  1. No, my definition of pseudo-science is the joe public perception, and my usage of that term in my post was based on what Joe Public cannot seem to understand and condone, or have access to more substantial papers. i.e. just another slang word in general term. I know by definition by scientific terms, what pseudo-science means! Hey, why exactly are you biting onto this point about my usage of the term pseudo-science, have you actually read the whole thread and understood the thinking behind each post here online? I do not understand why you seem to need to battle this area with me. Really.
  2. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/mortgages/article.html?in_article_id=438952&in_page_id=8 Worth reading to see where the FTB can position themselves in terms of the rates and so forth. Fees may be high for the lower rates. So I guess a fee free, with a little higher rate, but not too far above 5% would be a good. I don't know if that exists.
  3. Well, the standard variable rate for different companies will bebased on their own calculation and they can specify how many % above BoE as they like. I thought that CAT standard was going to be 1% of BoE,but apparently that got abolished! I did not realise that my existing mortgage then was NOT CAT standard. So much for wanting to future proof it. There are actually a lot of free resources for mortgages that you can find online, and play around with the calculation and see what you think. There are different products out there for different purposes, but the main thing is whether you will remember to monitor your own mortgage and spendings when you do get a mortgage. I stupidly went for a capped mortgage when the rates were slowly decreasing, and I am so glad to switch over now. I think because of how the rates are low right now, it does not make sense to go with a higher rate if you can help it. For those who wish to feel secure and pay fixed outgoing for a number of years, then maybe it is worth going for a fixed rate. However, for those that do can take the risk, then the discounted or the trackers do not seem so bad right now. There are excel spreadsheets which you can download to check how the sums will look, and if you change the rate mid-way too etc. [Added] 6.7% seems high, as many lenders are hovering around the 3-4% for some reasons if you really look and compare them. However, if you are happy in securing it for such a long-term, and if your loan is not like 500k+, then this smaller extra 1-2%, do not seem that high overall.
  4. LOL. Because people do not believe it, so it was labelled as pseudo-science. Are you telling me that people will buy the fact that energy can be transmitted without wires? Are they not going to disbelieve this at all? Your average man will indeed label this as pseudo-science because they cannot comprehend it in their mind. In fact, in the other thread 2 years ago, I suggested the particles of movement and the effect that it has on one another from a relative scale. Some of it was based on a new scientist article that I read years ago about the possibility of small particles relativity, but it was dismissed outright. Funnily enough, I currently reside in Cambridge, and come across a guy who is researching into this area, which I found intriguing and kind of exciting. The research has moved forward now, from a mere theory years ago in a published magazine to current research within the time span of 10-15 years.
  5. Throw away the textbook and think for yourself is what I was implying in this thread. Anyone can and could quote the textbook, and that limits the possibility of thinking that there is more. I was postulating in this thread, and not actually wanting to exchange facts, or to preach as some seemed to want. If you cannot discuss with someone on the same wavelength and level, just for the banter, then you should and ought to stop. I saw a few posters as equal in knowledge, and because they were of an inquisitive mind also, but if they think that partaking in this was because someone was preaching, then I have nothing to say... They could have left the thread as they choose. Just like I did. Which I will do so again. Simple. I don't think there was anything more to add after what was written. Yes, it is a prettty sore point when it reached that kind of ugly personal jabbing. Yes, I also learnt this kind of personal online tactic. Maybe there should be a "Manual 101 - How to survive on the SF".
  6. Even though it seems primitive and simple, the change of season is still followed by many people across the world. To many, this was science back then. As man expand their brains and mind to encompass all sorts of ideas, new concepts and theories fall out of the woodwork. The latest supposed wishy washy pseudo-science without basis that I have heard are: - Love affects our biology. The generation of endorphine and increase of heart rates and bio-mechanical states, affects the biology of our bodies, which prolong or shorten our own lives. - Energy research into collision of particles as minute as protons and electrons. If you can predict how these particles behave at this kind of molecular level, you can possible use this to extend to transmission of energy without wires.
  7. Well, it did not take you long to draaaaaaag it out, and including te past. Give it up! You're now a married man! If you cannot even be bothered to see why you used to string up people and do not even extend on their discussins, then don't. I will definitely admit that I am on the same wavelength as Epiphany on subjects like this, whereas you used to take it beyond further, and in a way to squeeze every ounce of information from the other person. Where is the fun in the discussion? If you so want to discuss topics, which you want ABSOLUTE facts, and ABSOLUTE information, then I suggest that you should indeed look away from a forum such as this. Go and do your own research, cos you seem to want to do just that. For me, I just want to pick each other's brains in a more respectful manner which both parties can find acceptable, whereas you had always wanted to bully someone into submission. Suddenly, you're like Flamingjimmy, and is pressuring people for an answer, which yourself can just as simply google or something. That's what make me detest and angst at discussing ANY scientific topics with you, cos you're a rottweiler like that. $ years or so on this forum, I think I've learnt something about you, and how you "discuss" things. Sorry if I come across as rude, but I really do not want to drag up the past, and how great discussions just used to go down the pan.
  8. Well, looking forward to the debate and contentx from this young un! But good luck with your exam tomorrow. I genuinely mean that. Anyway... stop analysing on this, and I am just waffling now. I would forget about this for now, and focus on your exam. Best of luck.
  9. You know, I like to think that I am a woman of science. Indeed I was taught to think in an analytical way as a science student. However, I am also a person of belief. That I do truly accept of myself. Atheism can also be seen as inacceptance and disbelieve of something the person do not know the understanding of, and the reason to. Whereas others may believe and choose to believe atheism as a choice of rebellion. Whatever the reason makes an individual an atheist, it does not matter to others one jot, if they genuinely believe it. Cos it really should not matter. I think the crux of the matter is that, there are people in this world which uses subjects, ideas, to control others in a way which they do not want to be controlled in. THIS is what makes people fight. It is the inner sense of freedom which people want to express which fights against this kind of control. Maybe that is why you seem to make references to Bush, Blair, the US, Women Lib... Gay Lib ... etc. There are many truths and interpretation, because people are still merely human, and they only see what they are able to see and relate to, from what they have learnt so far, that it constraint them from further knowledge and acceptance of each other. Anyway, ideas merge and crosses, new ideas fall out, and new concepts are endorsed. The world is indeed a big and complex place. From your words, it comes across as if you do not wish to want this kind of complexity in this world.
  10. Personally, I find you a little bit rude in "pressing" Epiphany for information and explaination, when it is ideas, concepts, which is normally covered at GCSE level, or even first year of A level. Learning is a private thing, and you should learn at your own pace, and understand your limits in areas which you are unsure of. If you do not understand something which is written, then say so. Instead of pushing someone to the extreme and then "demand" them to tell you, instead of recognising that they are also plausible in their ideas, and words. To be honest, you have also not offered anything at all. All you wanted to do was press Epiphany for ideas and expanding what he wrote. Yet, you have not joined in, and gave an opposing argument, that is, if you do not believe in what is written. Surely, it means that you have an idea in your mind, as to what is possible, and what is not? So, in your own words, what is that? (Not that I really would buy any other ideas, cos I have my own understanding, and I know I personally do believe in pseudo science, and I am also open-minded to that too.) Exactly, what do you think pseudo science is? What part in this discussion did you disbelieve in? The OP mentioned that people used to use astrology like science is today in modern society. Do you accept this? If not, then under what basis do you not accept this on? Plus, why?
  11. Ok... let me have a stab to this... even though epiphany kept saying that he is humble and have humility and does not wish to answer it entirely, but then he kept going anyway but missed this one directly... even though he has given you all the clues in naming the subjects which covers all this. You can say that again... Ok, ok, I'm kidding. Let's begin the dissection shall we? That is, if you seriously want to understand it all. Cosmic environment = planets, sun, vacuum, clusters, nebula, galaxies ... Empirically = basic empirical formula in physics for Motion. i.e. One of Newton's law on Motion. Basic physic theory like magnetism. It is all empirical, because Epiphany has not gone indepth and talk mathematics and more scientific. I think it's a little bit out of the scope of a social conversation to be honest. Talk any deeper in detail, then you would lose half the posters. Plus, it's hardly seemly to be discussing science in a very factural way when you are not the researching scientist. At best we are all postulating here from the materials and information which we have been exposed to. To analyse something esoterically, you have to have the same mindset within that group of people, which already know the basics, and then you can further brainstorm and analyse that particular subject. For example, physicists would see and view the subject of astronomy in relation to physics only. Whereas astrology may be seen as pseudo-science because of it not fitting into physics, or biology. Biology may not have a viewpoint of astronomy in relation to how it affects our biological makeup. This area is also considered as pseudo-science. To summarise his paragraph, there are scientists out there who would discuss esoterically about the world, and about the planets. From a scientific explaination, or from an astrological explaination. I am sure that people are trying to blur such areas now because there is a common relationship. On grey areas such as this, which is still plausible, and subjective, it is non-conclusive as such, but it is an area which some people have started their research work on. It does not make sense because you have not been exposed to such subjects as yet. Hence you seemed to be frustrated in your learning and understanding of this area. If you have been exposed to some of the basic theories, then it would allow you to understand it much easily, and you would not seem to be so pushy in pressing for further information from Epiphany in a rude manner. lol.... I've no idea how he can be so patient, I would have flipped by now.
  12. Will you marry me? This is a very well written post using simple laymen terms to explain some very complex ideas.
  13. FlamingJimmy, are you under 25? You know, I thought that Ephany gave a decent written post, and I don't think I could have done better, and kept myself restrained in a manner when pushed and pressed for information rudely by others, but kept my cool, and explain to individuals who should know better and find basic answers for themselves. You mentioned that you have exams, so I gather that you must be prtty young. There is no point "arguing" with someone and pushing them for an answer in a very proud way when what they have written are pretty much dumbed down layman version or words to decribe very complex matters. I think it is lessrude of you, if you went away and did some basic reading and understanding of the basic theories which Epiphany have touched upon. It just cracked me up when he lost it finally and said "for God sake". Haha ! Gosh, I have enjoyed some of his words, and discussing, and I cannot recall this kind of decent thread about theories and discussions for a long long loooooong time! I think SF used to have a lot of these kind of threads in the very beginning, before a few individuals had hissy fits and threw their weights around, and then scared off the rest. Hehe. People start t lose the subjectiveness of the discussion, and start to bring in their own inadequacy of the subject itself. A couple of years on, I do recognise this kind of behaviour.
  14. Finally! I've seen this on YouTube. I've been meaning to watch this show, just because it was about a local place. I was really surprised at the programme's content, and was also actually quite moved by it. The fact that there is an individual who has a dream, and has a business, has a very supportive partner, and a very loyal friend who does his catering side of his business, this idiot (sorry, but if you are reading, then you are,) is a very lucky man indeed! I genuinely feel that the owner do not know this industry well, and I did feel sorry for him when he wanted to show Gordon Ramsey that he "did" have good reviews once upon a time. However, what he does not seem to know is that market conditions changes all the time. As an owner, you have the duty to yourself to keep your business above water, awards or no awards. Even Goron Ramsey was genuine and honest in the programme and mentioned that his restaurants closed. If it means losing all his restaurants in total, closing a few to reserve the cashflow is not a dumb thing to do! I do not think that anyone can predict the future, and if nobody can, then why would this owner think that what was yesterday's feedback and comments apply in today's current climate, or to be acceptable by tomorrow's diners? I am actually quite excited by this place after I read the Sheffield Telegraph's review that it has "potential of foodie's dream". Well! What an accorlade. To be frank, I champion the Telegraph's writing more than the Star's. Martin Dawson is just a socialist at heart and not a true foodie by some of the comments which he comes out with at times in his reviews. Sometimes he does not even rate a place if he doesn't like the style of food, or that he is not knowledgable in that cuisine. Yes... I have been reading. I have read the comment that this used to be the jazz place with food. If this is that "111" place, then it should have gotten its act quicker a long long time ago. As the combination of decently priced food, with music in the city centre was not even available 4 or 5 years ago. I think Crystal really broke that mould. Now, the "music+decent food" combo seems to be saturated in the city centre. As you now have Crystal (didn't they serve food too?), Sylvester's, Sanctuary (they tried), The Ivory... Maybe they should now focus on being that little bit more different in their menu choices and competitive in pricing? I still cannot believe that a Sheffield restaurant without any star by AA, or the Michelin Guides can charge on the same pricing band as a starred restaurant. I think that this is taking the mick. Truly. I am actually looking forward to dining there, since now they are doing the same style of 15 pounds for 3 courses, just like the Blue Room. On a Saturday too. I am also gobsmacked by the expensive prices of their a la carte. I do not know who writes and calculates their a la carte menu, but they should quit while they are ahead. If you cannot sustain your suppliers, then don't put it on the menu. If anything, in a small business like this, they should have a rotating menu to use fresh ingredients all the time. Just like the Ivory's. At least it ensures that you do not waste food, and your suppliers are able to keep up with you, and stock for a monthly basis. I like their pie menu idea, and I hope that they would continue to be rotating the style of pie choices each time. I hope their services are getting better though.
  15. Fair enough. If you like their food, then you must like their food. Though, if you were a serious sushi diner, and compare it overall between all these places, then you would know which stands out a lot more. I am actually is surpised that you rave about it, but yes, everyone's cup of tea is different. However, apart from rating whether a place is good or not. I personally like to read reviews about what is good and bad about a dining place, as a critique and homage to the chefs. Maybe that's just my view on reading these kind of foodie reviews. I personally like to banter with like-minded foodies who like to try and express what they like and dislike about a dish, and a place. If there is a fan club, surely the thread title would be "ABC Fan Club" ? Just a thought... Saying that, back on topic, have you ever tried Yo! Sushi? As afterall, this thread is about Yo! Have you ever tried their sushi, and what do you like or dislike about it? Cos they are another conveyor belt establishment who managed to bring conveyor belt sushi to the mass market.
  16. If you need a super lightweight one, or the specialist kind, I would try Feld and Trek from online. Or Rab. There are quite a few Canadian website which do international shipping as well. If you are okay with the average weight, then any local shops will do. I'd check out CCC as said.
  17. Well, new cars are extortionate aren't they? I'm looking for a second hand, but I was just curious what people drove. This friend of mine is now getting his first proper car, but is paying at least 1.5 times than he would've if he was back home here in the UK. I remember when my sister had her first car. It was a second-hand peugeot 304. She used to be so precious with it, and told me off whenever I slammed the door. Such a mardy bum.
  18. In the Loop - 8/10 British comedy. Boy, I did not expect the storyline at all, but it was nicely done. I just loved all the American-ism. "Keep me 'in the loop' " is a phrase I do say a lot at work. I watched it in one of these small arthouse cinemas, and yes, I could hear all the public school boys laughing their heads off in the jokes referenced to Public School. I guess it's a must see.
  19. You sound like you have shares in that place, cos every single sushi thread on this forum, you've not critically talked about the sushi itself, but just praised Sakushi anyway. Do you even like sushi? Or are you just promoting your friend's establishment? I'm curious...
  20. Some of the things could be premade, but others you have to cook it and then put it together! The branch in St Pancras shows you the chef making the sushi. i.e. using the rice and then slapping a piece of fish on it or something like that. Actually, you cannot pre-made sushi roll and expect it to be fresh. I have seen a youtube video and it does show that some supermarkets will buy frozen sushi, but I don't think Yo Sushi make pre-made rolls. Maybe they would pre-make the skewers and cook on the day, but if you want fresh crispy seaweeds, you can't pre-frozen it. It's just not possible. That's why I stay away from supermarket sushi if I can. Surely you can tell the difference once you try it?
  21. I heard from my cousin that it's arrived already. I was surprised when she did say that it's only outside House of Fraser. Maybe it's not a large dining place? I'm keen to check it out the next time I'm there though. The only franchaise which used to be up North is the one in Selfridges in Manchester. I think they have expanded quite a bit. I still find it odd some of the combination which they put together, and it is bordering onto tapas style eating really. There is one in St Pancras station as well.
  22. In which case it sounds so specific, and maybe it may work better if you know of someone who knows the person hiring in person and then go through the agency this way? I know that because there is a cut in staff, a lot of admin work may be done my temps. Even in my current company, it is the same too. To hire temp staff until we blow over the worst and then the big wigs will then decide on the number of perms moving forward. Well, I wish you luck. Cos finding the part-time work can be frustrating and you have to go over many paperwork and assessments first. I'm sure it is getting pretty competitive right now too. So I would go in person into the agency and express your interest.
  23. Hi there. Your post caught my eyes. It's interesting to see you write "evening office job". Normal office hours are not usually from 5pm onwards, unless it is a call centre or a 24/7 operational centre. In which case, they may not necessarily want just 4 hour shift people, but a whole shift for the night. i.e. 8 hours. Would you not consider looking for jobs like working in the sorting office in the large Post Office Depot, or be in a call centre. Is Freeserve still there? Or even Tesco or Asda with their stocking shifts over night. Or some new take-aways which may need drivers and so forth. Or bar work.
  24. Even if people find it odd going into a shop which is a little bit empty, it is okay if you make your setup really welcoming, and homely. I think a lot of people's first impression is whether it would be welcoming or not, or they would think whether the 1) the owner is a hard salesperson, or 2) if the owner is checking me out to see if I would steal, or 3) the owner looks grumpy, so I better not make eye contact. I would make the general setup really homely and comfortable, and your display to be personal and very colourful and full. It shows that you do care about pets, and you have a good choice of selection and taste in your products that you believe that it is good for your own pets. I like the owners who don't mind me looking around and leave with a smile on my face after I have looked at their stuff, rather than a grumpy face cos I did not buy anything and I have wasted their time. If you're having a bad day or whatever, I would not just sit there, but pretend and potter about to avoid eye contact. Well, it would be what I would do. I was just looking in a wine merchant window whilst waiting for my bus when I thought that it is hardly going to invite me in to check out their wines, cos they use glass display cabinets and have the same bottles of wine displayed in a row, with very effort in showing their wide range and collection. I didn't think it was very appealing. http://images.inmagine.com/img/photodisc/pdsi006/pdsi006034.jpg If your window is huge like this, you can always use half of it, and display a large selection of fun and rare items to entice customers to come in look a little bit more? Display with prices would then allow the customer to pitch whether your shop is an expensive one or not. Some people have a scan of a pricelist and never venture into a shop. [Added] This one looks more enticing and like a toy shop than a pet shop. You can see that the shop owner is there nearby the window and is talking to a customer. It's a nice setup that you still get some light into the inside shop. The display really draws in the eye. All the items are toys for the pet if you look carefully. It comes across as if the owner cares about the products he is selling. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2282/2126979637_5405fdf8a8.jpg Compare that to this one, which looks very factual. Clinical and not homely, right? This type of display is very common if you look everywhere. http://www.symbolicforest.com/img/onblog/being-human-location-1.jpg A pet shop in New York apparently... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3216/2939869263_7fdcc4c7e1_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3069/2940615014_8a296246b4_b.jpg http://www.sciencepatrol.net/
