  1. The fact remains that regardless of whether its a con or not, gas prices seem to be doing nothing but increasing at the moment. All I really want to know is whether anyone has actually had a modern electric heating system fitted recently, and what they think of it.
  2. But unfortunately, not all neighbours are willing to even acknowledge your existence, let alone agree to a compromise. The guy I lived next door to put his tv/stereo on that loud that we could hear it in everyroom. There was no getting away from it, apart from moving out. All I can say is that living next to someone like that can have a serious adverse impact on your life and wellbeing, so get out if you can
  3. The point I was trying to make was that if you have Gas Central Heating, the gas will run out/prices increase...then you have to have a new system as it will become redundant or too expensive. Electricity can be generated by other things (wind, water, solar, nuclear) so ultimately is a safer long-term bet
  4. My husband works shifts so goes out at all hours but I never hear him and I'm in the same house!! In general people do not like to be disturbed by other peoples noise but there is a huge difference between a hard of hearing neighbour having the tv on a bit loud or someone setting off to work at 4am or even a baby crying in the night than a 30-odd year old bloke coming in a 2am, off his face and deciding to play a load of crap 90's techno (with the odd celine dion or whitney huston track thrown in - freak!!) as loud as his stereo will go while screaming at his dog and dancing round in his underpants.
  5. The day/night issue surely only relates to electric storage heaters which build up heat during the night when historically electricity was cheaper. Not many people are on those sort of tarriffs anymore. Of all the new builds I have seen in the city centre, I don't think any had 'storage' heaters. They all seemed to have the capability of producing instant heat as and when you need it. As for the bills, obviously your electricity bill will be high but you would not have a gas bill at all.....surely that off-sets it. And as gas is running out, prices will only keep rising as supply slows down.
  6. Thanks BTW for the info ChrisTPS..... I shall bear in mind what you have said and if I ever find out whether the vendor has accepted my offer, I may well call on your expertise :-)
  7. I think it will be cheaper as you can eliminate gas totally. As I understand it (lots of experience looking round new appartments in town) each heater has its own timer and thermostat so, for example..... if you work in the day, you can set bedroom/bathroom/kitchen only to come on in morning = not wasting heat in living room/spare bedroom/dining room. You can't do that with GCH unless you go round turning radiators on and off. Surely just heating the rooms you use rather than everyroom will be more efficient. Plus washing machines are cold fill and if you don't have a bath and fit an electric shower, the only hot water you need is for filling sinks - which isn't much.
  8. Isn't everybody forgetting one thing.... regardless of who designs the routes and plans the timetables, the bus service in Sheffield can not improve unless there is a HUGE improvement in traffic flow, idiots stop parking in designated bus lanes etc. Afterall a bus can't move through traffic which is gridlocked.
  9. There's a cheap xmas shop on church street in sheffield city centre - next door to pizza hut. But if you want better quality stuff, wentworth garden centre usually has a good selection
  10. I think in this case the least expensive alternative would not be to upgrade the current hot water system. I don't know much about plumbing but I'm pretty sure that a 40+ year old back boiler attached to a very nasty fire and gigantic hot water cylinder would take a lot of upgrading. My plan was a dry heating system, electric shower and if it exists, some form of electic water heating for the kitchen and bathroom sink. Its a small house, only 2 occupants, no bath, just a shower enclosure.
  11. Not an electric boiler... I think they call it a dry system - separate heater in each room (each with own timer/control) electric heated towel rail in bathroom - no pipes, no boiler... Would also have an eletric shower so I'm hoping there is someway to heat water to kitchen and bathroom sinks via electrical means too. I really want a gas-free and hopefully boiler free home
  12. I got 3 quotes varying between £4k and £5k - 2 of them just wanted me to sign my life away on a credit agreement while the third actually provided a totally different service. They suggested different styles and options which the others never mentioned and never mentioned credit agreements until I was ready to proceed and asked them what they could offer me. I was honest and told them what I could afford and they negotiated with me. In the end, they were not the cheapest but the service and products were brilliant. They are called Sheffield Window Companty and I'll definitely use them again when I move home.
  13. I have just put an offer in on a house with no central heating system. I am considering having electric heaters fitted rather than gas central heating. They seem to do this now in all modern flats - ( I don't mean like the old fashioned night storage heaters). But has anyone actually had this type of system fitted. Any recommendations or words of warning???
  14. I really feel for all of you. I spent 7 years living in a 'well built' ex-council house. The bloke next door seemed to think it was ok to come home at all hours and stick his tv or stereo on full blast. If I complained it just got worse and the council could do nothing to help. In the end I sold up for £20,000 below market value, just to get away from him. It was literally making me ill. I then had an equally bad experience with an appartment at Kelham Island. I'm currently hiding at my parents detached home and feel sick whenever I think about having to buy or rent anywhere. Don't let it make you ill !!!
