  1. It's not down to schools it's the parents.

I am an avid reader, I read to my children when they were little and they have picked up the habit, both loving books and reading. When my son was assessed at 11 he had a reading age well in advance of his years. This included understanding the definition of words and the context in the written piece.

It is sad to say some household have no books at all in them :( If children are not exposed to reading at an early age and regularly it's not something they will enjoy.

  2. yes thanks i read it.

hate crime happens to many people and many different groups on many different levels what makes you so special?

bus & tram posters do not help children?? i doubt any child has been helped by this poster.

your other quaestions relate to the same old same old stuff that is trotted out time and time again, ok we hear it we have heard it all before, get on with life , unfortunatly there are things in life that are hard and not perfect, a fact of life "get over it"

i am sure we will never agree on much and i wish you and your friends all the best, but please we really dont need the lectures:love:

  3. the Star is reacting to external pressures in these tough times. Other services rise their prices and the star as a business is no different. It saddens me to see so many slate it when there is no other publication around that devotes six days a week to sheffield news, sports etc.

I get the feeling many won't know what they've got until it's gone. Imagine a city the size of sheffield relying on a WEEKLY newspaper! unthinkable.

It isn't the Sheffield Star anymore it's just the Star. Covering Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley too, we don't want to know about a litter bin crisis in Barnsley. Also for a daily it's news is often very old, citing discussion had here on SF ( word for word) but not giving credit for the source. Lack of proof reading and lazy writing make it a painful read.

  4. Excellent public spaces, parks, galleries, sports venues, theatres. Tramlines festival, fright night, comedy festival, we're a base for visiting neighbouring attractions in the peak park.

I popped into the city centre on Saturday and it felt alive, with the food festival and the excellent buskers entertaining the crowds reminded me a bit of coventry garden in the late 80's

  5. im sure its a listed building hence why it never went years ago when the council was knocking everything down

Not sure there is a document detailing all listed buildings in Sheffield, quite an interesting read actually https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/dms/scc/management/corporate-communications/documents/planning/conservation/Sheffields-Listed-Buildings-March-2013/Sheffields%20Listed%20Buildings%20March%202012.pdf

  6. I think Max was hinting at the fact that the OP moaning was possibly someone who had previously been banned and had come back to stir under a new name. SF is clicky it always has had its groups who get along, we can't like everyone can we and everyone has a legitimate right to challenge somebody's opinion on any thread.

  7. there has been a charge associated with car accident related injuries for years. I was unfortunate enough to be involved when I was motor cycling and needed hospital treatment about 20 years ago. I was given a bill{ not to be payed at the time} which I passed to my insurance company and they settled up with the hospital. at the time this was standard practice.

Its included in most motor insurance policies that they are covered for emergencies which include the transportation of injured people to hospital (cost of the ambulance) and emergency medical care. The NHS have been able to claim this after the event for donkeys years.

  8. Not quite so bad

The padding pools at Rivelin Valley Park are currently closed for refurbishment. Work is under way to convert the paddling pool area into a Splash Pad, with brightly coloured areas of water jets and interactive water play features.

The new area will be a more accessible and inclusive play area. Work has been funded by the Government's Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, which aims to improve services for disabled children and their families, and give them greater opportunities

The new Splash Pad is due to open in early August for families to enjoy. Three of the four pools will be filled in and covered with a colourful, non-slip surface area. A range of equipment will be installed, including water play tables, water jets and sprays.

  9. we did the same when someone knocked on our door. ended up with a big bill and them tried to cancel it three times. we paid up to the date that we informed them we didn't want it anymore and then another bill came for 21 pound my husband refuses to pay this has we had cancelled several times so now we are wanting a court hearing as they nip sold it us go first place

That will be star direct no doubt, never works and I have heard so many complaints from people sold that way.

  10. Yes you can still get your star delivered by the newsagent. Just pay with the vouchers and pay the extra delivery charge. :)

eta: we get this a lot in our shop with customers who subscribe to the guardian and the independent they just pay with the voucher and the newsagent redeems them with the newspaper supplier.
