  1. Well I think the Dan Walker either exaggerated or misunderstood the situation and ran with a story that was misleading, and I think that Tony Foulds just got carried away with it all and didn't know when to jump off. I don't doubt that he has helped look after the memorial, but maybe not for as many years as claimed, I think the council and other volunteer groups have always maintained it. But it did I suppose bring the disaster back to the attention of Sheffielders, which is a good thing.
  2. The Capt Tom thing started with a lovely man doing something really nice, but quickly got turned into something else. Another complete fiasco was the Endcliffe park Mi Amigo memorial guy. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the lovely John Birkhill who just gets on with what he does, yet deserves to have more recognition.
  3. How can they charge the parents for buying them, when it's not illegal to buy or own one? How would they prove that the parents bought it, and which parent? What if someone else bought it, how would they know who bought it?
  4. I think they generally do get a visit for house burglary, particularly forensic officers. But burglaries aside, when you think about it, an officer visiting is often nothing more than a comfort blanket to make them feel better, and isn’t always needed to investigate the crime. Often most of an investigation can be done without visiting, which is why they don’t always visit.
  5. That is true, the 20,000 officer that Boris recruited don't even make up for the officers that were lost during spending cuts and recruiting freeze, so they definitely aren't 'extra'. Plus lots of the newly recruited officers are quitting during or leaving after they have qualified. Thank the police degree system for that - now they join, get their policing degree and take that degree elsewhere with better pay, and better working conditions ie. no night shifts, no days off cancelled at short notice and not having to deal with the scum of society. I can't blame them.
  6. Please share with us exactly what you want the police to do about it, and in particular how they will do it. If you can explain how a police officer is going to manage to stop someone on an esooter if they are travelling at speed, then I might take you serious, until then, you are just rambling on and on without coming up with any solutions.
  7. Lots of assumptions there, you seem a bit paranoid. Some of the kids using them are just kids who like riding them, others are scum, same with bikes & ebikes. What is it you think the police could actually do to stop them? They can't run after them, they can't drive after them, so how do they stop them? It's pretty impossible if you actually think about it. Legalities aside, if I were a kid I would definitely want one. If they ever become legal I will be getting one for commuting.
  8. Why does it get to you so much? Folk worried about the invention of cars, with someone having to walk in front of them waving a red flag, but look at us now. Don't let it stress you out.
  9. I can't wait for electric scooters to become legal, and without being classed as a vehicle. They will solve so many problems and reduce traffic and emissions. Folk can use then to get to work if they work within battery range, charge whilst at work and use them to get home. Or use them to get to the train/tram/bus, fold them and put in a bag, then when they get off the train/tram/bus they can use them to get to their destination. They will make life so much easier. The idiots that will use then irresponsibly are already doing so, so why not let the rest of us sensible folk use them?
  10. I'm not knocking Capt Tom at all, but I think the public were in fear of catching Covid and dying which prompted folk to want to donate to his collection. People feared the worst and suddenly decided to appreciate the NHS staff (remember the banging of pans etc!) but there was no real way of doing anything for them. When Capt Tom went viral folk saw it as an easy way of helping the NHS staff, but I do feel that this was more about the public suddenly realising that they might suddenly be needing the NHS's help in saving their lives. I'll not go as far as saying the public were selfish, but I don't see the same support for the current NHS strike, and I've certainly not heard anyone banging their saucepans of late.
  11. Thank you. Interesting article Not sure if, when my 'MyHeritage' sub runs out, I lose all access to it, or if it just means I can't add to it anymore. I'll perhaps take a look at those alternatives you mentioned, Thanks again.
  12. Could a family tree website help, as they show other relatives etc, though I think you might need a subscription to view etc? hillsboro. without wanting to drift off the OP's topic, are there any websites you recommend for building a family tree, and also for seeing the different bloodlines, and printing it all off please? I'm doing more and am currently subscribed to MyHeritage but my sub expires soon.
  13. On Christmas Day morning I set off in my car looking for John, I'd seen his Xmas Day route posted on Twitter. I drove through Dronfield looking for him and found him coming up Unstone Hill. I stopped and got out to chat with him, and gave him a donation. He's such a lovely bloke and says he is always happy to stop and talk to people, and doesn't put a time limit on his walks, he gets there when he gets there. I wished him well for the remainder of his Christmas Day, but a part of me assumes that Christmas must be a sad day for him seeing as he lost his wife and daughter to cancer. I see he's at £891,095 I hope he meets his target, I'd like to think there is a business in Sheffield that will ensure he does. By the way, his book is a very interesting read.
  14. I normally wear a poppy from previous years, I hardly ever take a new one when donating, I prefer to keep them and wear again the following year.
  15. I've just donated, but would rather have seen him in person to hand the money to, I'll look out for him. Here's his just giving page.. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/madwalker
  16. Haven't seen him out on the streets in ages. His biography is a good read.
  17. Lilys do the best bacon sandwiches I've ever had, though not quite big enough in size which is why I always have two.
  18. Anyone able to recommend a jewellers for repairing a broken metal watch bracelet please? Preferably a smaller non High Street place, or independent guy. It's not an expensive watch but it needs new pins and the links refitting. However I also have a nice Omega watch that could also do with some bracelet adjustment, so would like someone trustworthy and professional, not a stall in the markets. Thanks.
  19. Any idea what a typical cost of a refurb is please? Are we talking £50 upwards?
  20. Anyone able to recommend somewhere in Sheffield that they have used for refurbishing their alloy wheel please?
  21. Their debt problems are much more complicated than just a lack of recent big films and ticket sales. The Israeli Greidinger family who already owned cinemas around the world bought the Cineworld Group pre Covid and they started out on a massive buyout plan of other cinemas, so were already in big debt.
