  1. Might I suggest http://www.rootschat.com it's another site which is very similar to http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk. If you go to the West Yorkshire section you may find lots of people you already know and also get as much help with family research. I'm sorry to lose SH but until such times as something is done about it I must just accept it's loss and try to replace it. This seems like a good second best and who knows it may turn out to be even better. Grannypat
  2. Thanks everyone. I shall just have to keep my fingers crossed that we will all be able to access the site before too long. Grannypat
  3. Hi Voldy, I just feel I need to explain my current situation with regard to http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk. I cannot access the site at all via my usual browser Google chrome. However, if I use Internet Explorer I CAN access the site but I CANNOT participate in any way. I CAN'T reply to an existing post, start a new thread or even send a message to a member or site administrator. In other words it's a total waste of time going on to it which is very frustrating as I have existing threads which I need to be able to participate in questions and answers to. Surely there's someone out there who can HELP?????????? Grannypat
  4. Hi Voldy, Yes, my emails came back too - a few days after they were initially sent though. I am at a complete loss. I was wondering Bazjea if you could share the link that was sent to you so that we could all find out how to access the site. Unless the question you asked was not regarding this? Could I please ask anyone who is still able to access the http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk site if they could contact the administrators of the site and ask them if anything is being done about this problem or if they can suggest anything to those of us who want to have access but are unable to. Perhaps one of them could post something here to try to explain things to us? Grannypat
  5. Is there anyone whose family lived near the bottom of Cemetery Road back in the 1920s and 1930s? I have a particularly difficult knot in a branch of my family tree and am hoping that someone with connections from that area back then might hold the key. (Can you undo a knot with a key???) Anyway, I have family who lived on Beeley Street and also a Cemetery Road address and would love to see if anyone might have an insight into the area from that time. Grannypat
  6. I have just logged on to Sheffield History site via Internet Explorer (still can't do it using Google Chrome). The only problem I have now is that I can't post anything. I tried posting on an existing topic and also putting on a new topic. It just won't let me do it somehow. I can read messages and get around the site but that's all. Grrrrrrr! Grannypat
  7. Right got it sorted. You have to use a different browser. I use Google Chrome as a rule but just had a go on Internet Explorer and I'm in. I haven't a clue why this should be the case but at least we can access the site now and perhaps things will change sometime in the future. Grannypat
  8. I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if there might be anyone out there who knew where Back 7 Cemetery Road might have been? I am trying to solve knot in a branch of my family tree and I have an ancestor (husband of an ancestor) who lived there back in the 1930s and perhaps even later. He was a gardener and I think moved nearer to Sharrow Vale Road area in later life. His name was Charles Oliver Parker. This is another long shot but I remember someone called Olive Eggington being talked about a lot when I was little and I think she lived near the bottom of Cemetery Road. Does anyone know this lady? I think she was a friend of my mums. Grannypat
  9. I've just done that and I still can't get on to SH. I logged off and then back on but it still hasn't worked. Any other ideas that I can try? I have sent Sheffield History an email via an old email they sent me in my deleted box, to tell them what has happened. Haven't heard back yet but it's early days I suppose and I can't expect instant action just for little ol' me. It's so frustrating though, isn't it? Grannypat
  10. I have been a member for some years now and have had east access over the last few weeks but today I cannot get on. It says Not Acceptable. Really annoying as I was in conversations re some searches I was doing. Grannypat
  11. Hi, I have just had a reply from Sheffield History about the problem. - "Hello, Yes there definitely seems to be a registration problem, we are getting no answers and neither are the SF members. Steve." So at least we know that they know about it so perhaps they will try to get it sorted out before too long. Grannypat
  12. http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk seems to be working again now. I've been on a few times over recent days. I was already a member though. Mind you having said that I did send a question to the administrators of the site and have never received a reply. It's a really good site hope it can be sorted out. Grannypat
  13. I am posting this in the hope that I may save some of you some money. I had a relative who was in Middlewood Hospital from 1938 until she died in 1994. I jumped through all the hoops required of me to be able to access her medical case file. You have to go through Sheffield Archives for them to do the search on your behalf. The whole thing took over 2 months and cost me £40.50 and all I have found out is that her condition was congenital. They tell me her case file has not survived. There was no mention of this being a possibility when I applied. I assumed that the records were all intact - especially for someone who spent almost her entire life there. So if you are looking for similar information be aware that you could be just throwing your money away for nothing. I do think that a warning should be given that some records are missing for whatever reason. Good luck. Grannypat
  14. Hi Mick, I do remember a character to who made us laugh a lot, Jimmy Elwes. How about Lois Lambert, Linda Hall, Christine Dawson, Susan Mullins, Raymond Price, Tony Marsh, Margaret Siddall, Glyn Prout, Linda Carnell, Hazel Dutton and Susan Weightman. There were Carol and David Whiting (not sure of the surname but they lived at The Vine I think) Sorry hillsbro but I don't know any of the names you listed. They must have been a different age group to me. Grannypat
  15. I am trying to find my grandfather. He lived on Beeley Street between 1914 and 1930. He was mechanical engineer and I think it possible that he might have worked at James Neil & Co on Cemetery Road or Twist Drill during that time. Is there anyone out there who might hold a clue that I could follow and perhaps trace him. He was not married to my gran and so I have no idea of his age at that time or where he might have been born. Nor can I find a possible death for him without some clue. I have hit a brick wall with this. Any help would be very much appreciated. Grannypat ---------- Post added 30-10-2015 at 13:34 ---------- Forgot to mention that his name was Edward Stevenson. Does this ring a distant bell in your memories of someone who might have been spoken about by your gran or grandad perhaps. Someone who might have gone to St. Matthias school and who might have known friends whose surname was Stevenson? Did you know someone who lived on Beeley Street during this time or perhaps in the early 1930s? Anything at all even if you're not really certain of your facts. It might just give me a link. Please. :0) Grannypat
  16. Hi Mick, Yes, I remember you. I even went out with you for a while in infant school. Didn't we make contact on Friends Reunited a year or two ago. Strange how so few people seem to use that site now, me included. Ah, wait a minute, I seem to recall me asking you if you remembered my gran who lived across the road from you in the back to back houses. I have been doing my family tree, along with everyone else in the world it would seem. Anyway, I have found out that quite a few members of my family lived along Hodgson Street back in the 1800s. Those are the kind of details that I love to find out. Anyway, I shall go back onto Friends Reunited and see what you told me before. Getting on now and don't seem to hold onto things in my memory for very long. Except of course for the long ago details. They're still clear as crystal in my mind. Hey ho! Grannypat
  17. The census for the period my relative was in Middlewood won't be released for at least another 20 years, so that idea won't work in this instance but thanks for trying. I have now heard back from Sheffield Archives and I have to fill in forms and jump through quite a lot of hoops to request this info and there is no guarantee that they will be released even then. Looks like I shall have to bite the bullet and just do it. Thanks anyway for all your help. Grannypat
  18. Hi Victormh, I have tried to find John Grantham in various ways but can't. To contact him via this site I need to know his user name. He's not on FB as far as I can tell and I even tried Friends Reunited but nothing. Check the Sheffield phone book but if he's there he must be ex-directory. Is there anyone out there who knows him????? Grannypat
  19. It would seem that this opinion is unanimous. I haven't found anyone who is pleased with this new format. I was not impressed with Jerry Hall last night. She did nothing but smile and laugh. Her interest seemed quite superficial. However, it has got time to improve yet. I live in hope. Grannypat
  20. I did my best to contact my cousin as we were very close as kids but it would seem that he doesn't want to renew the connection. I found someone who played golf with him occasionally at tournaments and he was going to try to pass my telephone number on the next time they met. However, my cousin wasn't playing that day and so he passed the message on to a chap who he knew was a friend of my cousin. I never got a phone call. I looked online and found an address for someone who I felt was my cousin and sent a Christmas card with my details so that he could email, write or telephone. Nothing. I've decided that not everyone wants to renew old friendships. I find that really sad but it's a free world and we're all different aren't we? Grannypat
  21. I am wanting to find out some information regarding a relative who seems to have been in Middlewood Hospital from approx 1932 until her death in 1994. Do any of you know how I can get access to her records? I have sent an email to Sheffield Archives and they have sent me an email saying that someone will answer my question within the next 28 days. That's a long time to wait if you then have to go through another long process of submitting your request and then I though of SF. Grannypat
  22. Hi Rob532, I shall follow that up. Thank you for that. Grannypat
  23. Hi bullerboY, Did he have a brother named Gordon who was older? Don't suppose you know what happened to him or where he might be living now? With a name like Jones there are so many options that I really could do with narrowing the search down a bit. Who did he marry - that would help. Grannypat
  24. It's amazing how quickly these posts can go from the first page to the third. Anyway, still stuck on this branch of my family tree and hoping I can find Allan Jones who may know something which will unravel the whole problem for me. So if you think you might know him please do get in touch. Grannypat
