  1. Small prawns from the North Atlantic are, on the whole, much tastier than larger prawns from warmer waters. Sainsburys Canadian ones are nice. It depends what you want them for really, obviously the small ones aren't very suitable for slapping on the barbie.
  2. Now that I've finished this I have to say it was one of the more upsetting books I've read, central themes of loss and hereditary mental illness and the ending is almost unbearably sad. Very absorbing and beautifully written but oh dear god. I must be a glutton for punishment because I'm now rereading A Pin to see the Peepshow by F Tennyson Jesse, another one with a harrowing finale.
  3. Ok not a product, but Salisbury Cathedral. Magnificent from the outside but little to hold my interest inside. Nearby Winchester was much better but doesn't get anything like the hype.
  4. Dysons and Henrys are both overrated. When we stay in holiday cottages we can pretty much guarantee there'll be either a Dyson or a Henry and they're always useless. I love my Miele.
  5. Off the top of my head, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse.
  6. I've had a stab at The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I was offered a free Kindle book and the choice was Stieg Larsson, Stieg Larsson or Stieg Larsson, so I opted for Stieg Larsson. Now I know a lot of people love this book but I didn't get beyond the first few pages, really not my cup of tea at all. Much more like it is Where My Heart Used to Beat by Sebastian Faulkes. A middle aged psychologist looks back at his experiences in WW2. Very good, but not a happy tale.
  7. And it's nothing special. Just a sandwich shop.
  8. Paula's observation is nothing to do with being grumpy, it's pretty accurate, you do see mismatched groups wandering around at this time of year and you know they're not going to be long-lasting friendships. I came here as a student and for the first few weeks I hung around with people I'd basically been thrown together with, it took me most of the first term to sort out who I really wanted as friends.
  9. My daughter did very well at Silverdale but my son hated it. He moved to High Storrs for his A levels and got excellent grades.
  10. This turned out to be pretty good once I'd got going with it, a spy story which isn't a genre I'd usually choose but I enjoyed this one. I'm now on Slowly Down the Ganges by Eric Newby. This is classic travelogue and a re-read, I went through an Eric Newby phase 30-odd years ago and I don't know what prompted me to pick this up again but I'm glad I did, even though it does seem very dated now.
  11. I have to say "Four Lions" did spring to mind.
  12. Really pleased to see this thread Disgusting stuff, I've always thought so, I can't even stand the smell of it.
  13. I was told a small bottle of Guinness a day was the way to go and had an 8lb 10oz baby. How times change. This was in the 1980s not in prehistory.
  14. I think a team did get the dreaded "nul points" once so possibly not an all time low, but yes a very shabby performance. Mind you the winning team only got 140 I think? Not a brilliant score either and hardly stiff opposition. A pretty poor round all in all.
  15. I've lived in Ecclesall, just off Ecclesall Road South since 1990 and like it well enough. It's handy for both town and the Peak District and walking distance to the bars and restaurants further down Ecclesall Road. It's a good area to bring up kids, quiet and leafy, good schools.
  16. Are you renting or buying, and what's your budget? There are nice areas but as with everything else you get what you pay for.
  17. Don't be daft! OP presumably you should all be ok with meat, fish, fruit, veg, eggs? Nothing to stop you and your child having things like bread, rice, potatoes etc with them. I used to have to cook for someone who was coeliac, lactose intolerant and soy intolerant, that had its challenges!
  18. Restless by William Boyd. I've got off to a slow start with this, I've read 3 or 4 others by Boyd and got into them very quickly but this one, not so much. Early days so reserving judgement.
  19. It featured in a film I just happened across on telly one night, called Among Giants.
  20. So what were they attempting to do, was it going to be housing?
  21. Does anyone know what's going on with this place? Building work has been going on for what seems like forever and they don't seem to make any progress, it's just a mess. What's the story?
  22. I was all ready to be disappointed but thought it was ok, really no different apart from the presenters, the format is identical. I'm not sure about Noel Fielding though. His face always looks too big, somehow.
  23. East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I'm quite enjoying this but it's a bit plodding at times and over long in my opinion. Goes on a bit. This is my first go at Steinbeck, I've avoided him up until now because I expected him to be a bit dull and worthy and I think I was half right about that. 6.5/10
  24. Ah sorry no I meant we get a bottle out every Christmas, I've no idea whether Lidl still stock it.
  25. Fruity and flowery but not truly sweet or dry, somewhere in between. We bought 6 bottles online from Lidl a few years ago and it comes out every Christmas, only one bottle left now though We've always struggled to find it in shops.
