I've seen your 'disgust' stare Peter. Rather often. I wonder why...?Â
When I catch up with you later once I have been in, as you say, cheaply produced cr@p you get in most bars in Sheffield I shall give you my stare
-
No 'barflies' standing/seating in front of the pumps either. I'm looking at you Rutland.Â
That does annoy me when people stand round the hand pumps when there is plenty of seats, I make a point of trying to look through them to see the pumps and give them my "disgust" stare at them, my "disgust stare" gets worse when I drink more.
-
And the ability to keep the boards up to date as they positioned them OVER THE ****ING STAIRS!Â
Why no-one has DigitalPour in this area I'll never know. It's a wonderful thing.
Â
You would be the ideal person to do a interview with on "What do you think to Sheffield pubs" I would get the truth
-
Well I'm going to revisit town centre tomorrow. Going to give Dev Cat another chance... plus Bath, Brewdog... Tho not sure where else. As I find them all a bit insipid now. But if you're around I will see you.Â
I am out tomorrow night and chances are probably see you are I am around that area as well.
Â
I keep giving Dev Cat another chance but still cannot get used to the ale pumps scattered around the bar.
-
I walk past these most days and they do look a mess.... not sure why they are still standing unless they are a listed building, not even sure who has them now.
Â
Another pubs just up the road .. The Blue Bell (I think that's the name )closed a while ago (Cricket Inn tram stop) and seems to be converted and ready to be a shop, wont be a pub again. The Wybourn across the road I am sure I saw a "for sale" sign
-
I'd love to agree with you Jemmo, I really would. But the failure of places like The Hop, Dada, Anchorage etc, and the dumbing down of places like Sheffield tap (you only have to walk into Tapped Leeds to appreciate the vastly superior rage of beer they have to Sheffield) does suggest otherwise. Whether it is a money issue, I'm not so sure. I really do think it's a Sheffield mindset that people simply won't aren't happy paying £6 a pint for beer. Hell I've paid that for a THIRD before! Thought not in Sheffield obviously...Â
I am going to have to agree with you here about the price, I don't think Sheffield people will pay it or be ripped off (keg prices as a suggestion)... maybe it is lack of disposable income as well (sitting on the fence).
Â
I don't think Hop advertised themselves well as a ale pub, maybe with it near Revolution/that pub across road doing cocktails people think they didn't do ales. I don't think the location was a good one.
Â
I was out Tuesday/Wednesday round town and most pubs were Division St area and HoS area and was surprised how may of the pubs were empty, only full ones were those doing food (Bungs and Bear etc etc).
Â
Or maybe we have so much choice in pubs with ales that they seem empty as everyone is in other pubs.
Â
I don't think we will ever know the answer, but we all can speculate
Â
To be fair, Pete, your average pub crawl covers half the city anyway! Us lesser mortals get left in gutters at various points around the route...Â
Yes they do tend to go on for miles and miles, although I did a interesting walk on Tuesday round town in pubs I wouldn't normally go in all the time and didn't go in pubs I would go in all the time, was interesting to see what ales they had ...

Last Saturday I did what I now consider to be the best run in Sheffield - Ruttie, Sentinel, Beer Engine, Cremorne, Picture House Social, Broadfield and Hop Hideout. And it was admittedly great fun. However, it does seem a shame that you have to travel that far to get that variety of pubs.
Â
I am finding that the best pubs are now out of Sheffield town centre.
Â
I seem to prefer Crookes/Broomhill/Walkley and I have done the above as well with adding in Heeley.

twitter says
Â
Open Wednesday 5pm-late Thursday-Sunday 12-late
Â
not sure what happens on a Monday and Tuesday

Must say Bath have some great stuff on, went again for my 2nd visit last night.
Â
Hallamshire was a bit disappointing as the ones I wanted to try were not on as they had rotating keg lines and where they had the outside bar was a bit of a obstacle if you are tall and had a few and could end up falling over, thankfully I didnt fall over.
Â
Off to Greystones today, I need a hair of the dog and a large bacon and egg sandwich.
-
I know. I certainly won't be moving on too early. And I expect the Bath to be rammed if they have taken up half the seating room again. But definitely want to get to the Hallamshire at some point.Â
Bath has limited seating room at the moment and was lucky to get a seat last night, some were standing and it wasn't busy.
-
We shall see you in Greystones on Saturday afternoon. I expect to be there from about 2ish. I have seen a pic of the setup in the Backroom - looks great. Am, planning to get a taxi from there to the Hallamshire at some point. That point being largely dependent on how many beers I want in the Greystones. The list looks pretty good.Â
Greystones list does look very good, I cannot see me moving from there for many hours.
-
LOL at one with the beard! I also have a beard and will be with at least two other guys who also have beards. Oh, and probably also SpiderPete, if you know him.Â
I shall point out jemson to you on Saturday
Â
I was at Bath Hotel last night and the
Â
Southern Star - White Mocha Porter - 5.9% . . . Pint £4.50 Half £2.50
Â
was bloomin lovely.
Â
Off to Hallamshire tonight after work and then Greystones on Saturday, which might be a stagger down the hill.
-
well, there's a clue in that Lurgh Mor witnessed it, I've only ever seen him Lurgh-ing in one pubÂ
I wonder if it the same pub I always see you in, if you seen him in it, could be the same one.
-
I wonder which pub it was ... not one to gossip ...
Â
why would they contact CAMRA ... must be a proper real ale pub to complain ... or maybe a pub that is rated highly by CAMRA ...
-
What are your favourites and why?Â
Just about sorted our Top10 for 2016, and it`s a little different to CAMRA`s....
Â
Well my Top10 were completely different to CAMRA, which is a good thing, their Top2 didn't make my Top10.
Â
1. Dev Cat - this was BEFORE the re-furb, I am still not liking the new look, the bar isn't what I expected and the ale pumps scattered is my worst nightmare, I am back in again tonight. They did a great job this year but the re-furb - have they turned it into a cocktail bar now ?? Wont be my No1 in 2017
Â
2. Shakespeare - nothing ever changes in here, same seats, barrels, tables, which I like, ales are just great as always and I am sure its up there in 2017.
Â
3. Sheffield Tap - just a great pub.
Â
I cannot think what your No1 will be but I bet the Top10 includes Beer Engine, White Lion, Bath Hotel.
-
Saw the sign for this in the toilet last Saturday. Nowhere else in the pub. Two others I was talking to hadn't heard anything about it. Therefore I'm sure the pub will be glad of you promoting this, Dave, as they are seemingly incapable of doing so themselves!Â
I did see it on Facebook but only after you mentioned it when you went to the looo.
Â
Nothing on Twitter but nothing on their account for ages.
Â
I might pop to the loo tonight and post it onTwitter.
-
Must say some great beers on last night, the Noa Pecan Mud Cake Stout was especially nice and DIPA V9
-
I shall be popping in tonight after my Heeley pub crawl
-
I am not surprised it has closed, I go past it everyday and it never looked full and the clientele will all probably go to Hen & Chickens now.
Â
The sign has been up for months as well.
-
Yes I shall be popping in Friday, I did see a glimpse of the building the other day
-
on twitter the grand re-opening is 28th October, 10 real ales, all Stancill no doubt
-
I am going later this afternoon before beer festival.
Â
If it is Neepsend pub I am expecting it to look like Black and Sheaf View.
Â
I shall post comments via Untppd when I have one of their guest ales
-
Keg beer list now publishedÂ
Nice list, I think I shall be hanging round there a bit.
Â

-

See if there is anything you fancy trying...
Â

Â

But you cannot improve it that much apart from the ales, which probably have less Blue Bee, it isn't that big and space is a problem, people sit round the bar and make it difficult to what's on. Its smaller than Shakespeare so will never be on the same level.

Â
Roebuck is crying out to be taken over, this pub could have a lot of potential, I was in there this week and half pumps empty, the place was empty and its in a area for a pub walk/stagger. I can see this pub in a short while closing, which will be a shame.
