  1. Funny you posted this, I was just thinking the same last night walking along Penistone road. Difficult to pick out the dog crap on the path but  to look at the lights was almost painful due to their intensity and colour. Light is very complicated perhaps its lack of reflected light, the colour spectrum of the LED's being absorbed more by surroundings.

Some OBA in dog food and more UV in the LED's might help my case.

It is illegal to drive a vehicle on the public road with  LED lights if the vehicle originally was equipped with tungsten its even now (post Brexit) been added to the MOT so a vehicle fitted with them should fail.

Cars OE led would have to have type approved or OM light units as replacement which would comply with regulations and been tested by the government body to be allowed to be sold in the UK.

    But still they come.

  2. Firstly thankfully no deaths and injuries relatively light, could have been much worst, the worst being the driver, hope he recovers with out too much long term effects,at 74 he must have been close to retiring unlucky fella.

The initial reports were rubbish, even BBC reporting hearsay, no expert but what i read didn't sit with me when looking at the pictures.

What's being said now still a little hard to understand that the track was so much more slippery that the train overshot the red light by 220 metres,  how much of an increase in distance was that, after all steel on steel isn't that good to start with.

OK we have to wait for a thorough investigation but the thing for me though is we have been hearing about leaves being an issuer for years, surely it's a bad idea to have so many trees lining the track around junctions? It seems to be very common.

  3. Certainly  don't just ignore it unless just about to permanently leave the country.

The usual parasitic action is to offer discount if paid without argument immediately, if so then its down to how you feel. They have fined a lot of people at this site so you would think they must have got their case pretty tight by now, but if not  then it won't cost you anything to take it to popla, it will make them work a bit harder for their money.

  4. For the last two years i have been mulling over going over to Lincolnshire to help with the harvest, I having worked for the nhs and subsequently support services to it would consider my time harvesting food the most worthwhile  employment I would have had. Perhaps  organise a car full, get a cheap caravan to doss in. Not sure how dire the situation really is as i don't believe any thing I read any more, I would like some reassurance from an organisation we could believe..

Too many people in this country  have to low regard for food production and distribution, without doctors a few more of  of us would die, with out food many would a die.

So many want to give money (especially tax payers) for foreign countries that  have people starving but would see our own produce rot because labouring to process food is either beneath them, too much effort for the money, "boring", or "dirty". bear in mind its one planet, there is so much food what we want but don't grow we take from others.

Worst still, the "why should i physically exert myself doing this", brigade, "i can pay to go to the gym" and be trendy for exercise.  When i was young we used to help local farmer lead the hay, started when at school age which the money seemed great (we didn't get the money from parents to behave, just good hiding if didn't) in the barns filled with dust, hot summer (70's) it was quite horrible but still once working carried on, as we used to say some daft gits pay for this exercise., and gyms were a lot rarer then and usually sweaty men in vests.

  5. What transmitter are you picking up from?

If your Ariel is pointing to Crosspool then the only "Great tv" channels (was Sony before) are channel 33 "Great movies" and 41 "great movies action", the other great movie channels like "great  tv" on channel 49, "great movies classic" ch 51  are transmitted from Grenoside (Skew Hill) on mux  channel 31 along with "Sheffield live" channel. It's so people picking up from Emlymoor in the intake area get a local Sheffield channel as its inline. People picking up from Tapton (Crosspool) must just be unworthy, it was removed in 2020 for 5g.

One of our tv's (in Wadsleybridge) can for some un explicable reason pick up the local channel -  transmitter about 90 degrees different direction?  if the weather conditions are right, better half watches them quite a bit and has commanded me to fix it.    😟

Its difficult getting up to date info as its constantly changing and many web sites don't keep up,.

  6. The pretentious ones from Neepsend - sorry - Kelham, who think the canal water tasting ale is trendy and fashionable call it "Victoria Quays"  Watter, along with calling birds custard "crème anglaise"

I was a fan of old Stones, best pint i had was in Leeds ironically, not that it helps with your question which i can't sorry, have you tried Bradfield brewery ales, i like farmers ale.

I will look out for the new stuff  from true north though look forward to trying it myself.

  7. Sounds like bad reluctor signal possibly bad connection or broken sensor wire making intermittent connection most likely a rusty ring (its what happens with age 😧 ) cheap enough item but quite a lot of work to replace.

Its for three days....and it's been common knowledge for months that it would be going ahead...surely you can plan ahead and make alternate travel arrangements can't you..?

Out of interest ..what do you do when there's a match at Hillsborough..?

An area suffers with football matches so should suffer some more with tramlines, perhaps share some of the suffering out to other areas?

  9. I didn't think prefabs were built before the war

Odd to under pin a prefab usually concrete raft.

I think somebody hasn't put the effort in about getting details correct, perhaps a deceased previous owner?

I don't know much about the real prefab bungalows built just after the war but often called prefabs the concrete slab construction of houses such as reema built in 50's/60's as not built "conventionally"  made mortgages difficult as with steel or wood built houses.

The  only real issue was the spalling of the concrete which could avoid with treatment, unfortunately as most owned by council a bit of appropriate maintenance will never happen. They have  new brick/ block walls built on the outside on their own new foundation with new joists supported on this wall so the original concrete walls are obsolete, i don't know how they are standing the test of time as don't have anything to do with them anymore but with the 2 sets of walls they should be the strongest houses in Sheffield. After this work they are classed as built traditionally and a mortgage should not be a problem. Loads of older houses have asbestos, i would swap having to have asbestos removed to having to have a new roof on my crappy 120 year old house any day.

  10. As probedb says it depends on the format you are starting off with but for "conventional" dvd format I always save as mpg format , the same as used in the dvd files (vob) most early players ( i have a cheap and rather old DVD player that has usb slot which can only play this format) the files won't be as small but less loss and more likely to work if you take it some where else to play it ie. a friend house.

If it is conventional DVD  You can just save as a DVD in a folder ( explore DVD and save all the files to a named folder - that to me is a bit messy you get a few files you don't need).

There is a lot of software that can do it as no encoding changes required, i still use or at least used up to a few years ago, (i have saved all my stuff i wanted to save),  dvd shrink and clone dvd that came with a DVD burner about 20 years ago, does or at least did the job for me and very easy to use as no complicated bells and whistles menus to negotiate.

The last videos i have saved were from my cctv which had to have the format changed which i did with VLC player, i think a bit slow but its what i was using to view and the files weren't very big.

What type of file you save them as is personal choice but the amount of bytes per £ you get on hard drives now doesn't really necessitate more highly compressed and less versatile video.

If you have a desktop/tower PC pick up a second hand hard drive for peanuts(so long as you keep the originals if it dies prematurely not the end of the world) and chuck it in - it will not be worked very hard like the os drive so should last for years, some of mine are more than 15years old and still working fine. If you only have laptop then an external hard drive is still a good idea for storage to me, our tv can now play a video from the pc or networked drive over the ethernet or wifi. In the kitchen i have the pc connected to the old "dumb" tv via hdmi cable so we can watch an old holiday vid, you tube etc or catch up straight on that which is how we watch most of our saved video.

I am no "expert" in the world of digital video but that's how i have saved and use mine.

  11. I was just waiting for my other half as we were going shopping so had a quick look on here to pass 5 mins and couldn't resist a quick look. I thought some of the more serious ancestry people would have posted

hang on a popup.... new post .. ah there you are.

    You are not the only person to have searched, here is a nice thread about him;

Nice that he went on to a good age his stint at wadsley may have been beneficial, it often wasn't in those days.

  12. Interesting, your aerial is pointing towards emley so not picking up sheffield live etc. from crospool (mux ch35) so presumably picking up grenoside on mux ch31.

That is about 45degrees from the direction your aerial is pointing and about the same angle from the grenoside transmitter makes to Manor/intake which it points so i would think some thing of a peripheral reception in both ways.

It doesn't help me though, i really need to know if anybody is receiving mux ch35 from tapton, except that it supports the info on Justin's web site.

  13. Can any body clear up the situation regarding the local mux (sheffield live - i know  🤔  but there are other channels some sony channels the boss likes),we get it (only any good when not raining or high pressure) on channel 31.

I am leppings lane area and tuned into crosspool transmitter. According to https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Tapton_Hill   it is transmitted on channel 55 (at low power) and com 7 mux is transmitted on ch31 .

According to Justins site https://www.aerialsandtv.com/knowledge/transmitters/sheffield-crosspool-transmitter its now on ch35 at 400w, ch 31 is turned off along with ch 37 and Grenoside transmits on ch31.

Is Grenoside still transmitting on 31? if so how does my kitchen tv pick it up when the aerial  its at 90 degrees to the direction its pointing, especially as its being transmitted in a 30 degree arc to manor direction?  no other tv's on the same splitter get it.

There is very little info about tv being transmitted from grenoside, it usually just gets listed as a radio transmitter.

Is Tapton/ crosspool still transmitting on ch35, if so why can i not recieve it? I am able to get ch 21 - ch 45 clearly although 45 has less power so my system seems happier at the lower end of the spectrum so perhaps the lower power tips it.  Any body else in the area geting the local channel and if so on what Mux?

I think things have been changing that much that organisations / websites have given up trying to keep up, there is a lot of conflicting information around, i am having most cofidence  in Justin at the moment.

  14. I think you are talking about a much bigger opening than say 6' achievable  with two hinged opening french window type doors other wise thats what you would have been going for. 3 or more panels  that concertina to one side either a runner on top or at bottom (which you will have to keep cleaning out - not lived with one myself but experience with sliding patio says avoid bottom runner like covid19).

If its a proper old Stone built building rather than a more modern stone faced building then i cringe at the thought. There will be plenty that will do it if works short enough, claim to have adequate expertise, can show you similar examples of their work which seems ok and yours will probably be ok for many years but you really need a proper expert in heritage buildings to advise and inspect. Definitely not the type of surveyor normally used when buying a house or no matter what letters they have after their name, or expect council building officer to control the work and materials used with the right sympathy for your building type.

You will be lucky to find a builder in Sheffield that is experienced with the lime mortar for start, and no builders foam, expect " whaaaaat, our kid allus yuese it, nowt fallen down yet".

Sorry, getting a bit cynical in my old age.

Old buildings are built in different ways, some are like dry stone walls where the two faces are built up and small loose material is put in the middle for support, nightmare stuff.
