  1. The old Liberal Party was re-established by members who didin't like Orange takeover, and since the LibDems went into government coalition in 2010 election they have been gaining support. They have more councillors that the LibDems in Ryedale and are the main Council Opposition Group. Last year in Liverpool (which used to be run by the LibDems) they had more candidates up for election than the LibDems managed. Sheffield had a Liberal councillor in 2000-2001 who left the LibDems (but I think realistically he was kicked out). They were featured on a "small parties" feature on the BBC a few days ago and have four general election candidates this year. If your left wing but don't like socialist or green authoritarianism they are an option.
  2. The deadline to register to vote for the 7th May 2015 elections is 20th April. See this website here: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  3. Shaun Wright used to be Chair of the South Yorkshire Police Authority so has experience overseeing the police Nigel Bonson used to be Chief Inspector of Greater Manchester Police, so has experience running the police. My decision will be between these two.
  4. Yes, they have 28 seperate pages with a candidate on each page, as do the LibDems. They don't have a list though. Almost all of Walkley is in S6, so wouldn't that suggest they do live in the ward then? The average councillor, not everything, that's why they have a cabinet and shadow cabinet with portfolio holder who specialise in one policy area. As long as my local councillors know who to go to to get something done, I don't expect my councillor to know how the entire council works. That's the job of an elected mayor, surely! (I've just had a "training session" showing me how to use the extra editing features on SF, so expect better spelling and grammar from me from now on )
  5. I agree with your disagreement. As long as they server their area, and serve the city, I don't care where a councillor lives, as long as they live in Sheffield itself. If you had to live in the ward you wanted to stand for election in, then somebody who didn't get selected by their party would be banned from standing anywhere else. You would end up with almost no candidates at all in most of the city. I know the rules allow you to stand for election if you only work here and not live here, but I think that's a bit too flexible. You could end up with somebody living in Egypt and standing for election in Walkley!
  6. The Walkley LibDem candidate lives in S6, in Walkley itself in fact, I've got her leaflet here in front of me. According to her Lord Mayor profile she's lived in Walkley for more than 30 years. But it's city council election next week, not a Parish council election, there aren't any candidates for High Green, there are only candidates for West Ecclesfield, and the City Council website shows UKIP, LibDem, Labour and Independant all live in West Ecclesfield.
  7. LiBDem website - couldn't find a list of candidates Labour website - couldn't find a list of candidates Green website - couldn't find a list of cadidates Tory website - couldnt' find a list of candidates UKIP website - hurray! a list of candidates! I seem to remember when all the parties listed alll their candidates on their website usually with photos. What are they hiding?
  8. Exactly! And, as this year in Sheffield with Labour running the council and most LibDems trying to hold seats that Labour won last year, the only choice is a Labour council, or a stronger Labour council. So, vote for the actual person you want to be your local councillor, becuase the mathematics means that it's impossible to chuck Labour out this year. What deposit? It's LOCAL elections this year. There's no deposit for a local election, only for parliamantery elections and European elections.
  9. So, ex-politicians shouldn't be allowed to stand for election? That would mean that disbarr Diane Leek (lost 95 won 96) jean Cromar (lost 96 won 98 ) Terri Barrow (lost 99 won 2000) Vicky Presley (lost 02 won 04) alf Mead (lost 07 won 11) Steve Ayris (lost 02 won 03 lost 04 won 07) Frank Taylor (lost 03 won 08) Veronica Hardstaff (lost 07, stood 08), Bernard Little (lost 10, stood 11,12) as well as our own jgh who lost in 2010, rosy who lost in 2007 and probbably a lot of other councillors.
  10. I want a 20mph residential speed limit! I'm fed up putting my life in my hands trying to cross Walkley Bank Road trying to get home.
  11. There's 150 candidates! And how many of them have Sheffield Forum accounts?
  12. It is true. Being defended by LibDem, against a win by Labour last year: Broomhill, Crookes, East Ecclesfield, Gleadless Valley, Hillsboroigh, Mosborough, Nether Edge, Stocksbridge, Walkley, West Ecclesfield. Being defended by Labour, against a win by LibDems last year: NONE LibDems are defending six seats that they won last year. Labour are defending 12 seats that they won last year. The battleground is LibDem seats thay already lost last year. For Labour to lose the council LibDems have hold the seats they held last year AND HOLD everything they LOST last year AND win 12 nice solid Labour seats. That means winning ALL 28 seats up for election! What's the 12th weakest Labour seat? Burngreave? Darnall? With Labout with a 50% majority? So, it's impossible to change the control of the council, it will be labour or even more labour, so you may as well actually vote as a local election and vote for the PERSON you think will be the best local councillor for your area.
  13. But labour run the council and all the libdems are defending seats they lost last year, and labour are defending seats they won last year. So the only choice is between labour keeping control of the council or labour getting even more control of the council. Even if 51% of voters vote libdem it will still be a labour council. I'm going to vote my usual way and vote for a person not a party. Luckyly the defending councillor has been here for many years (but not too many, sh'es not dead wood yeat!) and I think she's done a great job as a councillor, so she's got my vote.
  14. Nothing to do with the highways agency, it's the highways department.
  15. Sheffield Central ward? That's Green, with Labour second and LibDems trailing waaayyyyyy behind: 2008 election: Central: Green 1611 40.2% Labour 1563 39.0% LibDem 522 13.0% Cons 311 7.8%
