  1. Does anyone know if there was a BLUE COAT school/Home in the Sheffield area, around 1900. Google mentions several in other towns, but not Sheffeld. Thanks.
  2. My wife Margaret Ruth Savage attended there. Born in Jan 1930, so possibly there early forties.
  3. Thanks EVERYONE for your help. Little did I know that wnen I worked on Clarence Lane (side of the the roundabout), in 1980 for Davy Computing that I was overlooking the ground that my father was born on!. I cannot find adequate words to express my feelings about this. So would like to express my appreciation to you all that collectively did all the work and research. I will always be deeply indebted to you. Regards .
  4. Many thanks for your tip. Cheers. JG.
  5. Yesterday, I typed in a longish post and almost got to the last line and the whole message disappeared and I even hadnt pressed submit. This has happened several times before. Am I accidentally catching a key or something. Thanks.
  6. Hi Duffems. Just a short explanation. Hillsbro's map on S'F today, enabled me to possibly sort out my father's history. So this afternoon, I composed a very long message and started typing it in Post Reply, to send to you. I got almost to the end when it vanished off the screen!. This has happened a few times in recent months. Suffice it to say that I think that I've got a positive trace. If interested I'll try again soon. Regards
  7. Thanks Retep. Good of you to provide this info. It's like trying to sort a jig-saw puzzle out but I suppose further back harder it gets. Cheers.
  8. Hi Duffems. Fantastic stuff. Thanks so much for this. It's incredible that you can give me such a picture of things so long ago. I'd like to chat further but running late but promise to get back to you a.s.a.p. Bye. J.
  9. HILLSBRO Hiya P. Can't believe the detail you've supplied, great stuff. Regards. J.
  10. Thanks Plain Talker for your explanation of the courts. This enables me to understand the conditions of my father's times and will have to bear in mind when doing further research. I only got the certificate yesterday morning so am staggered by all the help and info. received since then. Bye for now. JG.
  11. Thanks very much for all your replies, these are a great help to me. On my father's birth certificate, it says 'Court 1, Lawson Street'. No house number. Can anyone explain exactly what a Court is? Is this the same as in a terrace block, where you have a passage way, leading to say, 2 houses or more either side in a yard with shared toilet facilities? Thanks again.
  12. Hi P.T. I appreciate your time in map tracing. I'll make further attempts but not very confident. It's a strange situation, as his on-line school records as a child show him living at 118 Alexandra Rd, close by. I feel I can certainly discount Lawson ROAD. I'll keep you updated. Regards and good health. JG
  13. My father's birth certificate states that he was born on Lawson Street (Not Lawson Road) in 1894. I always thought he was born on Alexandra road,Heeley. Would these 2 roads have been close by?. Appreciate any info. Many thanks. JG.
  14. Hi, Many thanks to the latter posters for the advice on book-tracing. Also like to apologise to any former posters that i failed to respond to, due to Hospitalisation. Hope to keep in touch now. Regards. J.
  15. Hi Mantaspook. Thanks again for your links to the books. I found the synopses of the Cuban crisis and Bleriot very interesting. I appreciate your time and effort. Digressing now, your mention of the A.T.C. reminds me of a recent neighbour who's sole topic was of this, in some form of leadership. If you're interested please p.m. me. Regards. J.
  16. Thanks every-one for discussing our situation with me. Your'e right of course and common sense has prevailed. Looking forward to further chats thanks to S.F.
  17. Cant believe this response!.I ought to have asked before. Thanks so much.
  18. These few words keep going thro' my mind, does any-one recognise them? 'The old school-house door, that they tumbled thro' at 4'. Thanks very much.
  19. Hi Gracie.A few brief details of the Savages. I believe they originated from Whiston. Father was Fred, Wife Ruth, 5 kids, Margaret Ruth (my wife), Doug ,Bryan, Dorothy,Anne. Margaret has mentioned Bright St., Carbrook school, Abbeydale Grammar. But I think they would be best known the other side of Tinsley Bridge (Plumpers Road), I know some relations lived there. Fred (father-in-law) a well known figure (slater/tiler). It's a long shot but you never know. Sorry Linnet, didnt notice your post as I typed above. I personally didnt go to Maltby St. school (not a Savage) but cant answer for the Savages. Cheers
  20. Hi Plain Talker. I appreciate your kind post. The most positive thing is that 'M' is safe and getting the care she needs as she degenerates. The world's suddenly become a better place 'cos of all the caring people around. Please keep in touch. Regards.
  21. Thanks Dozy for your reply .I was unaware of the this chat line and obviously it will be of great interest to me. Possibly my experiences can benefit others, particularly as ALZ. is growing at a terrifying rate, ( 700.000 reg. now to increase to 2 million in the next decade).
  22. Brilliant posts, Olive Tree, Artisan. Youve put into words what Ive been trying to say for years.
  23. Yes, when I was a kid into House. In later years this became lounge to most people but i think on some occasions its rather pretentious.
  24. Tend to agree. Never heard of snicket. Brick archway,= Entry or Passageway. Regarding Jennel, I lived at the side of one for 40 years. It connected my road with the next road at the back. Never heard it called anything else. Except occasionally if I was outside the house, some-one would ask 'where's this ginnel lead to.' I used to think where've they got that word from.
  25. Hi Carbrooklad. Thanks for the details Lockhouse Lane Broughton Lane. Just the job.The book details are: 'Growing up in Attercliffe' by Alfred Green. ISBN 863210 907490 00 X.
