  1. I'm wanting to hang a pair of old driveway which were (believe it or not!) hung at the end of my driveway when I moved in. I removed them as they were a pain getting the car in and out. I now want to hang them further down the drive at the side of the house, to keep the dog in. They're iron gates with one hook st the top of each to hang from. I'm planning to get a couple of hook on plate shelters from screw fix which on one side can attach to the concrete fence post, but the other side just has the house wall, which is rendered and far from level, meaning if I just screwed the bracket into the wall it wouldn't be in the right place as the rendered area curves in making the space between post and house being wider, with the lower bricked area being narrower. So my question is: what is the best method of attacking the hanging bracket? Should I masonry bolt some timber to the side of the house? Will that be strong enough to support a heavy iron gate? Or should an iron gate not hang from timber? Also should it go through the render or should a channel be made in it? Any help would be appreciated. I've a puppy on the loose!
  2. Good question- because on one the engine was making a clunky sound which even my ancient car doesn't make, and on the other, the container that holds the coolant seemed to be leaking, and the salesman was adamant that this was normal, but this, together with his being dismissive of it, just didn't seem right. It may have been normal, but I don't know, hence my question.
  3. I know there's lots of threads on here about buying used cars, but I can't find one specifically to answer my question. I need a new car and I'm more than happy to have a used one. I've been all over looking and test driving, but have found myself not really trusting the dealers/salesmen. I get that this is the nature of these things. Anyway, my question is, are there people local to the area who know cars, and can go with you to look at a car and tell you if your concerns are well-founded or not? I ask because I have today looked at 3 cars, and rejected 2 of them on the mechanical faults I perceived them to have, with no background knowledge of what the issue might be. I know the RAC and AA will do this is you pay them lots of money, I just wondered if there is such a thing as a local inspecting engineer who does such a thing? I have bought used cars in the past and not known of quite fundamental issues until I took them for a service, by which time, it's too late! Also, any tips would also be well appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  4. That's great thank you- can you send me more details please? Do you have a website/facebook page?
  5. Hi I am planning to hold an event in aid of a mental health charity next year and am looking for a venue to get started. It's a really good cause which is close to my heart so obviously it needs to be cheap/free as I'd like to make some money for the charity. It will involve arts/crafts, live music, academic speakers and poetry. Also activities for children to make it truly inclusive. It must be walking-ish distance from Sheffield station and either have a bar or be happy for me to obtain a temporary licence to sell alcohol. I'm not sure yet what kind of capacity I'm dealing with, but I'm very aware that the proximity to the city centre is massively important to getting people in! Thanks very much!
  6. Hi Can anyone recommend me a good plasterer who is relatively inexpensive please? I need a room skimming, 4 walls and ceiling, roughly 3.5m square. I'm tight for time and money, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
  7. Indeed you can. She is still at the garage at the moment, purely because I'm not very well and don't feel up to walking to get her. I will PM you the address once she's back- this may be early next week depending on the state of my health! I wish I could weld. I keep saying when I grow up I'm going to train as a mechanic.
  8. But I just said I have an offer on the van? Also you get paid for scrap metal. ---------- Post added 04-03-2015 at 23:21 ---------- Ah I get what you mean. It's a long thread, but basically, as I have to pay for the welding, and don't have time to mess about, I'm not going to get a great deal of money back if I can sell her for £1k or 1500 without the work. I've already paid for work this week. I'm not going to get my money back really by doing the work, even if I had time to do it. I'd love to keep her if I could- I already have festival camper tickets booked. But it's just not worth it to me.
  9. Sorry, what? ---------- Post added 04-03-2015 at 23:09 ---------- In the awning or the van?
  10. One would think! Though the English education system isn't known for its logic. At college level though, you're right, they must practice on something! I do think with my van it might be time to cut my losses and learn my lesson not to trust a clearly dodgy MOT cert.
  11. I have genuinely never heard of this (why would I, I guess), though I'm having a similar set up happen with my wisdom teeth on Friday! I shall definitely have a Google!
  12. Thanks. The reason the van is in the garage in the first place is that I told him to just do the work so I can sell her, but we're getting into mega amounts and I just can't afford that kind of outlay at the moment. Particularly with the roof and not knowing how bad it is until they start cutting it away. The welding guy at the garage has said if it wasn't a camper conversion it'd be well beyond economical repair. I just feel it's too much of a risk to take when I'm scraping every penny at the moment renovating a house. She's also a Merc, not a Dub, so there's no guarantee I'd get anything like my money back by doing the work. I'm very sentimental about my vehicles. If this was happening with my Beetle, I'd chuck money at her to keep her going, but I'm beginning to think I impulse bought something and bit off more than I could chew and just need rid. Having said all of this, the van hasn't been delivered back to me with the MOT fail yet, so I haven't actually seen the list of what needs doing. Maybe I'll report back when I do. ---------- Post added 04-03-2015 at 21:37 ----------
  13. Thanks, I'll take some pictures and list on ebay when she gets delivered back. Don't really want to take to new address as we're quite tight for parking with 2 other vehicles on the drive and double yellows outside. I'm glad nobody's said the best bet is scrap value, which is what I was afraid of!
  14. In my experience, as an ex-personal injury lawyer, you would be unable to use your insurance to claim vehicle damage if your MOT has expired. This might not mean that your vehicle would be seized for not having an MOT, but it would certainly make it unlikely that your policy would indemnify you where your vehicle isn't roadworthy. However, this is a bit beside the point as I need to get rid of my van ASAP, mainly because I'm soon to not live here any more and can't drive it anywhere. I got a quote for £150 for scrap. Surely the conversion inside is worth that though? I'll try ebay.
