  1. I popped in to the market and stopped off at the info desk and asked the guy there how many empty units there were, he said 18 although I didn't actually go round counting them all. There is a market manager so it must be possible to contact him so maybe if people start asking him directly why the stalls are empty and who was telling porkies the Star or the council, if I have a bit of time next week I intend to send him an email myself as although I don't have a great deal of need for the market neither do I want it to struggle to survive through bad management.
  2. I'm curious and so thought I might ask how many empty stalls are there. I've been in the place twice and although I saw a few with shutters down it certainly didn't look like it was a high percentage.
  3. I think I've enjoyed most of the films I've seen him in and he's a better actor than some, got so engrossed in the film 'Educating Rita' when I saw it at the pictures in the final scene I Squarked out quite loudly 'KISS HER'. Dirty rotten scoundrels and Blame it on Rio both make me laugh
  4. Some routes may have squeeze points to stop motorbikes or cars using them as either short cuts or when you've got an idiot joyriding. I can't recollect ever having seen any designated cycle routes with either the 'A' frame barrier or the 'K' barrier although there are some which have a bit of fencing making a chicane. The cheaper alternative is to just place large boulders in the way although on green tracks such things tend to get moved by four wheel drive enthusiasts. There is some discussion starting on making a selection of radial routes from the city centre out into the suburbs and I know they are looking at ways and means of making the routes fully accessible but still limiting or stopping the anti-social elements. I'm sure it was either tried or at least considered somewhere to install gates which could only be opened with a radar key much like disabled toilets but apparently the trial of this failed as the gates were just left open.
  5. I quite enjoy keeping the internet type one's on the phone for as long as possible, whilst they're talking too me at least they can't be annoying anyone else. Other callers who don't have english as their first language but usually have a very normal sounding name I've got into the habit of asking them to spell their name out or informing them that I don't believe it's their real name.. Usually get a rapid hang up if I start asking what the weather is like where they are as well
  6. It's often difficult to tell where the pavement stops and the land belonging to the shop starts as many places the council have just put down a solid sheet of paving with no demarkation line visible. I suppose some shops may get away with having their wares on the actual pavement simply because no-one has bothered to complain much the same as with A boards, the council will only take action if people start grumping. So if anyone is unhappy with a shop blocking off the pavement with either A boards or shop wares then I'd imagine a phone call to highways enforcement may be the way to go. The demarkation though may get a little clearer as apparently Amey will only be treating the actual pavement area, assuming of course that an area of paving needs attention outside a shop. One thing that bugged me a while ago was a block of shops on Abbeydale road across and a little further up from the bottom of Carterknowle, the shops can put stuff on their land/frontage but the actual pavement is probably a metre across as they made a car layby. No problem until a shop being worked on had a skip on the frontage and a works van and then you meet one of those huge kiddy buggies being pushed along the pavement
  7. Looks like you've got two ways out of this, I'm not going to suggest moving as that's not really a suitable solution. Approach the neighbours and ask them to fence in their garden so the dog can't get on to the path, you could say it's because you're worried the dog may make a bolt for freedom whilst the gate is open. Your other option is to become bestest friends with the dog, a few dog treats or similar and taking the time to try and re-assure it that you are nice
  8. The kerbs will be getting any damaged sections repaired, if anyone has a driveway and the kerb isn't up to standard then the home owner may be asked if they want to pay for a dropped kerb being instaled. Also at a lot of the junctions dropped kerbs and tactile paving will be going in to make life easier for mums with buggies or disabled folk to cross the road
  9. If my car refused to start checking for water in the petrol wouldn't be my initial conclusion and although I have a small stirrup pump and know how to do it I wouldn't of thought most people would have the tools or knowledge to remove fuel from a tank, the mouth and hose technique is not to be recommended as petrol tastes quite nasty
  10. Why not try ringing 2734567 and ask the council, then when you've got an answer come back on here and tell us. I've had friends living at Bradway who were getting slightly miffrd at the amount of traffic barreling through a relatively narrow residential road. People in greenhill didn't like the many vehicles coming up through their estate either but I thought there had been a weight limitation sign installed to at least stop articulated wagons trundling through.
  11. An underpass or tunnel might seem like a good idea to some but they don't seem to get much support from the public as they are viewed as mugging hot spots , not so bad if they can be designed to be really wide and can be seen through before entering like the one leading people through to the bottom of London road. A bridge with it's sloped walkway access takes up an awful lot of room and if it's to be usuable for all it can't just have a flight of steps at each side. I once heard a figure for a surface crossing and it seemed astronomical and I suspect the cost of an underpass or bridge would be even higher and money as we all know is limited when it comes to road improvements.
  12. The stop start might not be apreciated by some drivers who want to get from A to B as quickly as possible and sod everyone else wanting to use the road. I assume the lights allow traffic to merge on to the road or allow pedestrians to cross or holds traffic back so you don't get a lot of vehicles trying to use the same junction at the same time a bit further on. It is odd though that no-one wants to just accept the fact that a great many of our roads are reaching capacity and so in effect will at times resemble a car park, after all try driving on the N25 at times, it's horrible or look at the plans to convert hard shoulders into travel lanes I assume that is because the number of vehicles has and is increasing
  13. New columns went in a few weeks back now but they haven't had their heads attacjed in most cases and the old lamps are still in and working. However they are now in the process of ripping up the old pavements and putting down the under lying first course which means that it will have to be dug up again to wire in the new lights and remove the old light columns. So on Monday I'm going to be contacting the guy in charge of my area to ask what the are up to as either the people in charge of co-ordinating the works has made a boo boo or the are again struggling to have enough qualified electricians on the job. I'm going to give them a gentle nudge just in case some bright spark sends in a team to actually put the final top coat on the pavement before the electrical works are done and the old columns removed. ---------- Post added 01-02-2014 at 23:55 ---------- I'd be really interested to know what the response was from the council when you reported the light 12 months ago and no doubt on some more recent occasions as well.
  14. My first option would be to go round and screw the floorboards down rather than nailing them
  15. The internet can really push out incorrect and unsubstantiated rumours and for some odd reason people read things on line and take them as fact. . So now I've got to be worried that if I walk through the park with my coat hood up I'm going to be attacked by some vigilante as I'm a lone bloke obviously trying to conceal my face
  16. Hi, sorry I gave up in the end and had the machine wiped and then had everything re-installed, the problem seems to of gone away , the tech guy thought it might of been caused by a glitch when updating IE but he wasn't sure. but I'm now using Firefox and trying to get used to that instead as IE has another bug that seems almost impossible to track down. I wont bore you with the details but yet again there are people talking about it online, lots of advice which is not helpful and no definite answer so I'm going to leave IE alone Thanks for all the help offered and given though
  17. People who drive automatics must really bug some tail gaters then as in an automatic you slow the car down by breaking quite often. I always found as well a few flashes of my brake lights would make annoying tail gaters back off
  18. An old chimney could be blocked so some-one who knows what they're doing with a smoke bomb would be my first idea. I always think of the person who opened up a ground floor fireplace and then lit a fire, they couldn't understand why the smoke didn't go up the chimney till a builder came round and noticed the chimney breast and therefore chimney had been removed in the first floor bedroom
  19. The stairs in the Hallamshire hospital are a killer but they're also narrow and used quite a bit so I'd go and have a look at the arts tower as your closest place with many equally spaced steps. Obviously the Hallamshire could come in useful if you suffer a heart attack though
  20. I can understand why this is a good idea but seeing as how it's against the law to use mobile phones whilst driving and yet you'll see loads of people doing exactly that I think the enforcement is going to be problematical.
  21. I'd of asked for the manager to be called over there and then and probably said sorry to anyone being held in the queue
  22. Poynton Is the first large scale road junction that I have seen, I knew about Park lane and have seen the teensy little road the council have experimented with at Wyburn but it's nice to see that a little out of the box thinking can generate rewards for all. However you can go even further by actually replacing the normal black tarmac of a road surface with coloured brick or similar which again says to the vehicle driver they haven't automatically got right of way
  23. I've got friends up that way and my mother lived there for years and in all the time I've wandered round I never felt un-easy or threatened. There are a few teens hanging around the shops but then that's true for all shopping area's and I suspect the area is probably quieter now the pub has closed. If the weather were a bit warmer I'd suggest you sit by the shops and ask some of the locals you'll probably find some who have lived their all their lives and like it.
  24. Well I'm sure some drivers will ignore the speed restrictions same as the sign for when a road is to be used for access, only if it'sa handy cut through it'll still get used as a cut through. So my solution is simple although car drivers aren't going to like it either start rolling out the shared surface scheme or slightly more out of the box fit each car with a recieverand every area covered by transmitters and the car computer wont let the car break the limits imposed
  25. I'm not sure who it is that can actually issue fines if you are seen leaving your dogs mess behind but I've never heard of anyone being fined so suspect people will not pick up as they know the chances of being fined is remote. If I ever become aware of the person somewhere near me wit what I suspect is a baby or even adolescent elephant I'm going to be having words.
