  1. The birthrate is rising in Sheffield, not just because of immigrants though. Older women are having children and so are much younger women. Fertility treatments also contribute to rising birthrates. It's not quite as simple as you make out. Where will the extra money come from anyway?
  2. He did ask her, in English for my benefit and in cantonese when she didn't answer the question. She just busied herself with confirming our order, asking my hubby where he learned to speak chinese (not unusual, as he doesn't look strikinly chinese) and took the order to the kitchen. She deliberately didn't answer the question which made me wonder what the reason writing it was. I agree with viney40, live and let live. I've no hard feelings at all, it's just me being curious!
  3. Just to clarify, I'm not complaining or moaning. Hubby and I have eaten in lots of chinese restaurants around the world and haven't experienced this before. If it is to identify to the chef how to serve/prepare the food then I would prefer to be asked rather than automatically having my meal 'Anglicised', hubby in particular despises the so called chinese food most places serve! If it is for research purposes then I'm not that bothered. Either way I would eat at Jabu again
  4. Yes, there was only one waitress in today, and we were the only customers. The only favourable reason I can think of is they audit their receipts.
  5. Hubby just made a good point. It might just be data collection to determine the demographics of their customers. Fair enough! Babyboom- Did the restaurant say why they wrote 'black couple' on the bill?
  6. It was after we had ordered from the chinese written menu in hubby's case and the english one in mine. Tomm- I didn't say I was bothered, just wondered what the reason might be. It's probably not negative and the service and food were great. If it was negative I would like to know! Maybe someone on here has worked in a restaurant where this might be necessary for whatever reason? Grim Reaper- has something similar happened to you in Wong Ting?
  7. No, we go there waaay too much though! It was Jabu on London road. We really enjoyed the food but it seemed a bit of an unnecessary thing to write.
  8. The waitress at a chinese restaurant we ate in today wrote (in Chinese) '2 english people' on the order? My hubby, who is half Chinese and cantonese and mandarin are his first languages, asked her why but she evaded the question and spoke in Chinese from then on. Just wondering what purpose it served, we were the only people in the restaurant at the time. Has anyone ever encountered this before?
  9. My hubby lost his within a week of getting married, he just wasn't used to wearing a ring and kept fiddling with it and dropped it somewhere. Best thing we've done is buy him a cheap (£20) titanium one and a nice one, for special occasions only! Sods law he didn't lose the cheap one!
  10. Maybe you should ring your community midwife or Jessop Wing triage if you're over 20 weeks pregnant. 0114 2268091. I hope everything is ok.
  11. I find shopping in Sheffield centre is hard work and I don't take any pleasure in it. On the other hand I adore Manchester, Leeds and Norwich and would happily go on day trips there for a bit of xmas shopping and a nice lunch. It's not always about the shops, most high streets are pretty generic anyway, but about the experience. Birmingham has great shops and the bullring is clean and undercover but the whole place lacks atmosphere. Norwich is small, but it has got a great charm that I would love Sheffield to have. For example Chapel Walk could be brought back to life with some less tacky shops and a tidy up. Just my humble opinion though! On another note, does anyone know if there will be a new GAP opening in the city centre?
  12. I know someone with a company called 'Made in Italy', all the products are made in China or Taiwan really.
  13. I don't think tamiflu 'wears off' like painkillers, it has a cumulative effect in your body, like antibiotics.
  14. Students can do whatever they like when they're out. If I went to a bar in the city centre I would expect raucous students to be around, most of the bars in Sheffield would be shut down without their cash. All I ask is that when they come home they do so in a considerate, quiet manner. Being woken up at 2.30am by yelling and throwing of traffic cones when I need to be up for work at 5.00am doesn't endear them a great deal!
  15. I think Lucy looked stunning! A halloween themed wedding would have been perfect and very memorable for the right reasons if it hadn't been ruined. I hope she can look back on the positive parts of her special day without it being tainted by the attack. I had a chinese wedding in the registry office earlier this year and I now feel fortunate that we only encountered positive reactions from people around town, by the sounds of it we could have come in for some stick for not having a 'white wedding' in this 'christian' country
  16. I read on the planning portal that the inside is pretty much derelict, full of junk and dead pigeons! It would be a massive job to restore and convert.
  17. I think the work they are doing now is to prevent them being fined for letting it get into disrepair, it looks like they're just boarding windows and making the roof a bit more water tight. I think the reason the flats never got off the ground is the lack of parking (and funds!). It really restricts anything being done with it. My OH and I wanted to buy it and I personally would have loved it to be a spa possibly with a few hotel rooms, a swimming pool etc. Parking would still be an issue though so I suppose until someone has a breakthrough it will remain boarded up and used for fly tipping and squatters. It's such a shame.
  18. The great thing about modern apartments is they have to adhere to strict (to the point of onerous) soundproofing measures. So I suppose if you can hear neighbours music and yelling with windows shut then it's probably pretty bad! Victorian terraces on the other hand...
  19. We live in a student area and most are considerate but there are a few noisy fools who are going a bit mad now they're away from home. The lads across the road are a prime example. They have had 3 loud parties since they started in September. The police did tell them to take it inside the house and keep the noise down but this didn't last. One of them got his willy out at me when I asked him to keep it down! I was up at 6.00am for work, not just being grumpy. I either wear earplugs or put my air purifier on to mask the noise when they're playing up. It's not worth the bother of asking them to be quiet because when they've been drinking in noisy clubs/bars they don't even realise how loud they are. I've recently found a number you can ring that is manned 24/7 and is based at the university, it's 2224085 if you have a concern about student behaviour. It is in the student charter to be considerate to neighbours and they will punish anyone who doesn't show the appropriate respect to their neighbourhood (well that's the theory anyway ).
  20. They have a misleading name at best. People park on double yellows at end of my driveway all the time, I work shifts, and once I had to ring them to report a car obstructing my exit. Guess what response I got? "I'm sorry, there's no van in your area this afternoon". I had to get a lift to work from my dad!!! Husband hung around the front for the offending person to come back to their car to give them a huge earful. It was a woman who had gone shopping and of all the expanse of double yellows to park on she chose the end of a driveway? The wardens don't actually give a damn about the reason they're do their jobs anyway, to make roads safer and for residents to access their own property maybe? Nope, to make easy money apparently.
  21. Dad has this, it's going round his office. I'm keeping well away until he's been all clear for a day or two! Co-codamol are great, they relieve pain, bind you up a bit and make you sleep.
  22. It's always hot-dress appropriately. Weekday mornings are dead, all the slobs are still in bed and kids are (or should be) at school. I can appreciate older babies going into creche but young babies need to be breastfed or mums often have never been separated from them before so prefer to keep them with them until they are older. It's also one of the easiest places to take a buggy when a new mum has to get out of the house to prevent her going mental. I do however, think it's the lesser of two evils, the city centre is a million times worse and I'd rather be a bit warm than soaking wet! The slow walkers who stop in the middle of the malls need to be punched in the back of the head (there is a facebook group dedicated to this!)
  23. Just remembered, a housemate of one of my friends (about 6 years ago) came back drunk one night, made a lot of noise so we went to see if he was ok. He was struggling into the house with a wooden gate, a box of mangoes and a wingmirror... because he felt like it! Next morning he couldn't remember where he had acquired any of them. If any of the students this year are anything like as bad as him it's going to be a rough year.
  24. We witnessed (and video taped) some students trashing wheelie bins and bus stops in Crookesmoor a couple of weeks ago. They were even shouting each others names! Told the police and a community support officer dropped round. They are taking this kind of thing seriously and want all incidents of vandalism and anti social behaviour to be reported to build up a picture. They are working with the uni's to prevent this behaviour because students are making life difficult for residents year after year. I've had words with several sets of student neighbours about their parties when I'm trying to sleep before an early shift. Most apologised, a couple gave me attitude back ( I was very polite and reasonable, I'm not a confrontational person, more pathetic tired and begging!), several chimed in with 'we thought only students lived round here' which made me furious. Do they think they live in a flipping student village and it's a ghost town when they leave? Report things like this on phone number 101 and keep on reporting them! Surely they should be studying...isn't that what their parents are paying 3k a year for?
