Good luck with it all and I'm so pleased your boss seems to be open to the idea of flexible working. It can be tricky for employers but it can also be rewarding too. As for it being more expensive - depends what you're talking about there. For example, 2 people sharing a job part-time can SAVE an employer approximately £1100 per annum in employers national insurance as neither employee will reach the threshold that means the employer is liable for Emp NI. (based on approx £7.25 ph rate) At twenty one, my only concern was whether my shoe colour matched my handbags so I for one am proud that you are trying to be responsible. Reproduction is here to stay. So are bills, unfortunately. So - unless there are any bright ideas as to how this girl (and most other parents) can provide for her baby without being 100% reliant on the taxpayer, I think we should support her. As for the kiddy card with time off for children's illnesses. How sad is that? Lets hope the people with that attitude don't received the same lack of support if their loved ones became ill. I've worked with many-a-slacker who didn't have children but felt it an absolute perk of the job to have the odd sick day here and there to spring clean their house! It is a hard balance to strike for any parent and also any employer. If it is practicable for your employer, great. If it isn't and they have provided a good business reason as to why it isn't - fair enough. Some jobs just don't suit flexible working. If they don't (in your opinion) provide a reasonable business reason I'd recommend you speak to a guy called Tom at Taylor & Emmet solicitors for a free consultation. He'll give you an idea as to whether you have a case to take further. I had a real rough ride with my employer but it worked out in the end. I also thank them for it as without that horrendous and frightening experience I wouldn't have had the courage to set up my own business which I did with my hubby. He worked the day shift and I did the paperwork in the evening when my son was in bed. Mummy in the mud during the day. Managing Director at night hey??! Win win. I now have a thriving business and spent pretty much all of my time with him - he is due to start school in September and I have enjoyed him to the max! I was very lucky (or stupidly brave) to be able to do this. I can also assure you that if I ever get a request for flexible working I will bend over backwards to accommodate. Parents have a lot to offer the workplace. Good luck sweety. I'm sure your son will too have a great work ethic. xxx

So true - us em or lose em. Small independent retailers and businesses work so hard and of course they are more expensive than the large chains - they don't have the buying power. I used to think my mum didn't know what she was on about when she said to me years ago that soon enough the local shops would be boarded up and the big chains would hold the power. She also predicted that once the little man and corner shops were on their way out we'd see a huge rise in costs in the chains. Now don't get me wrong, the large brands and supermarkets do a great job and obviously suit demand. However, do you know what - considering the cost of my "big shop" this week, I think the old gal may just have had a valid point. Damn, don't you just hate it when your mum is right?! ha ha This post has served as a timely reminder of what is happening. I'm going to buy my beef joint from the local butchers tomorrow and drop my shoulder on the big guns. Yes, it'll cost me a bob or two more but as you say - use em or lose em. Be great if we could all buy something local on a regular basis or organise a "support your local day." My restaurant recommendations is Rossi's Italian. Beautiful food and spotless. (Please don't tell me they are a chain!!)

Just tried it for the first time and I'm giving it a massive  Nice guy answered the phone, told me the meal would be about 45 minutes and give or take a minute or two, he was right! It was also delivered by another nice chap. The order was first of all - correct (I'm so used to deliveries having something missing or wrong!) and the meal was absolutely gorgeous. You could tell the food was fresh - again, seem to have got used to cardboard naan breads! The other bit that is important to me is the temperature of it and it was piping hot despite it being a home delivery. So - in my opinion it was gorgeous. The only thing that would be the icing on the cake would be for the scores on the doors people to review it. Off for a lay down now!
-
I agree - the scores on the doors service is very good and definitely makes you think twice about where you eat. I too was gobsmacked at the hygiene compliance and haven't ordered since I saw it. Anyway - going to give Chutney's a try tonight and let you all know!!

I was caught stealing in McDonalds today.

Technically - that is not the case, although a common misconception. You'll find though that in order to prove the case the thief will be allowed to leave the store without paying in order for a better case to stand up in court. The definition is something like dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it yadda yadda yadda. You can do that the second you pick something up and for eg put it in your pocket. Proving the intention is the part of allowing the person to leave the store. However, if you for instance, pick up a bottle of expensive plonk and neck it - you can have stolen it there and then without leaving if you can't show that you had money on you to pay for it. Thats the technicality. The reality though, like you say, is they will always allow you to leave the store to prove beyond reasonable doubt you were half-inching it! You think the reason the checkouts are always at the end of the shop is convenience - well it is that AND its to prove theft if you walk past a checkout without paying! -
I have a book and I have recommended the books to my friends. I have only used the Bar 23 vouchers and Ski Village vouchers so far and both companies were absolutely excellent. Bar 23 even allowed me to overspend without having to contribute so cheers to them! I was very disappointed with Bar 360 though. I tried to spend my voucher with them (cocktail). The barman tried to tell me that there was a "private party" on (it was a Saturday night) and therefore the voucher was not valid, BUT, get this, if I was prepared to buy drinks, I would be more than welcome to stay with the private party. Or, he'd be happy to let me cash it in the Sunday evening. Yeah right - don't know about you but I'm lucky to get out on a Saturday night once every six months, let alone a Saturday and a Sunday in the same weekend! I was with a group of 12 girls who incidentally were all buying drinks so they would have made a tidy profit on my friends drinks for the sake of honouring their voucher. I was more than a little disappointed, more out of principal than cost and I pointed out that this was not part of the criteria on the voucher and told him I would be telling the organisers of the book. Out of prinicipal, I told my friends to cancel their orders and we left the bar. On my way out I asked several customers if they were there for a private party and they of course were completely baffled. If it was a private party, it was not policed properly. There were no signs up saying so and they did not ask on entry. They only told me when I tried to present my voucher. In short, this incident did leave a sour taste as I felt that they were taking the publicity but not honouring their side of the bargain which when in the name of charity, is not good. Its not fair on the other companies that are doing their bit either. I did contact the organisers who to be fair were mortified about my experience and they promised to take this up with the management of the bar. I never heard anything from them afterwards though and (I did leave my number) so I don't know the outcome of what was discussed. At least if they did take it up with the bar then my experience may have benefited others as hopefully they would do the right thing for future. I don't want to let this put anyone off as I have also had very positive experiences when booking the Psalter and the Leolpold - they couldn't have been more helpful so I'll put this one down to a one-off and hope that the rest of the book lives up to its expectations. It really is excellent and hats off if it raises money for charity - whatever the percentage. If I get back more than what I paid, businesses make money/raise their own profile and charity benefits - I'm happy.

Hi all, I've been to Jungle Mania this afternoon and stupidly, I left my phone unattended. Needless to say - it went on the missing list. I was devasted as it had all my photo's on and recordings etc - and of course, I haven't backed my phone numbers up anywhere! I reported it to the staff but unfortunately it hadn't been handed in but they were really helpful and got straight onto the CCTV pictures straight away where they identified a couple that had been sat at the side of me and they made a sharp exit with what "appeared" to be my phone. I phoned my number several times and as you'd imagine it kept going straight to voicemail - so I sent a text advising that we were checking the CCTV and would be identifying where my phone was soon. I left the play centre and have received a call to say that the couple have returned the phone saying that they picked it up by mistake, from my table as it was similar to theirs. This does beg the question why they were picking a phone up from my table and why they didn't answer the dozen phonecalls in the first place but nevertheless, I am just extremely pleased and thankful I have my phone back - but more than anything, my precious photo's. Maybe it was an honest mistake...... I would like to thank the staff at Jungle Mania who were extremely helpful and very disappointed for me - they did bend over backwards - literally climbing the slides etc to help me look for it. Its also served as a reminder for me to back my details up onto 02's website which is free of charge - maybe we all should do this before we get that sickly feeling that you've just lost all your details and were daft enough not to save them! Like me! Not again though..... So - the moral of the story - a nice little reminder that I shouldn't be so stupid leaving my belongings unattended whilst I faff about on slides! AND Back your details up now if you're as daft as me at times! AND Thank you for your help and honesty Jungle Mania - and probably the couple too.....

As I said - what is the point in posting to a thread in Going out in Sheffield if you're not necessarily planning on doing anything tonight? Never mind - if someone trying to raise the profile of cruelty to children offends and inconveniences you, there is little point in trying to explain my well-intentioned actions to you. Apologies all.

What are you up to later?

Thanks so much sweet-cheeks! -
Please please leave this thread here! I'm trying to attract people that don't necessarily have plans for this evening so won't be looking in the Going out in Sheffield section! That is why I didn't post it there in the first place! If you fancy a bit of keep fit - the NSPCC are holding an aerobathon at Ponds Forge tonight. It starts at 6pm and is for 2 hours. It is £5 and you get a T-shirt thrown in. Get fit for a good cause. (You don't have to do the full 2 hours by the way!) Cheers! Hope to see you there.

It would have been really helpful to have left this thread where is was in the hope that people who weren't necessarily planning to do anything tonight, or looking in the Going out in Sheffield section would see this thread and come along. Please please put it back!

Hi All- Usually - I like to be a chilled out lazy little sausage - however ..... Just found out about this fabulous event on Mon, Nov 9th at Ponds Forge in aid of NSPCC. A 2 hour workout for £5 and you get a T-shirt thrown in too. I'm going to get my lazy behind off the settee and be as un-co-ordinated (is this even a word!) as I possibly can be and make everyone laugh at me behind my back at my lack of rhythm!!!!! If you and your buddies fancy this - please see below and come and join in the sheer carnage that will happen when I get involved in a "grapevine!" Hope to see you all there! Failing that if public humiliation is not your thing - how about just helping out on the night? http://www.nspcc.org.uk/getinvolved/..._wde67742.html

Hi All, I found a section on the council website that allows you to check out restaurants/cafes on the food hygiene compliance. I am rather shocked at some of the ones I've been eating at to say the least and won't be going to these places again! I must be getting old - gone are the days I'll eat in a rammy old take-away after a belly full of beer! ha:hihi: I am surprised all food outlets don't have to meet an absolute minimum of 3 stars given health implications or maybe even display their rating. Well done to the council though on this system - I personally like it and will be using it in future too and using the places that put the effort into being clean!!! Rossi's here I come! Here is the link - http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/index.php
