  1. I guess that explains why some land have these really old brown drafted contracts for "rent" to whichever lord of the land in shillings and pence. Now I am beginning to see why CoE do not get the support which they do because the religion used to be mixed up with the politics. It is pretty interesting. Another eureka moment for me. Now I know why sometimes people refer Stocksbridge or Chapeltown as a "village", even though it has a Sheffield postcode, and some people still refer to it as part of Sheffield. Now I know why there are so many churches, and why that website about the churches highlights the different geography and location of them. I do find it fascinating. Who would have thought? By the way, what is a "warpentake" ?
  2. Pretty. When the mood takes me. But most of these threads then get cleaned up by Mods by the morning.
  3. Where's Woodhead? I would say if you take the Snakepass, then this is the most efficient and fastest way to Manchester Airport. However, you gotta check to see if there are any closure for whatever reason. It usualy close in bad weather only, but otherwise it stays open as this is the most used journey. I would say, if you use the snakepass, then the average time would be less than a hour, if you drive at 60mph, from S10, to Manc Airport door to door. If you have to travel within sheffield to get to the beginning of snakepass which takes longer, then add that time on top of this. A conservative figure is 2 hours even from the other side of Sheffield to the beginning of the A57. If there are less of you, there is a good train connection which take you there from Sheffield. The train journey is less than a hour.
  4. I think it does depend on families and different backgrounds. For my family, and even my grandparents generation, they still used log-burning stoves, and I am glad to know this and have knowledge of this. I think my parents built their own houses too, and reap the fruits of their own labour. However, it seems that to build your own house is more of a luxury than it used to be. There are many self builders out there though. Whether something is of a luxury depends on how you view that object. For me, I think cooking and eating fresh item is a luxury in this day and age. As the cost of fresh produces are so extortionate. It should not be like that.... I do not think that just because something costs more because of economies mean that it is a better item. It is better for "a" reason, but if that reason is not what you are looking for, then it's pretty moot, imho.
  5. I guess the local Churches have no governing power over the old parishes within Sheffield any more? Or are there still parishes left in Sheffield or outside of Sheffield which have this kind of power? There was an old thread about Ecclesfield. With the extension of the Sheffield postcode, does it mean that more land and areas would be absorbed by the City of Sheffield? I know that the S post code extended itself in the Mosborough area, and it's just occurred to me that there is a "Mosborough Hall". Was that the provincial governing town hall at that point in time?
  6. To be honest, I would say GO FOR IT! I think it is indeed just "passing comments" which your neighbour is talking about. I bet that she would change her mind if you told her that you have never ever had a car before in your life, and that you had been accruing your "green points" all your life time. Or that you have not seen this long distant relative of yours too for years. Then I would not take much notice of her at all. I am also the same. I am generally pretty green. I have never had a car in my life, and I don't own a driving license either. I shop locally and I reuse my plastic bags too, and sometimes take my own bag for shopping. I've changed my boiler to a condensing one. (Out of my pocket.) I've changed my light bulbs. I've started to compost, (I don't know how that is doing.) I also discovered the joy of freecycle. I've reused and use my relatives and family's furnitures too and turn it into something else. Yet, I will probably save and pay to see my mother who lives across the world from me. I think if something adds value to your own life emotionally, just go and do it. Forget what you should and should not do just because of a neighbour. If they were a close friend and know how much it means to you to see your own family, then they wouldn't make such a comment. Yes, it seems somewhat flamboyant to be so flash in these economic times, but it is also a time for friends, families and good times too. If you saved all week just so that everyone has a nice meal, then I would say, do it. Whatever floats your boat. [Added] Oh, on the note about ethical living. I think a lot of people have already thought of that too, and it is really for those who never thought about how they will survive in this world over the long-term. For those who have thought about it, they have already started to make small changes which would enhance their lives and for the long-term, without dependencies by the government, or any other person. It is not all about "fitting into the system". Sometimes I am glad that I had such strict parents who instilled in me what lives used to be like for them, but then booted me to jump into the rat race. Cos you cannot really live without money, but yet you cannot live for money, without provision of some kind of self dependency away from any establishment.
  7. Was the Parish like a governing body at that time in history? It'snever occurred to me to look back in history in how Sheffield was formed. It is pretty interesting to see that it is made up of so many different smaller towns and villages into a city. I've lived there for 15 odd years and I never knew that.
  8. Maybe it's time that the train companies rethink about their ticketing system? How about putting seat numbers on the actual ticket? At least you know what you are selling, and this then make the conductor's job so much easier, because frankly, there would be no need of that role. That is how a lot of countries run their train system. At least, people will also get a seat as well, and not let the train companies cram people in as much as they can with very little added extra seats or carriage to cater for this kind of overspill. This number of years on since privatisation, and they still cannot get it right! This bugs me a lot. Also, it is truly unfair to have to cram into a train for 3/4 hours just so that you can get home for Christmas, or to get back to university and so forth, at what kind of a price?? Sundays are always manic on trains.
  9. I go for whatever I can get, and also whatever my budget allows. Money - of course there's always a budget, and if the money is not right, then I have to buy manufactured foodstuff. Time/Availability - If I see a fresh market with fruits and veg, then I will go for this. Though, I would not go out of my way to find one, if I am limited for time. I try to go for more wholesome items now, and less additives. Less E numbers, and less preservatives. This extends to all food items that I buy. I have not gone for tin at all except for a few items like tomatoes, baked beans, tuna.
  10. I am also the same too. Convenience - on days when I do not put myself first and do not have time to think. Health - on weekends, when I have a lot more time to myself, and can think back to what I ate, and try to offset and be a little healthier. Emotional nourishment - on days (and I think this applies to guys and gals, I think) when you are down, you tend to have not healthy food, and just food which reminds you of a certain good time in your life. For guys, it tends to be drink. For girls, it tend to be some kind of comfort food. For me, I try to cook the food that I used to like and remember as a child. Lasagne, black bean spare ribs, soups... etc.
  11. Oh, some single grapes are not really for the taste. For example, Merlot is used in some blended wines to give it that red wine colour, and also a little bit of the red wine taste, but on its own, it tastes very sharp. I never knew this before as well until I had several bottles in front of me and tasted what the difference is between all of them....
  12. I was reading the thread about the mosque and stumbled across a website about the churches in Sheffield. I didn't realise that there are SO many! On one of the webpage it mentioned that Sheffield was a Parish town. What is a "Parish Town"? Do you think that it is still here? Do you still go to church? Or I just getting the wrong impression of this because there are so many posters who posts that don't go?
  13. That's really sad news actually. I hope he rest in peace too.
  14. Oh sorry. I forgot to say, "I'm a girl".
  15. But nobody really cleans it after a while. I remember that too. Maybe there could be something to put forward to the council? To have a public aquarium or something of the sort which local wild life can be viewed. Or maybe the Winter Garden can have a pond with tropical fishes in there or something, where it is always warm? Other places where you can see fishes are Botanical Garden. There is a stream which have some wild life around. There is also the Leeds' Roundhay Park where they have the butterfly house, but then there is a section where it has tropical fishes as well. I remember always going there when I was a kid too.
  16. Oh my bloomin God indeed. Everything has its time, and if the market shows that the salary is low, then what do you do? Do you still demand a high wage even when there is less of a demand for a work force? Maybe when the UK economy was doing well, then migrants can indeed work in the UK for a proportionately higher rate than they would back home. However, now that the pound is so weak, I am so sure that the migrants would want to go home and earn a higher wage in their own country because the currency now favours them back home. IF, there is a deduction of migrant workers like this, would and will the unemployed of this country do and work in anything that the economy demands? There are a lot of articles now about UK seeing an increase in tourism. Will anyone take an opportunity and move towards this sector, or will they remain stubborn and just sit through the wave and go back to whatever they were doing before? I don't think anyone is invincible to the world's economics. As for care homes. I think it is a tragedy that you don't live with your parents and grandparents any more under the same roof. However, what you said is quite ludicrous. If migrant workers work in a care home, then who are the bosses that control the management and the structure of this care home? Is it not a British National? Why don't you just rant at the top bosses who rake in the money, rather than the lowly blue-collar workers who is just trying to make a living?? If there is no demand for care homes, then there would be no workers to do this kind of job. Also, if the government did not outsource every darn thing, then this would not have created a situation whereby privatisation of care home is possible, and that you can have a person who cannot even communicate with you in the same language to take care of your needs, and therefore isolating you more and more as an elderly person! If you hate the system, then vote it out. Or opt not to send your elderly family into a care home. Some people would try and earn so much that their families would never be treated like so. Using elderly people as a political tool is a bloomin disgrace! I'm surprised that this happens so often in this supposed great society of ours.
  17. http://www.citywire.co.uk/professional/share-prices-and-performance/share-factsheet.aspx?InstrumentID=1568 I wonder what happened to the contract in the end?
  18. A lot of people will and do have the decency not to grab hold of a stranger and just rant at them for historical reasons. As you say here in the UK, it is better to leave politics and religion out of the social communication with others. Though what is interesting is also the religion in Japan. I went to Osaka and Kyoto. Kyoto has some magnificient temples which is part of the World Heritage List. You can walk around and even visit the insides to see the big wooden temples, even if you are not a believer. It is almost like a museum, which you pay an extrance fee to browse around. I found this the most fascinating. There are also some animal figurines which you worship as deities. If anything, it is interesting to see and view, which you can see and compare with your own beliefs. Oh, you also have to try conveyor belt sushi, and find a pinball parlour! I find that Japan has a very high standard of living overall even in their lowest price range of items, whether it is food, or shoping. The quality is pretty good. You will find this extended to hotels, and eateries.
  19. Yup. That's the difference. You either choose something which encompasses all people, a common human joke, which transcend cultures, or you laugh at parts of yourself which you are proud of, but it not as critical and based on external judgement of you. You would think that any grown up adult would know when to say something and when not? There was a comment about kids copying behaviours from tv comics. I think that is pretty true. They have no idea how it come across when said to another person to their face. I used to have kids which goes "ahhhh choooooor" at my face, and I just go home pretty upset at their forthright manner. Just because they have seen it on a karate kid video or something! Talk about stereotypes. If I know what I do now, I would "ahh choor " back at their face and just use that as an excuse and beat the crap out of them by making a few dodgy karate moves or something.
  20. I ditto this one. What you need to recognise is the difference between "old world wine", and "new world wine". A lot of the new world wines are of a single grape variety only, and the taste that you get is just based on a single grape's. Whereas a lot of the old world wine are based on blendig grape varieties. This is why sometimes you also get a little variety as you drink the bottle as it keeps changing and oxidising with the air too. It's as if it is "live". Wines from St Emillion and Margaux are pretty good. Most of them are mostly bordeux. That typical "red wine" taste is based on Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Normally what I would do is use one of those pouncy red wine chart and find a decent year which the grapes had a good crop, and then pick one which is around the drinkable age now. You can always go to a M&S and pick any bottle, as they are quite decently blended. I think they've started to work with wine merchants and blend their own from differing region. I've no idea what year and what grapes, but the taste is pretty okay. The vintage mixed grape penfolds are also pretty good too.
  21. You also have to remember that frontline officers may not necessarily know of the elimination factors within the forensics department, and the detail of the forensic aspect unless they are of that department. I do not think that the judges would use one single evidence to conclude acase. Most people would throw it out by using one single source alone. A lot of cases are using various evidences to support and deduce the culprit. What makes a gripping story is how the culprit was deduced in the end, and what gave the game away. You should indeed pick up a book on forensics, as it is quite fascinating. I remember doing a module in this at uni. I now find it funny that CSI is so popular! That program covers that of what you get in a basic university module, or A-level standard. I think we've raised your game a bit here. Make that 2% for me please.
  22. Do you mean, to speak "truthful facts", or to speak "ugly personal derived rants" ? There is a big difference between the two.
  23. Depoix, any first generation British muslims may have already assimilated into the local british culture over the course of their lifetime, and that is a choice of theirs. What is it to you, to critise and judge them so harshly? You know what, now I see the same thing from older British citizens who have roots in the UK who is going through some kind of identity crisis. Maybe it is because a lot of them cannot take this kind of difference which allow them to be so vocally and verbally rejecting of anyone else who is. Who really cares that much about taking sides and taking arguments? Just do what you want to. If you feel loyal to the country, then do so. If you do not feel as loyal to the country, then don't. If you have no association or family ties in the last world war, then don't feel that you owe it to justify yourself. Yet, if you did have family who went to war, and feel proud of this, then show it. Intrinsically, every individual have had a different family past, and yet, here we all are, supposedly having to get on. So I would just let others get on with it, instead of continually moaning at them. Even if someone went against THEIR own religion or culture to try and fit in, or to try and be socialable, you would never recognise it any way! Since you commented that the individual went against his own religion, than to actually be kind and fit in with his social group at the time. Maybe if men were not so selfish, and see that others are their enemies, then they would see the hand of friendship when it was extended to them.
  24. Okay, then what about people like me? Even though I am NOT a muslim, and I have stood up and said against some of the opinions on its own merit, and not relate it to THIS particular incidence a long time ago. Why should I get abuse from others who do not see things "as is", right now? It is like they have no clue, and nor sense to curb their own understanding and words. It is like they already have an agenda in their own minds to begin with. I have been told to "go home", and I truly take offence at that. Even though I am not a muslim. These comments come from some of SF heavy-weight people who throws in their usual daily political rant, day in, day out, and forgetting that they live in a society with others people in it. How do you exactly explain that? Do you mean to say that once people saw something on tv, in a snapshot in time, then it will mean that it will forever be like that? Well, if that is the case, then I continually see and think that there are a lot of closet racists at large in this day and age. A lot of casual racism, and less intelllectually fair-minded individuals than ever before.
