  1. What does it say the DNS servers are? and the gateway and what IP has it picked up? Joel
  2. Its not got an IP address probably, Check that either the DHCP server on the router is enabled, or in Control panel -> Network connections choose your wireless adapter, right click, properties, and assign it an IP address (192.168.1.10 should work) with the gateway the IP of your router. Joel
  3. Businesses genrally get better contention. Most business ADSL/SDSL lines have 10:1 or 15:1 contention ratios. With leased lines like we have here, its more like 2:1, or even 1:1, hence why businesses pay more for their lines. Joel
  4. For home users, its genrally down to contention ratios. Off peak you usually have fewer people using it, so there are less demands on the network. At peak taimes there are more people using it, so there are more network demands. Think of it as a motorway. When the motorway is empty, you can get on and get where your going reasonably quickly. At rush hour however, you genrally have to queue in traffic so you get slowed down. Joel
  5. I personally feel that for customer facing work, or where you meet the public, tattoos are innapropriate. Other than that I dont really care, although out of a sence of my own personal smartness, I wouldn't have a tattoo that isn't covered by at least a short sleved shirt. Joel
  6. I know what you mean, they came with cornflakes and other serials for years as a kid. Joel

  9. I'm not fussed, I would just rather people had valid arguments that resolve to more than "Its crap". Joel

  11. If you dont mind a small cost, I can sort you out hosting + domain, with phpbb2 for £20 a year. Joel
  12. I was merely extracting the urine from your stereotypes as you pointed out stereotypes are common misconceptions, and as for my inept Kernel, its not as in..... Stop 0x0000000A IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Joel
  13. Possibly, but also due to its nature its all free, so many people contribute spare hours of their time to documenting things, not just for specific things, but also for problems they have encountered, or that they have found how to fix. Not only that, Developers and OSS supporters want more people to use it, so by writing documentation, it can make the transition to Linux/BSD easier for people new to it. Joel
  14. I'm not tarring anyone with any brush, I'm just talking in general terms and making a point, because genrally Linux newbies dont bother, and i'm sure Windows mailing lists have the same problems as well. There are far more resources on the net for Linux than Windows. Joel
  15. *Cough* Where did Microsoft steal the GUI idea from, they sure didn't think of it themselves *cough* Linux can be run without a GUI for a server, or with one for a desktop. Where as you get GUI's on desktop and server with Windows, and you have to buy two separate products. Joel
  16. Its not really a tyrade against arrogance, more a tyrade against Linux users. I can imagine your one of these people that I regularly read posting to mailing lists. Usually with content like this: I see these endless types of posts to mailing lists. Not only does it annoy people that there is no explanation, no detail. These people also genrenrally dont bother to search google, and genrally post to the wrong mailing list. The LKML must get at least 20-30 of these a day. Despite when signing up you get told the purpose of the list is not support. You wonder why some of them get arrogant when people cannot seem to think for themselves, or are incapable of reading the manual, or searching google. Would you be fine if people kept asking you questions that they could get from the book sat on their desk. I think not. Games are getting to the point where developers are writing versions for Linux, every unreal game made works on Linux, I belive Doom 3 does also. Plus genrally, most of the servers hosting the online games are Linux. SLI works fine on Linux with the NVIDIA drivers. There is nothing wrong with the Linux Kernel either, Just because it doesn't support some obscure piece of hardware does not mean its crap. Joel
  17. Linux is crap isnt really an argument. Its different in the way it works to windows methods, and I think thats what people dont understand. Most people try it for two days, get frustrated that they can't do something, and give up. Then instantly it makes it crap, because something didn't work. I work, and am qualified in both Windows and UNIX systems, and I think windows has some good features, and even better ideas, but they seem to just boil down to nothing, windows does not scale very well for example, hence why many many places still use Novell systems, despite Microsoft claiming it can. If it wern't for UNIX/Linux windows would probably cost three times as much with the stranglehold that m$ would have on the market. Plus I bet it wouldn't have much in the way of features, ideas that originally appeared on UNIX based systems. If we are stereotyping, Windows fanboys like yourself tend to: 1) Be overweight 2) Drive girly cars 3) Are so closed to anything that might harm their precious M$ software, and sleep with MSDN CD's under their pillow. 4) Wear sharp suits and look like managment, when they are a lowly techie 5) Have a bizzare fasination with being "in control" 6) Are just lazy, and don't like things that make them have to think, or might tax their brain Yeh, there are those who use Linux to make themselves look good, but there are many many more who use it because they like it, and it does what they want. If UNIX had not have be made, We'd be about 40 years behind where we are not. Its all down to what you want to use. Its choice. If you dont like it, dont use it. If you do want to use it, then be sensible, RTFM, google, mailing lists, forums. Beats paying a fortune for M$ support calls. Don't expect people to solve your problems for you, If we all did that, you'd never learn Joel
  18. I've not used Windows properly in years, I use it at work for system testing, and because I have a worldwide Active Directory domain to look after, but I just use FreeBSD with kerberos for Active Directory login. I only really use Linux for certain applications that I need, such as Zend. I have no need for Windows at all. Its not bragging rights, its just that it works for me. Its by no means difficult to learn. Gentoo have addressed a large chunk of documentation. It tends to take a lot from BSD in the managment of its distribution, with a comprihensive handbook. Linux takes pacience. Not forgetting Linux is only the Kernel, its actually GNU/Linux. Joel
  19. How about highligting all the text and changing the font? Joel
  20. My pet hate about Linux is the amount of bickkering within the community. Get your act together and refocus. Part of the reason I switched to FreeBSD was this. One of the other major annoynace factor is that there isn't really a single repository for documents. FreeBSD has the Handbook, contains most of what you need in one place, whereas Linux documentation seems to be allover the place. Joel
  21. Tables should only be used for tabulated data, and not layout. Unfortunatly a lot of people still dont get this. Most of the reasons for browsers being the way they are, are down to the developers. IE allows you to miss tags, use incorrect syntax. If it didn't, it would force developers to create better sites, and also have the knock on effect of forcing the browser developers to create browsers that comply properly with web standards. The more people that adhere to the HTML guidlines, the more likeley it is that vendors will be forced to make their browsers work properly. Joel
  22. Depends how big the nest is? If its small enough, just tape a binbag round it and leave it for a few days. If its not a nest, incence often does the trick. Joel
  23. You mean bodging. HTML standards are there for a reason. HTML standards are there to help developers create sensible, and compatiable HTML. If everyone bothered to code proper compliant HTML, it would make life easier for everyone, and also have the side effect of forcing browser developers to create browsers that also adhered to standards, rather than having people make up their own, and then only work in certain browsers on certain platforms. The whole point of having these standards is so that everyone, regardless of OS/Browser can see the same site in any browser on any platform. It also makes web developers lives easier, so they dont have to code the same thing twice, or create "workarounds" which are in themselves often bodge jobs. Joel
  24. Dale Carnegie books are very good. They are more related to business but, they teach things like assertivness and self confidence. They also cover motivation and business type skills, which although might not seem relevant, but they can be applied to other situations too. You can even do a evening course with the Dale Carnegie Foundation. Joel
