  1. Have just found this thread during my own family history research. Looks like there are some good links and pieces of info re the 12th York and Lancaster. My Gt Grandmother's brother was in the regiment (Charlie Evans). He joned up in 1915 and was one of the lucky ones who lived to tell the tale, leaving the regiment in 1919 and living until the mid 1960's.
  2. Don't know if this assists, but from some records I have, the 1924 Burial relates to a Charles Henry Jackson buried at Tinsley Park Cemetery (Barleywood Road) on 23rd Oct 1924, agd 61yrs. Have also found details of a 1901 burial in the Cemetery at City Road. Jackson, Charles (Shoemaker, age 63). Died at Royal Infirmary; Buried on June 29, 1901 in Unconsecrated ground; Grave Number 9843, Section Z.
  3. Vanessa Don't know if its linked or not, but my Great Grandfather Frank Shaw Barker married a lady called Frances Congreve in 1931, they lived in Attercliffe / Darnall on Surrey Road. I know that Frances had been married before to Francis L (possibly Lawrence) Congreve and her maiden name was Franks. Frances and Francis had at least one son, also named Francis but I don't know much more about the family I'm afraid other than the info concerning burials which has come to light hilst I have been researching my own family tree.
  4. Bit late in replying but only just joined this forum. I went to all three, Handsworth infants 1971 to 75 (Headteacher was Miss Merredith, remember Mrs Billingsley, Mr Saw, Mrs Daper). Went on to Athelstan upto 1979 (Headteacher was Mr Dore whilst I was there) and finally onto Brook, leaving in 1983 (Mr Pollard, Stokes, Breen, Aizlewood and many more). Happy days.
  5. Thanks for your kind words. My Uncle (Dad's Sister's husband) was born on Alfred Road, his parents were Bill and May Shaw and I have some older relatives on mt Mum's side who lived on Newhall Road (the Lakin's) who had a grocer's shop, way before I entered the world though! On Mum's side I'm descended from the Humphries and Chamberlains who lived on Mons Street, Paget Street and Bright Street to name but a few. Still go down Attercliffe quite a bit on my way to work but lots of the old buildings gone now. Our back yard, outside toilet and all is underneath a factory unit called Eriks but Hemmings' garage is still there on Norman Street. The building that was once a pub on Alfred Road is still there near to Stevenson Road but hasn't seen a pint pulled for many a year. Sad really that most of it's gone but often find my mind wandering to years gone by as I drive Newhall Road past where we all once lived.
  6. Have just found this forum and been reading through some of the messages. I was born in Attercliffe and lived in Ebury Street just off Newhall Road. We lived in the same yard as my Great Aunt and Uncle and most of the family lived nearby in Coleridge Road, Brompton Road, Swallow Street and more. My dad was a supervisor in the number one mill at Brown Bayleys which later became Hadfields and his dad worked there before him. We left the cliffe when I was 4 in 1971, but still went back for years after as we used to go to the 'Moulders' now the snooker club and meet with friends and family there. Have many happy memories despite only being young at the time. I've been looking into my family history for a couple of years now and some of the posts I've read talk of people who may be part of my family. I'm descended from the Rodgers family on my dad's side who moved to Attercliffe from Woodside Lane and my Grandma's relatives were Barkers, Liversidges and Hoylands who all hailed from Attercliffe and Darnall, with a hint of Cartwright and Coupland also included in the mix! I've had some problems finding out about my great Grandad and I'm hoping there might be somebody out there who can tell me something. My Great Grandad was Frank Shaw Barker who worked as a miner, possibly at Tinsley Park and I know he lived at 66 Surrey Road in 1948 which was the year he died aged 67. His wife was Sarah (originally Liversidge) who died in 1926 and she had previously been married to George Allsop Coupland and William Henry Cartwright (both died young in mining / quarrying accidents). What I haven't been able to fathom is how Sarah and her first two husbands came to buried in the grave of the John family who ran the Duke of York at Darnall. Anyway, I've gone on for long enough at the moment and need to get back to reading the posts, only 36 pages to go.
