  1. Just hope it's not going to be something along the lines of...someone goes out fully prepared with shovel and snow chains, is stopped from driving by someone else blocking the road who wasn't so well prepared. Whilst the road was blocked the kind and sensible person stopped out of the way on a pile of snow to help those less well prepared, and clear a way for himself. During that time the traffic warden sneaked round the corner and gave him a ticket.
  2. Just wondering if anyone knows if they have to be stuck to the car? Was stopped in a safe place yesterday just of Crookesmoor Rd whilst trying to help other drivers get through the snow. Came back to my car and saw a warden noting down the Reg No. She ran off as soon as I came near and didn't get a ticket on the car.
  3. That's the reason about half of them will soon lose their jobs. The attitude to consumers all the way through the royal mail and the post office network stinks.
  4. Don't think there were any 'victims' of this crime. They have even made a retrospective change to the US law which used to say that someone had to damage a system to be accused of hacking because they couldn't prove he had done any damage. Seems to me he did them a favour and highlighted a pretty serious lack of security. He even left his e-mail address so it would be easy for them to contact him. Hardly the act of criminal.
  5. Totally agree with this. What makes it worse is that this crime was committed in the UK. Just like the NatWest 3 the US have no proper jurisdiction to prosecute. The extradition treaty is also unilateral and was originally designed for the extradition of TERRORISTS!! Why does it not surprise me that the government is misusing anti-terror legislation. They wonder why we don't all want to be on a database!
  6. Hope that's not aimed at me Donkey. I believe I was making a balanced argument on the basis of time taken and cost to get the train. I've walked to work for the last three years so I reckon I'm in credit for a few journeys.
  7. I've got an interview in Leicester on Monday so depending on the result I might have to commute it/move. Looked into the train and it's about an hour journey + getting to and from the station and £3200/yr for a season ticket. Not sure how much the petrol would be but the time taken in good traffic is 1-1.5 hours. Used to work in Loughborough and the Friday traffic on the M1 north in terrible. Could take up to 3-4hrs to get back to Shef.
  8. That's the point. I'm not the PM so I shouldn't be the one deciding on what course of action the country should take. Nor am I seeking to be elected to office. The achievement is, I guess, a better place for us all to live in. I know this could be different for everyone but I'm saying I reckon there's no point complaining about something unless your prepared to come up with a solution or at least try to make it better. So how would you make it better, realistically? How would you fight the recession, or at least create jobs whilst cutting the deficit and solving the energy crisis. So I guess we have form another thread on SF that a cyclone thinks new type of nuclear technology is the way forward on the energy front. So yeah the backing British thing if you like. Supporting local shops, but more than that.. What can you do to make your street, your city or your country a better place to live in. For instance I helped someone reach a product on the top shelf in the supermarket yesterday. A small thing I grant you but a start.
  9. If there's legionella in there I doubt very much that 65C would kill it. Most bacteria can survive heating to much higher temps for sustained periods. A sealed system shouldn't allow for growth, and in any case you'd have to aerosolise the bacterium to make in infectious. The recommended maximum for domestic hot water is 55 to prevent scalding.
  10. Space and water heating are the big costs but surely it shouldn't take that much heating. If it's properly insulated then you shouldn't need the heating on all the time even if someone is in. Plus given that I guess you have gas heating there is no way the electric should be so much unless you leave every light on 24-7. You should check your loft for the recommended depth of insulation (270mm I think) its only about £20 a roll and prob would save you a bundle.
  11. I know this is a bit naive but, given that we all more or less agree that the country is going to be in a bit of a mess for at least a few years. (Unemployment rising, huge national debt, a minefield of constitutional ****-ups in Scotland and the Lords, energy gap, massive infringement of civil liberties, overcrowding.. etc) What can we do about it? Wasn't this supposed to be Blairs job. To sort everything out?? I know several people who have moved abroad to USA, Switzerland, Canada, Australia etc because they can't stand it here, but I'd like to be able to say 10 years time that I contributed to a greater good that I helped to make Britain better. Enough of the moaning and the gloom what can we each individually do?
  12. What a ridiculous set of demands. When will you lot stop dragging the good name of universities in Sheffield through the mud. I am fed up of a minority of students forcing their views on everyone else. What do you honestly expect the university to do about it?
  13. If you know Rivelin you'd know they're always there or just near the park. It's a well known location. If it's a camera it'll be the camera partnership not the police so literally they have nothing else they are paid to do!! I got caught by the Derbyshire lot so gotta say I have some sympathy, but sounds like its a fair cop guvna.
  14. Best reason to have one is that the tax man will automatically take 40% of your beneficiary's inheritance without it.
  15. Think 12mm is now too thin. It's in the building regs as 18mm for joists no more than 400mm apart 22mm for 600mm spaced joists. For a bathroom you'll want a water resistant chipboard. What I did was to put a water proof cement based board called hardibacker over the chipboard so that the joints of each layer were at 90degrees to each other (if that makes sense).
  16. Where the cyclist is in a cycle lane the right of way is with the cyclist regardless of whether the driver has been signalling!! A cycle lane is a separate lane of traffic just like a bus lane or the inside lane of a dual carriage way. The main reason why cyclists hit cars turning left is that the car driver hasn't bothered to look.
  17. Didn't know that they were merging Hillsborough and Brightside. Is this some effort to shore up the labour vote in Hillsborough after the increase in middleclasses moving in to the area? Can't say I'll be sorry to see Angela Smith go in Hillsborough. Never once replied to my letters and she has a voting record which couldn't be more loyal to GB and his shower: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/angela_smith/sheffield%2C_hillsborough
  18. Feel sorry for you Kamble, Had a few near misses on Brocco Bank with idiot mothers in 4x4s driving over cycle lanes without looking to park on double yellows. So much so that I stopped cycling. I find you really have to have eyes in the back of your head. A good way of making them aware of your presence in traffic is to give the cars a bang with your fist. They keep an eye on you after that.
  19. When I worked for Halfords as lad that's what they told us as part of a training on car cleaning products. To be honest never really asked why at the time but in any case you'll probably find drop for drop fairy is more expensive than a basic car cleaner with added wax and no degreasers. FYI if you were thinking of using windowlene or similar to clean the car windows don't. Not sure why but I think somehting to do with the coating in it, makes it really hard to de-mist your windows. The missus didn't listen to me when I told her this the first time I let her wash her car unsupervised and now wishes she had. The proper cleaner was in the cupboard and everything.
  20. Rule 174 of the highway code: Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see 'Road markings'). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping. [Law TSRGD regs 10(1) & 29(2)] But yeah if the right exit is not clear after the box (cos the light sequences are out) then you shouldn't enter. Sorry perhaps I didn't make that clear, I was just answering the question of if you can wait in a junction which you can on a right turn.
  21. I've been done at Tideswell moor by a mobile van. Definately don't flash but if you look carefully you can see the shutter close and open again. The traffic light cameras also record speed but will only fine you for the traffic light offence usually. My gf got caught by one on Brightside lane just near the bridge (turning red as she went though) got her for the light but recorded her speed too.
  22. Don't use snake!!! especially from that end of town. I live in Hillsborough and go left at Ladybower to go through Winnats pass. From Eccleshall Rd turn up Greystones Rd opposite Summerfield and turn left at the top to go through Ringinglow (much quicker than the main road especially in traffic). Then follow the road through from Hathersage to Castleton. At the top of the pass take a right to join the A6 at Chapel-en-le-Frith. The route from there depends on the area of Manc you're heading for but: You can use the A6 but it is slow-slow-stop at rush hour. By far the quickest route into manchester (although not ideal from Shef) is the A34 through Bramhall/Didsbury way. Personally I prefer to go through Kettleshulme, Pot Shrigley and Bollington but the route from turning a sharp left at the Rising Sun in Hazel Grove and then turning right at the lights on the A523 to join the A5143 to connect to the A5149 via Carr Wood Rd is normally not too bad. That way you can join the A34 at Cheadle Royal (near John Lewis) by turning right at the lights at the end of Turves Rd if memory serves. To be honest the only way to avoid traffic is taking the back roads which takes a bit of finding your way around. The train through Dore and the Hope valley doesn't take long and driving or parking in the centre of Manc is a nightmare.
