  1. Wooohoooo, found it!!! It (the leaf) is called ukasi or okasi...I was right, but couldn't find it at first...maybe because i was using the Internet on my phone (though I don't know why it should make searching harder to do?!!!). The recipes I found contain chilli powder & also fish, but not garri (gari?). Maybe this was my housemate's personal taste. Will try out a few recipes,& put some egusi powder in it (as it sounds really tasty!),then post the recipe for others to try too! However,if anyone happens to have an authentic recipe for 'beef in okasi/ukasi sauce',please share it! X
  2. Hi, Like someone already said, it depends a lot on why you split in the first place. Plus, how long were you together, whether you were mostly happy during that time, whether there was violence from either part, how long you've been split up for, etc. It seems like an obvious question, but have you asked her if she sees a future together? Is she now with someone else? Does she just need space/time apart? Heartache's one of the worst types of pain, especially the unrequited love type, & I really do feel for you Good luck, hope you either get her back or are able to heal very soon! X
  3. Hey Badlittlepup! Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreciate it! Not sure if it's the same thing, but the name does sound similar. Looked up the recipe, & it would appear that 'egusi' is the name for melon seeds, whereas I think it was named after the leafy ingredient...but I could be wrong! I reckon I'll try the egusi stew recipe I found whilst just looking up your suggestion. If it tastes the same (or us equally delicious!), I'll let you know! I've just remembered that there's a stall in the Market (or used to be) that sells yams & other African ingredients, so will pop down there next week & ask them! I'll report back here after to let people know. You've just got to try the amazing beef stew thing I'm so desperate to make, it's so tasty!!! Thanks again! X
  4. Hi everyone! I really need some help with a Nigerian recipe! As an English person who has unfortunately never been 2 Africa, I was amazed by the delicious cuisine my Nigerian housemate used to make many years ago. There's one particular dish he made (served with pounded yam) that i've been having cravings for. However, I can't remember the recipe It contained a dried leaf (the fresh leaf is not available in the UK) & looked a lot like a curry (but it wasn't spicy at all). I've desperately tried to find the recipe on the Internet, but don't know how to spell the name of the leaf, so can't find it. All I can remember is that it was called 'beef in akasi? (or okasi?) sauce', but can't spell the name of the leaf! I know that it contained 'garri' & palm oil...& alas, that's all I remember It was absolutely amazing though, so would love to make it a.s.a.p! Whilst trying to find it on the Internet, I came across something called 'bitterleaf'...is this the same thing? If so, I found lots of soup recipes, but not the 'beef in .... sauce' recipe. Please help, if you can! Suz X Reply Report this post
  5. Thanks to everyone for the replies! I guess it's true about the getting older thing, that Xmas loses it's magic as the years go by. Maybe I'll have to start having kids, then I can bump up the future celebrations through them;)...oh, except that then I'll probably have to spend most of Xmas day in the kitchen, cooking a lovely dinner for everyone else (have always felt sorry for the mums who do this year after year...where's their holiday?). Also, I think the fact that people are more skint these days really doesn't help matters. I best get saving for that 'dream Xmas in New York' I've been wanting...then next yr, actually go and do it! Anyone going there this year? X
  6. I'm working this Xmas Day for the first time ever (late morning, til late morning Boxing Day)...and to be honest, it feels weird...and a little bit sad:confused: Not that I usually spend Xmas with my family (I don't have one), but either spend it with close friends' families, or me and my best mate just chilled and ate at my place last year. Either way, it was lovely and Christmas-like! I've received some sparkly cards, and put up some tinsel...but it just doesn't seem like Xmas is fast-approaching. It doesn't feel very festive or 'authentic' this year for me:help: Is this just me, or do other people (working or otherwise) feel the same? Can anyone cheer me up with their plans for an amazing Xmas?! X
  7. Hi Felix, I'm surprised that you have only come across two of these people in your 41 yrs...they're EVERYWHERE! They're deeply insecure people who have very low self-esteem. Some turn into pathalogical liars and attention-seekers, some turn into malicious bullies. Both are extremely unhealthy to be around. Both are emotional vampires. She knows you're still grieving for your dad, so are not mentally and emotionally strong at the moment. These sort of people will exploit any vulnerabilty (and possibly target those they see as being somehow 'weaker'), and don't seem to have the capacity for empathy. You are the one needing support and comfort, yet she's all "me, me, me!" You don't need to answer, but has she extracted lots of money from you? Anyway, I'm glad you've seen her for what she is. Believe me, the more this happens to you, the quicker you'll spot it and nip it in the bud. Truth is the ulitimate weapon against liars like this. Don't worry, you can (when you've got over this, and you eventually will!) just sit back and watch her make her own fate. People will start putting the peices together, and she'll create her own downfall. Take care! X
  8. I lived just up from the park for years, until I moved a few years ago. I really miss talking to Craig, he's a lovely, gentle and respectful man. Ok, so Frosty Jacks was always keeping him company; but even when drunk (I've spoken to him during all the stages), Craig was NEVER EVER aggressive or violent at ANY time. You could put him in the 'happy drunk' catagory. I've spent a long time on many occasions chatting to Craig...he tells some pretty funny stories! He's always really positive, even though sometimes he must get quite down. Andrew Gill is NOT Craig! Craig is in his mid-40's (and looks every year and more of it!), whereas Andrew Gill is 30 yrs old. X
  9. Well, I've been away camping nr. Bakewell, and come back to find my thread still alive and well! I thought we'd wrapped this one up, but can see that folk are still enjoying a good banter with each other. I did find sskirrrow's comment rather interesting, and also wonder how they're going to fund this....or maybe they already have been, and that's what I saw (any more schools closed down recently?!?). Anyway, it's obvious the more intelligent people on here may need something more profound for their brains to chew on. I'm not sure how, but I stumbled upon this last night: Ok, so it's quite long....but interesting? I think so! X P.S. for anyone going to Bakewell in the near future, 'Bloomers of Bakewell' make an amazing homity pie and pork/stilton pie!
  10. Hey Chriscalcite, you may seriously be onto something here!!! I googled the BAe Taranis stealth drone, and found this pic.... Now then, that is pretty damned close to what I saw:o Wow, if that's what it was, then this is some amazing-looking bit of modern technology:love: So, how come it was so shiny in a dark sky? Reflecting the moon perhaps? Thanks so much for your help with this (everyone), but I definitely think this is the most plausible explanation I'm likely to encounter (thanks Chris). I'd still love to hear from anyone else who also saw the craft, or have encountered something similar. X
  11. Now calm down boys, don't be fighting on my thread! Nevertheless, Halibut was right, I hadn't been to the pub: I ('she', not 'he'!) was working. I work with extremely vulnerable people, so never drink anything on the day/night of my shift. Whatawaste: I saw some Chinese lanterns about 4 yrs ago, and did think there was an alien invasion at first. So did the rest of the street, until someone told us it was the 'Sharrow Festival of Light'. THIS was NOTHING like it at all [please people, no more mention of Chinese lanterns:gag:]! You can laugh as much as you like at my crappy efforts to supply an image of the 'craft'....but not having any drawing software/hardware for my laptop, I had to use Paint! http://i51.tinypic.com/2hrpah3.jpg I'm certain that it's good enough for anyone who saw it to recognise, so that's cool with me! chriscalcite: thanks for your intelligent post, and for posing the 'stealth aircraft' question. This was actually the next question I asked myself after "what the hell was that?" and "I definitely didn't imagaine that?". However, I am very familiar with various stealth and non-stealth aircraft. Having spent five long summers selling binoculars at most of the UK's main airshows, I came to know them well! I know how they look when they are standing still, flying close up or far away, how they move in the sky, how they sound, how they do/don't shine when the light hits them, etc, etc. The B2 and F117 were actually my favourites, even though I'm not really into aircraft. They were amazing things, and absolutely the same sort of shape as the 'UFO' I saw. Where this arguement falls down, is that: a) this was shiny silver (or maybe a bit less of a possibility, glowing), and not matt black; b) the 'thing' was no further away from the stealths I have seen at airshows, yet it made no sound whatsoever; c) the shape was very, very clear to me, and was NOT exactly the same as any stealth aircraft I'm currently aware of. This leads me to wonder whether they (*insert your own answer here*) were test-driving a new one??? X
  12. I've done a little picture of the 'UFO' I saw. It's not the best, but will hopefully give a general idea of what it looked like. SF won't allow me to insert it into my post:huh: Any ideas? X
  13. Thanks for your replies, everyone! I wish someone else had seen this...they would agree with me that it was also definitely NOT: an illusion (involving the moon, the dark and its effects on the eye, etc.), a cloud partially covering the moon, a space station, Chinese lanterns (yeah, you did right to run away after that, 'julado'!), debris + street lights (there were none nearby), 'something in my ciggie' (although that did pass the 'clever, but funny' test!)...and my absolute favourite, 'a black bin liner'. It was none of those things! X
  14. No, like I already said, I definitely didn't imagine this. I wasn't just 'seeing things', it was extremely clear! I'm the sort of person who likes to dismiss weird sightings/happenings (or explain them with logic, if possible), but this was a very definite, real sighting. X
  15. Colt, thanks for you reply! It was similar, in that this is the correct shade of colour. However, the 'thing' I saw was much wider, and went in at the back...like an equilateral triangle with a smaller triangle/wedge cut out at the rear. I'll have to draw a little picture for people to see, but I'm not sure how (insert a jpeg?). X
