  1. Hi Tara, there were two coal men living in Wincobank then. George Challoner and Ken Haigh. Ken lived in the big house at the top of Standon Rd, the Challoners Lived opposite your old house (no 63 ?) on Newman Rd. They has 4 children, Constance, Arnold (my classmate at Wincobank school) Alma (married Brendan Ingle) and Jean. There was a Static Water Tank built in the top of Challoners big front garden, opposite my Grandmothers house (no 73), during the war and we spent many happy hours playing in and around that tank, till we got chased by various neighbours, saying " Get out! Somebody is going to get drowned !!. Ken Haigh was our coal man cos' him and my dad were old schoolmates from wayback. They were happy days then living on Newman Rd , got nowt, but enjoyed every minute. Did your dad work at Shardlows?.
  2. I used to deliver papers on Standon Rd in the early 50s. Miss Stinger lived in the top house on the right. Had a big fearsome dog which some nights used to tear the evening paper to shreds. The big house at the top on the right, in its own grounds, even had a tennis court !. Ken Haigh our coal merchant lived there. They had the first tv I had ever seen. after i'd put their paper through the letter box I'd watch the tv through the window, compleatly gob smacked !It must have been one of the first tvs in Wincobank. Happy days !.
  3. Ey Up Bert'!, long time no see or hear from anybody who was with us in 3X/5y. Thinking about it, it's a bloody lifetime ago!. It's your old mucker Geoff Smith, originally from Wincobank, but now living in Rotherham for the past 55 years, (but still a Wendesdayite!! ). If it's ok, I will private message you and have a rabbit about old times. Nice to know their is still at least a couple of us left !!!.
  4. Hi Dave Lev, Yes I knew all your family. We grew up together on Newman Road. They lived at no 75, we lived next door at no 77. I have photo somewhere of your dad and me riding up Newman Rd on our pushbikes in the early 50's?. and another one (somewhere) with your G/dad, Nan, uncle Joe and auntie Hazel and others, taken during the war ( about 1942, I think.) I'll try and find them out, then I'll PM you.
  5. Hi Dave, I passed the Railway on Christmas Eve, there was a For Sale sign up and all the windows have what looks like Newspaper up to all the windows. Its been like that for some weeks!. Pity, used to be a great pub, it was my local when I used to live on Newman Road in the late 50s early 60s, when Sam Crapper was the Landlord, ( he kept the best pint of Magnet in the area !.)
  6. Hi Hillsborough, had a look at your map, (what year was it ?.) I have a Alan Godfrey copy of the Wincobank & Meadowhall 1902 Old Ordnance Survey map (2nd edition ) which actually shows the layout of the buildings, the kiln and the chimney and is described as "The Brickworks"!. Still brings back happy memories !.
  7. You're dead right Local Blade, the Brickyard Quarry on Shiregreen Lane, was another great play area of ours. I think after the quarry was exhausted of clay, the raw materials were shipped in to keep the kilns working for some time, till the Brickworks finally closed. The quarry had water in it . 2 to 3 feet deep in places. A great place for sailing home made rafts on, until we got chased by the local Bobby!. Again, Happy Days !.
  8. The Brickyards already mentioned were not in Wincobank !. The one in Wincobank was on Vauxhall Road,( Victoria Road, as it was in 1905). I have a 1905 Ordnance Survey map which shows the Brickworks and small quarry. I was born and bred on Newman Road (NO 77 ) and as a young kid, this was a great play area for us. Happy days.
  9. Hi E5006368, I was born on Newman rd, in the back to backs, our house was on Newman rd, bang opposite Mrs Hugh's fish and chip shop. My mother lived in the house till they were pulled down in 1968. Your uncle George lived in the big yard, (court 9) behind us. He lived next door to the Pym's and the Palmers. When I left the Central Tec'h in 1953, George helped me get a job as a apprentice bricklayer at Gleesons where he was a Gaffer. He was a real good guy,!. Wincobank was a village in those days, It stopped at the last of the old houses opposite the school on Newman rd. From the school up Newman rd, was an open area up to the old houses at the top of Newman rd and that was classed as Shiregreen,!!!. The other side of the road was a valley across to Fife st, which was filled in over the years and known as either Chapmans or Schofields tip,( can't remember which now,!!!). On Barrow rd, Wincobank stopped at Bill Curtis's Garage (now where the medical centre is). Barrow rd changed to Tyler St, then open ground ( known as The Riggs) to Brightside. On Ecclefield Rd, Wincobank stopped at the end of the old houses, where there used to be a ladies and gents brick built toilet block. The smelly brook which runs between the two bridges is the dividing line between Wincobank and Blackburn. Any body living out side those boundarys was Not a Wincobank Villager,!!!!. Enjoyed every minute of my time there.
  10. Looking for Norma Hunter, used to live on Langset Road in the middle 50s, (241,I think?) Dads name Ernest, moms name Edith,(Cressy?)
  11. Hi Redfyer, Derek Brown and Maurice Salvin went on to the Central Tech' after Newall, they were both in the same form as me at the Tech', as was Trevor Swancot, who I think came off Liverpool St and Allan Roly. They were all good school mates, havent seen any of them for years. (I moved to Rotherham 44 years ago!! )
  12. What about "The Cow Sheds" under the old Norfork Market Hall. First time I went in there was 1956, I was in the Army at the time ,home on leave from Germany, doing a pub crawl around town,(like one did when home on leave!!). Can remember going in, but can't remember coming out.!!!!. Happy days,!.
  13. Luton St is listed in the 1967/68 street guide, Dunlop St, to Short St, Attercliffe, 9.
  14. Hi gaz, my wife Marjorie Wilson and her brother Maurice lived at no 15 Beall st, her cousin Joan Ledger lived at no 13. Baties's shop was in the same yard, there was a family called Grayson who lived in the yard next to Baties's shop, lived next door to the Hobsons, I think,?. Their houses faced the school, Jack Addams lived in the corner house on Beall St ,opposite the school, Jack did a bit of taxi driving. The Ritchardsons, Ray and Ritchard lived in the other corner house on Beall St, opposite the school. Other names, Brian Bodfield, Mick Willets, Gorden Haywood. Happy Days!.
  15. Harold Holmes is the lad I'm thinking of, he was in the class above me at Wincobank School. Brian Davis (Maud Moverlys son), Don Fearnly, Roy Flavel, Allan Hodgkiss Allan Green, were all in the same class as Harold.
