  1. Facebook Event Jamie Taylor - guitar Pete Lyons - tenor sax Graham Jones - double bass Johnny Hunter - drums Tuesday 18th March – music starts at 9pm. The White Lion 615 London Road, Heeley S2 4HT 0114 255 1500 FREE entry & great BEER. Jamie Taylor is a jazz guitarist based in the North of England. He is also a principal lecturer at Leeds College of Music (the UK’s largest music college), teaching jazz guitar and musicianship on the BA Hons degree programme, for which he was Course Leader between 2007-2009. Today, Jamie gives performances, masterclasses and workshops around the UK, and also offers private guitar lessons. Having taught jazz exclusively at degree level for over ten years, Jamie is now one the country’s most experienced tutors in the idiom, and many of his former students have now gone on to successful careers of their own; some of these include members of Roller Trio, Bryan Ferry Orchestra, Led Bib, Submotion Orchestra, Everything Everything, IDST, and Sony/EMI artist Bruno Major. Thanks to the possibilities of the internet, Jamie now has students all over the world. He is a featured “master” on the internationally respected website Mike’s Masterclasses, where other masters include Lorne Lofsky, Paul Bollenbeck, Sheryl Bailey, John Stowell, and Steve Herberman amongst others. Closer to home, Jamie is also Electric Guitar Advisor and Examiner for the organization Yorkshire Young Musicians. Jamie was himself a student at Leeds College of Music, graduating in 2000 with first class honours and receiving the Eric Kershaw Prize for Plectrum Guitar. After a further year of study, he completed his M.Mus degree, and was awarded the College Prize for Postgraduate Studies. Jamie maintains a busy performing schedule, and has worked with leading UK musicians across a range of styles, such as Adrian Ingram, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Steve Brown, Neil Yates, Dale Gibson, Reuben Fowler, Tom Harrison, Carlos Lopez-Real, Gary Potter, Richard Hawley, and The Pigeon Detectives. Much of Jamie’s most rewarding work has taken place in the company of his regular collaborators in the North, such as Jamil Sheriff, Garry Jackson, Dave Walsh, Matt Anderson, Ben Lowman, Bruce Reid, Caroline Boaden, Joel Purnell, Sarah Brickel (with whom Jamie recorded for Candid Records) and Rosie Brown. Jamie’s latest self-directed project is his “Outside Line” quartet, featuring Matt Anderson, Garry Jackson, and Dave Walsh, which you can hear a sample of at https://soundcloud.com/jamie-taylor-32/introducing-outside-line. http://www.jamie-taylor.com/ Support live music! 4. A local jazz night giving the stage over to a whole host of local musicians. Expect beautiful ballads right through to burning Be-Bop; meaningful Mainstream to mad Modal; furious Funk to the frightfully Free; lively Latin to luscious Lounge; and classic Cool through to the curiously Contemporary! At the beginning of this year, Brilliant Corners presented an odd pairing of flute and tenor sax in a piano-less quartet. It was a brilliant success with audience members and musicians commenting on how much it was enjoyed so we are very happy to be bringing Henrik Linnemann back to the club to join the house trio of Pete Lyons, Graham Jones and Johnny Hunter. They will play some of the best known tunes in the Jazz repertoire and maybe a couple of more festive numbers. Join us for mince pies, mulled wine and carols round the Christmas tree at our last Brilliant Corners of 2013. Henrik Linnemann – flute Pete Lyons – tenor sax Graham Jones – double bass Johnny Hunter – drums Tuesday 17th December – music starts 9pm. 6. This month we have the modern Jazz quartet (not the 'Modern Jazz Quartet'...), Miyako. With their twin horn front-line and rhythm section of double bass and drums, the absence of a harmony instrument offers some interesting challenges and freedoms. From the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker group in the '50s, through Ornette Coleman's '60s bands to Dave Holland and others in the '90s, the pianoless quartet has come a long way. Miyako have a contemporary take on this tradition with fresh, contemporary and original compositions, drawing on many aspects of the modern Jazz heritage. Pete Lyons (tenor sax) Alex Baker (alto sax) Richard Keates (double bass) Johnny Hunter (drums) Tuesday 15th Oct – 8.30pm. 8. We are almost two years old! We will be having a big old party on August 20th where we will showcase some of the incredible talent that we get to hear every month at Brilliant Corners. I hope you will all be able to come along and help us celebrate! This month, however, we are very pleased to be welcoming back the Brilliant Corners Quartet featuring Jude Sacker on piano. Pete Lyons and Jude have played together as a duo for many years and have developed a very interesting and varied set of standards and not-so-standards. They have decided to treat you all to an evening of music from the great composers Kenny Wheeler, Lee Kontiz and Lennie Tristano. You can expect to hear tunes that you are familiar with alongside some fantastic, less well-known tunes that you may never have heard before. Pete Lyons – tenor sax Jude Sacker – keys Graham South – double bass Johnny Hunter – drums Tuesday 16th July – 8.30pm. 9. Get involved with this name-in-the-hat Free Improv jam session! Bring along an instrument or just come to listen. There will be a guest act performing at some point during the event. Noise Upstairs @ the Riverside, 1 Mowbray St. S3 8EN FREE ENTRY Doors at 8.30pm Wednesday 17th July Ahead of their upcoming release on the Spanish Makrame Records label, we present two of Sheffield's finest improvisers, John Jasnoch and Charlie Collins. Regular name-in-the-hat jam session precedes and follows their duo set. John Jasnoch began life in 1953 in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in the Thames Estuary. The compost heap of the Garden of England. After interest in instrumental music of Bert Weedon and then The Shadows, began listening to Blues artisits. Acquired Dobro resonator guitar. As a a result of working as lab technician in same lab as Bluegrass banjo player, was persuaded to play Dobro in Bluegrass band – lap style. Moved to Sheffield in 1979, became involved with Sheffield Free Music Group. Joined Bass Tone Trap. Many improvised music performances with ad hoc groups. Played Derek Bailey’s Company Week in 1988. Became firmly embedded in Sheffield’s incrediblely fertile and creative improvised art music community and remain so to this day. Born and raised in Sheffield UK, Charlie Collins is a product of the city’s rich improvising tradition. Since 2007 he has played regularly with altoist Sonny Simmons, collaborated with theremin player Beatrix Ward-Fernandez and worked with free-folk collective The Hunter Gracchus. He has also toured with Ted Daniel and Michael Marcus in their Duology project and performed with Rob Brown and Daniel Levin. He is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top of the Pops (with Moloko).
  10. The 'Jazz at the Lescar' series are putting on the saxophonist from Squarepusher's Jazz trio, Mick Beck. Here's some footage of Mick playing with the back in 2005. Based in Sheffield, and a fixture on the UK improvised music scene for many years, and collaborator with the likes of Derek Bailey and Paul Hession as well as Sqaurepusher, Mick is joined for this gig of slightly more straight ahead music by three open-minded and exploratory musicians from the younger generation, drawn from the Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield jazz scenes. They share a common intensity and in combination will bring rhythmic looseness, strong group interaction, and harmonic freedom to the music, to match the leader's improvisational flights on the saxophone. Expect to hear tunes inspired and composed by the likes of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. Lescar Hotel, Sharrowvale road, Sheffield S11 8ZF ÂŁ5 entry Doors at 8.30pm

  14. What sort of group do you have in mind? Karen Lake and the Swing Shots do Jazz and Swing stuff. At full force, they're an 8-piece band but they also go out as a 4-piece (vocals, piano, double bass and drums) for quieter settings. Karen is one of the best Jazz singers in Sheffield, in my opinion.
  15. Brilliant Corners Jazz Club - live Jazz night @ the White Lion (3rd Tuesday of EVERY month!) A local jazz night giving the stage over to a whole host of local musicians. Expect beautiful ballads right through to burning Be-Bop; meaningful Mainstream to mad Modal; furious Funk to the frightfully Free; lively Latin to luscious Lounge; and classic Cool through to the curiously Contemporary! This month at the Brilliant Corners Jazz Club we have the amazing talents of vocalist and songwriter Sally Doherty. Sally has composed music for various BBC productions, TV and radio, as well as several albums of her own material. She has a passion for the recordings of Chet Baker, João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto performing Jobim songs, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan and Julie London as well as admiring the songwriting and voices of Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, Sandy Denny and Nick Drake. Sally is currently playing with pianist Paul Kilvington; together they have recorded a collection of songs including some original compositions and some interpretations of unusual Latin American songs as well as jazz ballads and latino folk songs. This huge mix of influences and inspirations guarantee that it will be an incredibly interesting night of fantastic music - there promises to be something for everyone. We are also very happy to welcome back guitarist Jamie Taylor who has been described as "enormously impressive" (Jazz UK) with "an uncanny ability" (Just Jazz Guitar), although what ability they were describing is unclear. He does a mean Buster Keaton impression which truely is uncanny - sounds just like him! Brilliant Corners regulars, Graham Jones and Johnny Hunter, will once again be providing the double bass and those circular things that are hit with bits of wood to go "ba-dum-bum-tsssch". Get there early to avoid the disappointment of getting there late. Sally Doherty - vocals Jamie Taylor - guitar Graham Jones - double bass Johnny Hunter - drums Tuesday 15th May – music starts at 9pm. The White Lion 615 London Road, Heeley S2 4HT 0114 255 1500 FREE entry & great BEER.
