  2. It's shown as the Kings Arms on the photo, so it maybe had a name change at some point later.

  7. Chocki can you remember Gerald "Cocky" Wright he lived in the old cottages that were there before the flats were built on Commonside. I once asked Mr Belfit if he remembered him and he could. Geralds my dads younger brother (my uncle) he"ll be about 57 years old now.
  8. I do remember Kitty and the hair dressers my great granny lived on Commonside flats and she used to go there for her blue rinse My mom worked at Becketts when I was a real nipper but I cant remember. Sorry to hear about your sister, but i dont think I can remeber her.
  9. No I'm 44 but now remember you vaguely tall and slim with reddish hair? I just remember the big family. My grandparents lived on Hands Road in the houses that backed on to Rosa Road. Which one of your brothers and sisters would I be nearest in age to? I once fell off a wall and broke my arm at the back of some houses on Harcourt Road, Pamela Boulby was there then you wernt there too was you?. Last day of the six weeks holidays !! It was a right drop i keep saying id go back and have a look, probably no where near as high as I remember.
  10. Was Claytons the last shop on the right going up Barber Road? I knew that as Tommy's . He died last year and was in his eighties. He could rattle, i'd be in there on a saturday aged about 8 waiting for about half an hour to get served theres a lot to be said for supermarkets
  11. Chocki I remember a family called Williams that lived on there one of the girls was called Linda (i think) What about A1 taxis on the corner and the owners barmy son who used to fly about on a battered old yammy FS1E (fizzy) he went all over the world on it. I bought it off him and it fell to bits.
  12. No my names Wayne. We lived at 21 the bottom house on the right as you went down the hill. Or first on the left on the way up right next to the old laundry. When we lived there between 71 and 78 the place was making cheap metal jewellry. We then moved onto Leamington Street first house on the left again . Happy days
  13. Margaret used to baby sit for me and my brother. She was great, she used to bring bigs bags of sweets and if we behaved she would sometimes give us some... only sometimes.
  14. Just found this old thread and it still facinates. The thing is I posted on here in 2006 and have since forgotten what I posted thats got to be a bad sign. Anymore Commonside memories would be great. Thanks
  15. Mr V. What a man. I've just binned a pair of trainers that I bought off of him 2 years ago. They were full of holes but I was reluctant to throw them away. I'm waiting for him to part wear his next pair so that I can buy them and he can buy new in the states. I sometimes see him for a beer i hillsboro after running, thats when he's not abroad on holiday !!
  16. Hi SSG Does he still run? I probably know him.
  17. On a side issue my son is in his first year at college and has been unable to find a firm who will set him on. He has now been offered the chance to work as an apprentice in a different vocation and would ideally love to swap trades. I dont want him to rock the boat with college a risk losing his place. Has anyone any idea if simpathy would be shown and would he be allowed to swap. Or even wait til September and start again. Any advice welcomed.
  18. I travelled daily to Manchester for 6 years in the late 90s. I lived in Loxley at the time and used to drive over the Snake Pass (half an hour on a good day) park up at Glossop (free) then catch the local train (another half hour) from Glossop to Manchester Piccadilly. The season Ticket from Glossop to Piccadilly would be much cheaper. At peak times I think that the trains run every 20 minutes. Ironically the only time I ever had to use M1 M62 was the week that I was leaving my job to return to work in Sheffield. The only downsides are milage on the car 50 miles a day return trip and the dodgy weather on the Snake. I'd buy an old reliable diesel car and join the AA !! Positives are shorter journey time plus the fantastic scenary on the Snake.
  19. That is sad news Anglingblade. I used to sit with him in his Signal Box for hours. He was a real personality. Park Drive fags and extra strong mints, oh and stewed tea . I called at his house a few years ago and it was just like old times. Rest in Peace Cyril.
  20. Hello there Does anyone know the whereabouts of Cyril. He used to live in the last Yard on Skinnerthorpe Road behind the Asian Video Shop. I worked on the railways with him years ago and noticed that his house is now boarded up (along with the others). You might remember him riding along Brightside Lane to work on his customised push bike. He worked in Tinsley West Signal Box (long gone) which was underneath the Tinsley Viaduct. What a great bloke. Would probably be in his early seventies now. Any info would be appreciated.
  21. Car park at the side of radio sheffield on Shoreham Street is £5 all day. 5minutes walk to station. Also on Farm Road near the old railway club park on the street for free (unless restrictions have been placed).
  22. I can recommend this place. Students under instruction. Friendly staff, modern and cheap.
