding a long row of houses and starting at one end make your way through the rear gardens commando style. The objective was to complete the course without getting caught. Garden ponds and washing lines were always troublesome. One time we were creeping across a lawn when the room light came on an elderly gentleman appeared at the door and let two Jack russels out into the garden. As the dogs were relieving themselves we dare not even breath and had all on not to give the game away when the old man broke wind. He called the dogs back in and we carried on with the task. happy days
  5. Can antone please shed light on what happened to the plans to tie up parts of the Sheffield University with the American Aircraft Company. The plan was to bring lots of jobs to the area and work in partnership. Have the plans died a death or are they still in progress ?
  6. Can anyone remember the mobile "Parky's" from the mid seventies ? They rode around on Triumph motorbikes. As kids we would try to sneak into the parks (Crookes Valley & Western Park) after closing time and were frequently chased by the patrollers. The parks are all left open these days and its a very rare sight if you can spot a park keeper.
  7. It would be really handy if someone with a little time on their hands could put together a list of the new opening hours of drinking establishments in and around the Sheffield area. The pubs near home in Hillsboro' are opening til midnight at the weekend. Hardly 24 hour drinking but i suppose it would be a little dangerous to offer much longer hours in the heart of S6.
  8. I paid a visit to a friends house recently and he showed me a jar of old coins. Whilst sorting through them we found a coin or tolken that had the words Howard Hotel Walkley on it. I know that there is a Howard Hotel in the town center, there is a Howard Rd in Walkley but i cant find any reference to a hotel. Can anyone help please

  11. I lived on Samual Drive from 67 to 72 and went to Bluestones. I loved living there with all the open space. i remember the little blue hut that served as the local shop and the off sales at the horse and lion. Tried to find pictures of the estate but no luck
  12. After waiting to purchase tickets someone has left a black and white Border Collie cross dog in the ticket office. Staff are looking after the dog but are keen to return it to its rightful owner. anyone any ideas ? Good job they didn't take the kids with them to the ticket office.
  13. Coaching stock was kept at Nunnery Sidings near the bottom of Sheffield Parkway and all the loco's were transferred to Tinsley which also had a maintainance depot.
  14. Tinsley Marshelling Yard opened in 1965, i think that this spelt the end for local depots such as Millhouses, Canklow,Darnall Neepsend and Brightside.
  15. The church was built specifically for the Hospital. Prior to the Hospital being built the land was a park called Wadsley Park, hence Wadsley Park Village the name of the new estate.
  16. Ichmeler is a top resort. Ten minute bus ride (hold on tight) from the bustling Marmaris but a little quiter and more scenic. Very clean resort and the locals will do all they can to make your holiday a special time. Booked for two weeks last August with http://www.Perfectholidaychoice.com and paid under £1200 for a family of four. Turkey is still very cheap for drinks and eating out so take advantage before they join the EEC and it all goes through the roof.
  17. Can anyone remember the Rock Face behind the Rivelin Hotel that looked like the profile of a mans head ?. Its covered by trees now so you cant see it. It was always pointed out to us as kids as we travelled along Rivelin Valley Road.
  18. i didn't know your Dad but Pitz Soccer is still there, they call it Power league or something similar now though.
  19. As a kid, whenever in the vacinity of Waingate or the Wicker i can always remember the awful smells that came from Lady's Bridge brewery. Dont know if it was the hops or whatever but it was real strong. I would accept the smells back though, for the sake of the brewery, what a scandle all those breweries that disappeared over what seemed like a short space of time.
  20. The Ball is now closed for a month for refurbishment, possibly a good time to sort out the clientelle on its re-opening.
  21. Does anyone know if the old Polar Bear will be part of the new museum exhibits ? It would be nice to see the old boy/girl and say hello.
  22. I was at Blue Stones from 1969 to 1972, and lived near by on the estate at that time. What a great place for kids in that era, plenty of grass and park land to play. They have just knocked down the Masonettes where we live on Samual Drive. We left there, with all the comforts of modern living like central heating and a bathroom, into a two up two down terrace in Commonside, Walkley, complete with outside loo. I dont think i've got any pictures though, we were very poor in them days and didn't own a camera.
  23. I saw one earlier this week filling up with fuel in Law bros service station, Hillsboro'. It wasn't sign written but was painted in the same red and cream livery (faded and tatty).
  24. Grace Please enlighten us. There are a couple of lodges left the first is opening as a Nursery and the other one on Middlewood Road as sold for residential use. Are you sure that the one you refer to has been demolished ?. Please give any information you have as lots of people have a great interest in the area. Thank you in advance Blue
