  1. I tried to send you a PM but it says you can't receive messages. Is that right? Grannypat
  2. Another site which I have always found very helpful is www.rootschat.com The people on there are always willing to offer advice and in some cases will go out of their way to help you search. I think that you will find that researching your family tree will become addictive. One word of caution though - you MUST get certificates. Not for everyone and everything but for strategic ones as it is very very easy to go off on a tangeant and find that you lose YOUR thread altogether and then you continue researching the wrong family altogether. The sad thing is that you wouldn't realise that that's what you've done. Also if you find someone else is researching the same branch as you do not just accept their research as valid without checking it first. For instance on Ancestry Public Members Trees I have found quite a few trees over the years which have the wrong information on them. So get certificates and check other peoples research info. I hope that you enjoy doing this but I'm sure that you will. Grannypat
  3. I think I'm a few years before you. I worked at the Co-op from 1962 to 1967 ish. This is probably why I don't remember you. Did you know Hazel Walch? I had an uncle who worked at the Co-op funeral department. Ask your father in law if he remembers Alwyn Stevenson? Also my mum worked at Hoffmans on the pumps for a while back in the late 50s early 60s. The Continental was probably not exactly across from The Locarno but there was a bit of waste ground by the side of it. There was a sort of step across the inside of the window where people used to sit and it was known as the Continental shelf. I'm wondering if it had a change of ownership and changed it's name after I moved out of the area. Grannypat
  4. Is there anyone out there who has family connections to Beeley Street? My mum and his brothers and sister grew up on that street and lived there until the early 1930s. They all went to St. Mathias school. I know that it's a long time ago but someone's grandparents must have lived there. I would like to find out as much as I can about the people who lived there and what life was like then. I shall keep my fingers crossed so please reply asap. 😄 Grannypat
  5. If you go to www.192.com and enter his name there is one person showing up on electoral rolls 2014-2016 (I don't think the up to date ones are available yet). There is a cost involved but it isn't very much. I hope that this helps. Grannypat
  6. I think the best you could do would be to take a DNA test on either Ancestry or Find My Past. That will throw up people your husband is related to as long as they too have taken a test but even if they haven't you would find enough people to be able to try to work it out. Good luck.
  7. Is there anyone out there who attended St. Silas C of E school between 1951 and 1956? I know it's a long time ago but I would love to know what happened to you all. I know that some are sadly no longer with us but it would be great to have a catch up with those who are. Lets see how many we can find. Grannypat
  8. When I was growing up in the 1950s we had a neighbour called Clem (I won't post his surname here) and he never seemed to go out to work. He would spend most of his day stood on his doorstep, leaning against the door jamb, and just watching the world go by. So when my mum used to say not to stand there like Clem I always assumed she was referring to him. Reading the posts on here it would seem I was wrong. Grannypat
  9. Thank you gene that's worth knowing. It always costs me £9.25 every time and I, like you, have absolutely loads of them and all at that price. Wish I had known before. I haven't seen where it gave me an option. Anyway, thanks again.
  10. Thank you Runningman. I have pm you my email address.
  11. Hi biscotti, Yes I am already member of FB and also of Pictures of Sheffield & Derbyshire. The thing is that I did ask one of the people, who seemed to post lots of photos of the park, if he would be kind enough to take a photo for me. He said that of course he would. This was in the spring. I mentioned it to him again in late summer but so far nothing and I don't like to mention it again. This seemed like another way round it. Autumn is disappearing fast along with the colours. Sigh! Grannypat
  12. Is there anyone out there who has a nice photograph of the stepping stones in Endcliffe Park with the trees around them in their Autumn colours? I now live in Dorset and have done for some time so cannot take my own photo. The stones and the park hold a special place in my heart and played quite a big part in my childhood. I am wanting to do a painting for myself but need a photograph to work from. I have my fingers crossed. Grannypat
  13. It was so strange when I saw your first post as I am researching family members who emigrated to Australia around the 1965/6 time. I think their destination was Queensland. It is such a small world now isn't it? Grannypat
  14. Oh shame. Never mind. What was the reason you posted this in the first place? Are you trying to reconnect with family and friends here? I found it very interesting although I'm sure that I do not know you. Grannypat
  15. Hey Downsunder we need the rest of the story. I was really getting into it. Grannypat
  16. Old tup I have sent you a PM. Grannypat
  17. Hi Hillsbro, Thanks for that. You are always so dependable. The thing is that I was hoping to find someone who is actually in the family and who might know the kind of facts which you can't find on the internet. If only someone had a time machine so that I could go back to the 1920s and find everything out, that I need to know, for myself. Hey-ho! Grannypat
  18. I am trying to sort out a knot in my family tree. Is there anyone out there who had an Edward Foster Stephenson in their family? He lived with his wife Annie and his son Edward Arnold Stephenson in Tullibardine Road, Ecclesall. He was born in 1864 and died in 1931. He worked as a silversmith and/or silver journeyman. I have tried all the regular sites which I usually use but am finding out that it is much harder to find things out for the 19 century because of the 100 year privacy laws. So, I thought that I would give Sheffield Forum a whirl. I find the people on here are so helpful whatever or whoever you're looking for. Grannypat
  19. Ho that's a coincidence isn't it. However, I'm looking for Stevensons with a connection to Beeley Street back between 1913 and 1931. A Stevenson being there say in the 1970 I wouldn't be able to link to without finding out information about the previous family. Thanks for thinking of it though. Grannypat
  20. Oh right, only_me, that's alright then. That is after my time. I thought it would be strange for me not to know about it if it had been there at the same time that I was. You've set my mind at rest that I am not losing the plot after all. Thank you.
  21. I was just browsing online and looking up where a road was as I just couldn't place it, when I found a streetmap. As I was searching for the street I noticed Mount Pleasant Park. How long has that been there? I never noticed it during the 48 years I lived in that area. Don't tell me it was there all the time and I missed it. Grannypat
  22. Does anyone have any connection to Beeley Street (off the bottom of Cemetery Road) back between 1913 and 1931? Do you have an ancestor who lived on this street? I have a very complicated knot in one of the branches of my family tree which I would love to try to unpick. Any help would be gratefully received. The family I'm trying to find something out about was named Stevenson and there were four children who all attended St. Matthias during these years.
