  1. I don't care too much for Trump, but he was elected President by a lawful process, whatever one's opinion. However no one is surprised to learn that he had made his money my sleight of hand, shall we say. However he may boast and bluster, the US In ternal Revenue Service are after him. Ninety years ago in the USA a chap called Al Capone was evading all sorts of law enforcement until someone noticed that he hadn't paid any taxes.........
  2. I wish not to detract from the solemnity of the events that are upon us, but the uniform tailors and the people who make clerics' vestements must have been busy. The principal mourners seem to have an endless wardrobe of different outfits, and broadcasts from the church(es) showed serried ranks of church officials and attendants in fine robes and surplices. Will their business slow down in weeks to come?
  3. I was born in Norton Annexe of Jessops Hospital in late 1942. The maternity units were dispersed to avoid doodlebugs. My birth certificate says Sheffield, my baptism certificate next door in St James chiurch says diocese of Derby. The Norton townships were supposed to be annexed by Sheeffiield/Yorkshire before WW2 but the paperwork wasn't signed off until 1945. So I am split down the middle....

  5. A couple of years ago the refs wanted a ban on substitutions during time added on at the end of each half. The managers protested and it was no implemented.
  6. I gather that the Rattus Norvegicus Appreciation League will be having a march through the park next week. Brown rats came to this island as illegal immigrants around 1720 or so. THe Home Secretary is yet to comment. Is there a Pied Piper in the Town Hall? If so he should be tuning up, there's a job in S8. On second thoughts, a good job for the Chief Executive. On third thoughts there must have been two brown rats, you can work out what happened subsequently. 😎
  7. t only takes someone's success to bring out the curmudgeons on here. The girls won the tournament, however the manager is a nice, clever lady who comes from our neighbours across the North Sea. Cue tears and rending of garments, etc. Ladies football has inproved out of all recognition in the last few years at the highest level. They are fit, fast, and skilful. Some of the passing was delightful. They kept running for 120 minutes on a hot July afternoon. They didn't argue with the referee unlike their easily offended male counterparts. They didn't fall down sobbing, pretending to be shot like that Winifred Lala chap whenever they lost the ball. And the pretty blonde who scored the winning goal kindly gave the photographers an image that will be pinned to schoolboys' bedroom walls for years. Great day.
  8. Yes, I have seen this topic elsewhere. When one poster said that 40% of the men's team identified as black players, another poster pointed out that black males only composed 4% of the population. It's an endless cicular argument. Let's stick to the game on the pitch. Good luck, girls.
  9. I forecast a Sunak versus Truss final. Sunak is clever, but Liz has the better legs. Truss to win.
  10. Can I suggest that all 11, 12, or however many candidates are all sat down in an exam room next week. the paper in front of them would test their arithmetic. Multi choice answers if you wish. Q1. If Jack has ten pence and spends eleven, how much is he left with? a. Nothing. b. He will owe someone one pence. c. We will all have a sunny tomorrow, next question. 2. Alf and Gertrude are OAP's, living in rented accommodation. Their net income is the basic state pension, about £10,000p.a. In October their energy bill cap will rise to £3,300. What should they do? a. Put on another vest and turn the lights off. b. Make me Prime Minister, and let the fairies sort everything out . and so on.
  11. Most of them are not household names. Even in their own households......
  12. Remember he’s got nowhere to go. No house. And no money, ex took most of it. So, wife and two kids, homeless. you almost feel sorry for him.
  13. I have just read a piece on why Sunak resigned. It's not because of the PM's repeated denials and subsequent apologies when confronted with such as the boozers and the gropers, it's because Boris has zero understanding of financial cause and effect. He just wants to throw money at any perceived problem, and not worry about where it comes from. Sunak may be hard to understand sometimes, but he is a shrewd operator. Furlough was his idea, it was simple and implemented very quickly. It worked. Now he sees dark clouds on the horizon and wants to curb excesses now. Boris wants to cut taxes, increase handouts and bluster away. So Rishi has walked, and I respect him for that.
  14. I have found a jumbo sized paperclip ideal. And fold a couple of notes so that you can pull one out without having to flash the whole wad. Glad to learn that you have a bulky wallet.........................😉
  15. Amidst the brickbats can we concede that the Tory Parliamentary Party didn't hang sbout. Brady disclosed that the thershold had been achieved on Monday morning. The voting was conducted early Monday evening and the result announced later thaat night. Boom Boom. This didn't give time for all those opinionated talking heads to rush into the TV studios and tell everyone what to do. Perfect.
  16. Grange Ironworks on Earl Street (behind the firestation). Made me some nice handrails, not expensive, on time and delivered to my door. Plenty of stuff in their workshop similar to what you want. I will use them again without hesitation.
  17. I wouldn't object to paying £4.00 for a very very good cup of coffee if it was the best in Sheffield. But the bilgewater offered in most Costa franchise outlets is undrinkable. I would make all recruits go to somewhere like Bragazzis(*) on Abbeydale Road and sample a cup of their coffee. Then tell them that is what yours should taste like. But it never does. (*) other independent coffee shops are available. They can be found all over the City. I have sampled three or four on Sharrowvale Road and they were all up to a good standard, vote with your feet folks.
  18. Laura Kuenssberg (who I don't always agree with but who is smart and shrewd) has described Boris as the outstanding politician of his generation and at the same time the most flawed politician of his generation. I think that nails it. Whilst Boris may have gathered round him some 170 acolytes who will vote for him whatever, the main interest of all 359 Tory MP's is ensuring their own re-election. If a contest is triggered, and even if Boris wins a majority, the slide will have started. Remember Thatcher and the 'stalking horse....' The last leadership contest was beteween Boris and Jeremy Hunt. Hunt came across as very capable, but didn't have Boris's charaisma and backing singers. Boris has never given him a ministerial job because he is too much of a threat. But I notice he is catching the speaker's eye quite often these days. Watch this space. Added: Remember that, should Boris be ejected he has no home of his own, and no money to fall back on. His ex took most of that plus their Oxfordshire farmhouse and will no doubt have a clamp on his pension. No love lost there. And his City chums who have 'subbed' him in recent times will melt away when he is no longer in a position of influence. I doubt he will be here at Christmas.
  19. Rain falls in the catchment area, creating a head of energy upstream. As water evaporates, it forms clouds, etc. Its a 'free' cycle A chap I know lived in Ashford, alongside the River Wye. He had a couple of small turbines installed, however the power generated ws very small. But, unlike wind and sunshine they never stopped........................
  20. As the season ends for us all, statistically Blades are the 24th best side in England, Owls are 48th. We all have to be realistic. As Blades proved a few seasons ago, if you want to get promoted, finish in the first two. It's no good moaning at rcent results going against you, the buliding blocks of promotion have to be put in place in the first half of the season. Never mind, it all atarts again in about twelve weeks or so. II hope Blades can hang on to some o ftheir best players, but Gibbs-White is only a loanee whilst Bergerand Egan must be in someone's sights. I hope Owls can hang on to such as Bannan as well. That's football, folks.
  21. You can get sensory deprivation by watching Channel 4 late on after six pints of real ale.
  22. I try to see both sides of this issue. But....if the dreadful war in Ukraine had not happened when it did, Boris would have gone by now. As it is, at the first sign of trouble his minders had him on a plane some where out of the firing line, playing Boris the Statesman. Who is the alternative Tory leader, you may ask? Well, when Boris was elected leader he made sure that his opponent - Jeremy Hunt - who is a very capable candidate - never got into the cabinet where he could build a platform, etc. I wanted to like Boris, and had hoped for better. But he has let me - and everyone else - down badly. You feel that one more whoopsie and he will have to go. Slippery b***er.
  23. Re spect for having a go - good luck. Does the book have an ISBN number? I was always led to believe that it made the difference between a pamphlet and a proper book. When I had a book published some years ago I was fortunate to belong to an organisation that had a "spare" number. So, two copies to the British Library, etc. Best wishes, Tim.
  24. Putin made his "inner circle" very, very wealthy by way of corruption. And he tucked away a fair chunk fir himself. However, that same inner circle now find themselves in reduced circumstances - assets frozen, yachts seized, etc. And they will stay that way whilst ever Vlad is head of state. I reckon they have lined up the replacement, he (or she....) will be a smiling face and appear very contrite and reasonable.Vlad will take all the blame. But he won't be around to say so, they'll put something in his tea......
  25. McBurnie starting up front. What can possibly go wrong…..
