  1. I've never heard it before and lived here 35 years. Strange how it only seemed to start at 4am. Is it a private party or some sort of public event?
  2. Darnall? Really?? I'm in S35 and it was as though it was coming from next door. Didn't hear anything until 4am and then it carried on until the rain started. Lets hope its a one off
  3. To be fair the elderly folk of Grenoside haven't had any proper shops in walking distance ever. I've lived here 35 years and at it's peak there were 3 newsagents, a sweetshop, a postoffice and a butchers..... that was 25 years ago. Thats been wittled down to one newsagents, a postoffice, the butchers and an on/off cafe/deli. A shop at the bottom end of the village is very welcome but putting it on the crossroads is utter stupidity.
  4. woop woop Argos and Pets at home.... all my wildest dreams have come true!! Lets hope the new Asda doesn't take as long to get up and running
  5. Surely they would have to do something with the junction at the top of Wheel Lane and the A61. Traffic is awful round there at the best of times. We really could do with a shop or two at the bottom end of Grenoside but being so close to the cross roads is just crackers
  6. Thank you all but can anyone explain the difference between to 2 checks as I am baffled as to what the diffference is but yet got wildly different quotes. Car is now fixed btw and only cost £30. I'm just interested to find out who was trying to rip me off
  7. My car started pulling a bit to the left. One garage told me I needed a Steering Geometry check and another said a 4 wheel alligment check was needed. Can anyone tell me what the difference ios please?
  8. Oh and mine has lived in sheffield for at least 70 years so I guess that now makes this a valid topic. As for 'ugly'.... surely that comes down to personal taste. Just because something is old and not a mass produced plastic item on a shelf in ikea, it does not mean it is ugly.
  9. I have one of these items. It's made out of wood and stained quite a dark colour - like a dark oak. It stands on the floor and is about 5ft tall. There is a section in the middle (about 3ft up) which holds books. It was my great aunts and is probably 70-80 years old as I think she had it as a wedding gift. It has been rewired to have a modern fitting. The only difference is that it is a standard lamp - not a reading lamp.... so it takes a normal lampshade. It's brill though as you always know where you left your books
  10. Perhaps the drivers are not being 'awkward' at all and they have just had enough of all this, in the same way the passengers have. It is not the drivers' fault that First have put the fares up again. They have not had a pay rise from it, in the same way they didn't benefit after the last round of fare rises. Perhaps they are just wanting to get on with their work and not have every other passenger moaning to them about the fare increase, arguing with them about the fare increase and in some cases being abusive about it. Lots of people on here continually say that Stagecoach and TM Drivers are better/happier than First Drivers.... Even though many of them have driven for both companies. Maybe that is because at the moment Stagecoach /TM work social hours and have a collection of nicer routes. Come next month when they are shunted on to a few less desirable routes, and are still on the road at midnight, having hoodies throwing bricks through the windows, they may become less happy in their work. Perhaps the fares will increase to pay for the broken windows and unprofitable late night / weekend running and perhaps all you people who complain about First will start complaining about stagecoach/TM too. I'm not sure who you will complain to though about the extra cost incurred by travelling to and from work with different operators... happy days
  11. At least you'll be more prepared when you venture out - I think this morning caught a lot of people off-guard as it just looked like the ground was wet. Won't make that mistake again
  12. but some humans have a better nature than others. I can't believe how much I wanted her to find her car covered in grit, evil I know
  13. the guy on look north said tomorrow will be just as bad as today
  14. Hope all of those injured are ok. After taking a nasty fall myself I thoroughly symothise....and I was not carrying a heavy load at the time. I think there will be a high demand for long, hot baths tonight!!
  15. Think I have a similar inconsiderate neigbour. Some numpy woman from one end of my street decided to abandon her car at the other end of the street every afternoon/evening last week. Not sure why as road was clear enough to drive down. She carefully parked in the same place each day. 3 feet away from the curb (yes that's correct...right slap bang in the middle of the road) and level with the grit bin. 3 days running the council came to fill the bin and couldn't because she was totally blocking the road. In the end they managed to get the grit over the top of her car and in to the bin but I was secrectly hoping they would drop it all on to her car
  16. I have found it really odd the last few winters that people don't seem to clear the pavements outside their homes anymore. If they did it would really help for themselves and their neigbours but there doesn't seem to be any community spirit anymore. As long as people can get their cars off their drives they don't really care about anything else. The council should not need to grit pavements. What we need to do is get a good oldfashioned shovel and clear the show from the walkways outside our homes / business premises. Filling the grit bins only works if the public understand how to use the grit effectively and not just pile it up in heaps, on top of thick snow, it the middle of the road!!
  17. It certainly has been a nasty day. Mine started badly when I took one step out of my back door this morning and sliped.... falling down a set of steps head first. I am lucky I didn't break anything. The ice today has been far more dangerous than the snow last week. I was quite annoyed watching Look North tonight where everyone seemed to be just complaining about the gritting situation. I think that the gritters in sheffield have done a fantastic job recently. Afterall there are a limited number of workers/grit lorries to cover a big city and the snowfall has been persistent for 4 weeks now. There was no way at all that anyone could have known what would face us this morning and gritting the roads more last night would not have saved most of us from sliding on our own footpaths and the pavements. The forecasters say that black-ice will be an issue again tomorrow so please everybody take extra care from the minute you open your door in the morning..... and please, if you can, check on your elderly neigbours!
  18. You could try something that does not require bread or milk - there are people with gluten and dairy allergies who go an entire life bread/milk free. I think we can survive for a couple of days Treat yourself, have something flamboyant like a jacket potato
  19. Well said Neutral Body. Some people like to protest in the same way that some people like to join queues:D
  20. This looks like a case of being on the edge of the fare stage. If you got on above Bevan Way and asked for the Norfolk Arms then the fare should have been about £1.50. The next stop is in the next fare stage (about £2.40 maybe) so if you just asked for Grenoside that's where you will have been charged to. For the same fare you could have carried on right down to Deerlands Ave. Then coming back the £1.20 fair should only have taken you as far as the Acorn Pub I think. So if you just asked for Burncross Road it was a 50/50 whether you got charged up to or beyond the Acorn. Seems you were overcharged going out and undercharged going home. I think it should have been £1.50 each way or thereabouts. The way the fare stages work means that the price can almost double between 2 stops. Next time ask for the specific stop you want and check that the ticket is correct. You can always send the tickets in to the garage if you dispute them.
  21. Selfish but also quite amusing. What on earth is someone going to do with 20 loaves or 20 pints of milk? Personally I could quite happily go a month with neither of these things. As for the shopkeepers charging £2 a loaf that's very enterprising. Many people complaining yet still buying it. Nothing like a bit of good oldfashioned panic !!
  22. Surely if you're contract staff there are detials in your terms od employment about different types of leave. I work for a large orgaisiation and some people got to the office, others worked from home and some didn't manage to do either. It always makes me laugh when someone phones in and says they can't make it as the snow is sooooo deep where they live, then someone who lives on the same road arrives without a problem
  23. Of course they were right to stop running yesterday. SOME main roads were ok but others most definitely were not. When I left home yeterday morning at 7.20 the A61 between Leppings lane and Grenoside was white over and very nasty. That's a main road and a main bus route. The bus company has to consider many things. Passenger and driver safety, plus the safety of pedestrians and other drivers, along with potential damage to their own vehicles and other people's vehicles / property. I for one would not fancy a 12 ton bus hurtling towards me, my car, my home due to slippery road conditions. As for getting paid, why wouldn't they? If they turned in and were willing to work, sat out their shift at the depot waiting for the nod to get back out on the roads, then surely they are entitled to their days pay. It's not like it was a free day off at home with their feet up. Many drivers rely on public transport and had exactly the same issues getting to and from work as everyone else. The weather caused the managers of the bus companies to make a decision to call off services, the drivers should not be penalised for that.
  24. Perhaps the guy in the car next to you was a nutcase. How long had he already waited for you and how much longer was he prepared to wait? I'm all for a bit of community spirit but sitting round waiting in a carpark for a stranger to come back to their car is just wierd. I'd be more bothered about his motivations than those of the police.... afterall if he was so concerned, why not just ask them what they were doing (if they were there at all that is)
  25. Wow, did anyone else get woken up last night by the explosion on Penistone Road - the hand carwash opposite the Red Lion Pub? Looks like some idiots have blown up the lockup, at the back of the carwash forecourt. Not sure why, can't imagine there was anything of huge value in there
