  1. please ignore the above as i put it in the wrong forum
  2. I drove thru Norfolk Park recently and noticed that those disused towerblock flats which have been empty well over a year are still there. Does anyone know when these are finally getting demolished as it must be horrible for those who live nearby living in the shadow of such an eyesore. Plus I want to watch then get blown up!
  3. i think a lot of the trouble with the Manor is people are still thinking it was like it was about 5 or 10 years ago. Things have improved immeasurably in the last few years - most of the really terrible houses have been demolished and theres loads of small new private developments which they have no problem in selling. This regeneration has been going on a long time now and is really taking effect. My friend who far from being anyones fool got a council house swap from Shire Green to the Manor because the houses themselves are so much more modern in his area As for mugging etc Broomhall (right on the doorstep of affluent areas like Broomhill) surely has the worst reputation for that if anyones unwise to walk through there at night. Finally Id have to disagree with you Back to Basics when you say that theres nowhere as bad in Leeds - Ive myself lived in at least 2 areas of many that are worse in Leeds and Cross Green (down on the side away from the industrial estate) makes the Manor look like Dore or Fulwood!
  4. According to the Governments latest (2000) Index of Multiple Deprivation the worst areas are as follows the (lower the figure the more deprived it is). Southey Green/Parsons Cross 43 Burngreave 60 Manor 76 Park Hill 98 These figures are their rankings out of the 8414 council areas in England. Incidentally Ecclesall was the least deprived. Sheffield was 60 most deprived as a local authority as a whole. You can get the full list by putting Index of Multiple Deprivation in google and then looking for sheffield.
  5. sheffield should be very proud of how progressive its council has been in its housing policy over the years...obviously when it started to get rid of its back to backs it meant business and got rid of (almost) everyone one something it now seems to be well on the way to doing with the disaster of 60s planning that were council tower blocks. Unlike Leeds where the vast majority of all the housing is either STILL back to backs or tower blocks hardly any of which seem to have been demolished.
  6. >One thing Sheffield seems to have a histroy with is the free >party scene. NTL are still running parties regularly. Yeah Sheffield is very lucky in this aspect and the police seem to give a fair bit of leeway. I think it must have something to the vast amount of wilderness country right on the doorstep. When i first moved here i was really surprised that this went on. Back around London except for a few things from Exodus (right up near Luton), the legacy of the Free Party Unit (specially set up to combat the M25 parties of 1989) meant that the idea of al fresco parties were just a distant memories.
  7. Can anyone tell me why there are bo back to back houses in Sheffield unlike Leeds where most of the inner city housing stock is still back to back? In Orwell's Road to Wigan Pier he mentioned there were thousands in Sheffield.
  8. werent assumptions being made when you said i didnt know anything about (proper as in clinical) depression? what i have said is that im as libertarian as the next person about what responsible adults do with their own bodies. What I am opposed to however is the kind of talk that sends out positive messages about drugs while brushing under the carpets all the negative issues. Leeds NA (NA being as you probably know not restricted to heroin) run a stall (I'm not sure Sheffield NA have one at present) which travels round trying to spread their message and which provides plenty of examples of personal testimonies of people who became effected negatively.
  9. look pal im not saying i know anyone whos been told to take dope by their doctor i was replying to someone who said she knows of doctors who have said "find yourself a dealer". As someone whos worked for quite a time voluntarily with addicts/homeless and who has in the past had serious problems associated with drugs myself i think im probably more entitled to talk about this then someone whos obviously lived the cosy (good name their cose) little middle class life i suspect you have...
  10. another oldie at nearly 35 - love hard trance which in Yorkshire you can get at Riff Raff and Cabbage in Leeds and a bit of it at Planet Zogg at the Arches and of course the occassional free party. Wish i was about 20 though as i think the harder trance thats been around for the last few years is the best high energy dance music has ever been. Like these type of clubs too because you get a wide range of ages right up to old hippies in their 40s (or even 50s!)
  11. IMO its all bravado..even in the "real" criminal underworld (gangsters etc) most grasses are surprisingly fortunate when it comes to not being "hit". With the eyes of the nation on this case a few petty criminals arent gonna do too much and i doubt many professional hitmen would touch this with a bargepole.
