  1. Possibility of far more serious cold/snow next week. Only a possibility mind, but probably worth keeping an eye on. Could range from cold and dry to an absolute arctic snow blast, but it appears we should be in for something...
  2. Cheers for the help, got down there today and had a really good time, very impressed!! 12 quid for the round, greens in very decent nick generally, rough tough but generally avoidable, some tough holes uphill that's for sure! To be perfectly honest, for 12 quid on a Saturday afternoon I don't think you can go wrong - guy in the pro shop very friendly too. One very very minor gripe is a lack of rakes for the bunkers, which can mean you get some dubious lies and have to pick and place, but that is being very fussy! I'm not from round here initially, but I've got to say that for pay & play golf round here we must be very spoiled! I've now played at Concord, Birley and Beauchief and had really enjoyable rounds at all of them. Well done SIV - golf can be a slightly intimidating game for beginners (with no club, no handicap card and a good few duffed shots in the bag!) and this seems a great place to play on relatively excellent muni's.
  3. Cheers fellas! Any more local knowledge highly appreciated. Are the greens decent (relatively speaking - wouldn't expect glass-like surfaces!)?
  4. Hi all. Fancying a round of golf tomorrow afternoon and have seen a little bit of stuff on the web about this course (but old info mainly!). Was wondering if anyone knew anything about it, cost, condition, quality of greens etc? Also, can you just turn up and play or do you need to book? I'm not expecting Carnoustie or anything, and have played Beauchief and Birley (really enjoyed both), but the shortness of this one is appealing for tomorrow as I'll be playing with someone who is quite a beginner (and I'm no Jack Nicklaus, to be fair!).
  5. Seeing as it's too good an opportunity to turn down, a few friends and I are looking forward to doing a bit of beer drinking whilst watching England crash out of Euro 2012! Anybody got any decent tips on pubs (S10 way or into town) where watching big games is decent? I know the Beehive and Old Monk have atmosphere for games, but they are exceptionally busy and England at 8 on a Friday night will certainly not be quiet! Any good little tips appreciated!
  6. Coming out of the station today about 4 or so policemen on bikes came flying through blowing whistles and shouting at people crossing the road to get out of the way. This was swiftly followed by a couple of big black 4x4s with tinted windows and a couple more coppers. Wondered if anyone knew who the VIP might have been? My first thought was Nick Clegg, though I don't know whether he gets that full treatment as DPM (though I guess you could argue he needs it!). Any ideas? *Edit - this was at about 5 or 10 past 5 this teatime.
  7. That did cross my mind, yeah, but my initial instinct was not.
  8. Very good, all of you! I realise this is exactly the kind of thread where I'd think 'why the bl**dy hell have you bothered posting that' but my curiosity (nothing else!) was aroused, so went for it.
  9. This will probably sound like the most random thing ever, but here goes... Has anyone else had a strange phone call(s) about house cleaning, or carpet cleaning or something similar. Me and a friend both seem to have had similar calls this week, from someone claiming we'd spoken before and wanted our houses/carpets cleaning. The guy is apparently gay because he said something about his boyfriend to both of us - in my case that 'he'd have to shout at his boyfriend' for wrongly giving him my number! It was one of the most surreal calls I've ever had, and the guy just didn't seem to take 'no' for an answer when I told him I'd never spoken to him, his boyfriend or anyone else before, and certainly didn't want to pay someone to clean my (small!) flat. Perhaps this doesn't sound too weird, but something just separated it from the normal marketing calls I get (and I seem to get a lot!). So, anyone else come across anything similar?!
  10. Another top notch meal at 7 Spices on Friday night, though don't get out as much as i'd like! Jalfrezi to absolutely die for.
  11. I'm considering ditching the old 'auto' as our American friends say, and jumping on the train instead, as I've calculated that it might actually equal fairly major savings. I live in Broomhill and work within a 5-10 min (max) walk of Westgate Railway Station. I generally need to be at work before 9.10, though some days earlier, and the train times fit in quite nicely with this and offer decent flexibility. At 10 pounds return, the cost is very similar to the return journey cost in petrol. Also the bus service from Broom - Sheffield Station is pretty good. I am secure in my current job (well, as much as is possible!) for the forseeable future and so reckon I'll get by without a car for the next 18 months at least. All of which leads to my question... on paper it all works perfectly. Does anyone out there have any experience of this (or a similar) commute, because all I'm left considering are issues like reliability and punctuality of the trains. I've used the route occasionally without issue - are you able to depend on them day to day?
  12. Cheers all (including those who've PM'd), I will bear that all in mind and do a spot of ringing around. * The parked in a pond bit made me chuckle. It is parked in the road outside which I think has been the problem partially, also it's 10 years old now despite only having one careful lady owner before I picked it up (32k miles 2 years ago for 800 quid!). Also, it is probably a crappilly manufactured car that wants to rust through when you drop a cup of tea!
  13. Hi All. Dreaded MOT today and the testing station failed my W reg Fiat Punto on the following: Front exhaust has major leak of exhaust gases Offside rear (innersill) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Offside rear (floor) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded Exhaust emissions Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits It has 48k miles on the clock and runs pretty much OK (touchwood never had any other issues with it). I was wondering if anyone had any idea whatsoever at the sort of cost you might be looking at for repairs to fix the above - it seems like the sort of stuff it'd be tough to ring around and get a price for and I don't want to drop it in somewhere where they reckon 'about 350' and then find out 'it was worse than we thought so the price is 700'. Obviously, if that were the case, I'd have to think about taking a last drive to the scrap yard (which ideally I'd like to avoid). Help very much welcome! Cheers.
  14. The OP's partner could have done with a good beating if only they'd chucked an egg as well. In the good weather today he'd have baked beautifully on the way home. In all seriousness though, that is quite a moronic thing to do. Someone fired a water gun into my car window once (but thankfully it was only water!).
  15. Hi I was wanting to listen to Rotherham v Macclesfield game tonight (Macc fan in Sheffield but can't make the game). Was wondering which radio station (if any) covered their games - I know sometimes the BBC cover different games on different local frequencies. Any local knowledge on this would be very much appreciated! Cheers.
  16. I think 7 Spices is absolutely lovely and would always choose there for a meal out - good location in walking distance of town centre / Kelham pubs and bars too. Beats most others I can think of hands down in my opinion (in quality and value). There are lots of decent ones though, and I seem to find a new favourite takeaway every week (damn JustEat!).
  17. It's looking really good from my brief visit and it's great that the Notty's back open - first pub I went to on moving to Sheffield as a student in '05 (t'was a Sunday night for Cax's Quiztime Craic with free nachos and cheese!). One suggestion I'd quietly make would be a jukebox (it used to have a good one in there a good few years ago) as I don't think Broomhill has one of those at the moment. All the best with the new venture, I hope people get behind it.
  18. Hi I snapped one of the handbrake cables on my mk2 Punto the other day, have removed the interior plastic covers, removed (most) of the old cable and purchased the correct new cable. However, I have found the unclipping of the old bit from the brake drum/fitting of the new one a bit tricky so could do with booking it in somewhere to get the job finished off. Was wondering if any of SF's mechanical minds could give me an idea of the sort of price I should be looking at for this work? (just to re-clarify, I have the part, I think it basically just wants fitting.) Thanks very much.
  19. I'm a teacher and have been through a couple of inspections (Ofsted and ISI). Yes, schools are different when Ofsted are in. However the independent school I was at was also very different when the ISI were in. Does this mean that the school is worse on a normal day? Probably not - the obsessive paper-driven planning and data cramming that goes on for an inspection does not make the child's experience any better. If anything it gives the whole thing a horrible stiff air, with everyone on eggshells and the kids utterly bemused by all the ridiculous hoop jumping they are suddenly made to do in lessons.
  20. Great restaurant, excellent value. Very highly recommended.
  21. Definitely to do with the great trains, fabulous service and tremendous value the railways offer. Certainly not the immense rises in petrol and car insurance over the same period.
  22. My best mate (last year, he's 24) had it done, for the same reason, which gave us a good 18 months of constant laughs in the pub (a lot of mick taking!)! In seriousness though, he had a bit of time off work and had to take codeine for a little while. Other than that he seemed fine - I don't think he was even in hospital overnight. Also, he said he was pleased to have gone through the full thing to get rid of the problem once and for all, as it had been dragging on before that. Good luck - from his rather graphic descriptions the initial rupture sounds far worse than the surgery (and in the end he had to laugh about that too!).
  23. The way people bang on about teachers not being able to discipline, before frothing madly over any school/teacher that imposes any minor penalty on a student is ridiculous. Who'd have thought that the 'experts' that frequent SF would be so muddled..?
  24. Brilliant, brilliant place. I could not recommend it more highly. Went in '08 and it's great value, beautiful and atmospheric. If you go before Xmas, the market is fabulous. Only a 50 minute trip to Auschwitz as well which is well worth dedicating a day too. We're off to Tallinn this year for a winter break. Don't think it's as grand or as reasonably priced, but am hopeful that it'll be good. Again, it's meant to be a lovely place for a few days.
  25. Well, obviously, but you should never be in that situation - it is irrelevant if you're driving properly. If your overtaking on the speed limit though, you'd of course be entitled to be in the right lane (until you had got past the slower vehicle). Anyway, the point remains.
