I worked there and my great grandfather was Steel Manager who died at the gate house in 1893. Interested in the history and often visit but after 50 years I dont remember a lot. I do remember the great meals in the canteen. It seems photographs are a bit rare? I have one of the 5 ton hammer team. mike

  11. Interesting, he had at least five violins including a "small one which was easier to play with his little finger". Perhaps because he had a finger missing from his left hand. Two he made himself "appearance of being hand made" . His names is in two places. One he bought off Arthur Dyson. I am currently researching this victim.

  20. The RN always required a vast work force, (Yorkshire was on of the greatest sources, we are I think only 70 miles from sea! Visit the Maritime Museum) I have had 5 ancestors in the RN and this is probably not that unusual. http://www.sfbhistory.org.uk/Pages/SheffieldatWar/Page06/Page06c.html
  21. Hi Thanks for replies. I still have a problem, as illustrated below. Are we talking about the same place, across the road is Bingley House (Now a farm) This farm looks 19th c to me and I have no idea what was there before, Topside of the lane is Bingley farm with the tree problem although it is not now going to be demolished. "Revitt, Jonathan, Born Mar 06 1820 in Nether Gate, Stannington, Yorkshire, Died Jun 06 1896 in Bingley House, Stannington" (Tribal page.) There are Beals there(I reckon) in 1841 census, a cutler My Dyson references are "...farm on Bingley Lane" 1819 later stated "... a farm at Bingley House" mentioned 1835. So description inconclusive. I have a Mark and an earlier Charles Dyson (pre 1828, possibly pre 1800) Both cutlers and mentioned in connection with the "Bingley House Trust" - set up to educate the poor in the 17th c. Does anyone have any old pics please? Thanks mike
  22. Hi I have my gt gt gt grandfather George Dyson claiming relief here in 1819. "Farm on Bingley Lane" (Bradfield Archives) He was a cutler so there may have been a workshop here. Has anyone knowledge of one please? Thanks Mike
