  1. This a bit of a late question, but can anyone tell me if there is a list of men who fell, or where I can find out? 3 of my ancestors I can't find after 1901, their name was Savage. William Edward last seen Pte KOYLI at Tansley,Leic.age 21. Fred age 18 & Charlie age 17 last seen with father in 1901 at Marcus St. As I haven't found them after that date I can only assume they were in the 1914-18 war. Thanks.
  2. Hi Fleetwood, 38 (M) Signals Regt. Barnsley Rd. moved to Manor Top about 1960, in 1958 NS men were on the books but were not expected to report, that may have stopped earlier than 58. Was there 1958-70.
  3. Thank you everyone for that resume especially the web site, it was most interesting, didn't know there was such info. available. Used that route during 53/54 changing engines at Penistone and was at Neepsend 57/58, anyone know what is there inplace of the box ,concrete slab? The sidings were controlled from Neepsend, but can't remember any engine shed, the only buildings near the sidings were the Brick Works.
  4. Just for info. The Forum was normally classed as at Southey Green and was part of the Essoldo group with the Capital at Lane Top and the one at Ecclesfield. The last time I saw the Forum about 15 years ago, it had been replaced by a supermarket. Worked there 50/51 in the projection box, anyone remember the horse races on stage?
  5. The place they are sitting looks like the bottom of the steps going up to the booking office, there should have been a double gate to the side of them for when they used to be freight. The spaces in the newer pictures are where a goods line used to run round the back of the station to Upwell St Box and then to Grimesthorpe Marshalling Yd. Nearly opposite where they are sitting would be Limpsfield Rd. and I spent many a day after school sitting with friends just watching the trains go by in the 40's. Metal Gate at top of Station Lane would be for Engineers to get on to line. Not many places to do so on that stretch of line.
  6. . Tell your gran not to worry, it will take a few months as long as she does as she is told by the cardiologists, take moderate exercise and don't overdo it. Have had 2 ops. for 3 bypasses 1986/1990 (Killingbeck & Hull)and a neighbour 85 just had a bypass and valve and is doing well. Understand that Sheffield is one of the best for heart ops. Good luck to her.
  7. Looking for the Helliwell family, lived Bellhouse Rd. end of Firth Park Crescent in the 1950's, daughter Leslie would be about 73 now, went to grammer school other side of Sheffield but don't know which one but wore brown blazer, taking her exams in 1952. Believe married mid 1955 but to who?, last seen Firth Park 1959 belived living up Bellhouse Rd. Name may now may be Winter
  8. 7TR, Somme lines, regular basic training. 1TR, Kemmel lines, Line/Tele Tech training.
  9. Hi, Lived 47 Limpsfield Rd. from 33-47 but can't say I recall the names, probably after my time.
  10. To my vague knowledge, the only bomb was a mine dropped to the south end of Brightside Station, the lines weren't damaged but the property around was. As far as I can remember no bombs around Jenkin Rd, unless some knows different.
  11. Looking for the Helliwell Family, last known address Firth Park Crescent 1952, daughter Lesley married about 1955, to a Duncan Wright?? Last seen 58/59 Firth Park shopping centre presumably living in that area, may have been living up Bellhouse Rd. Possible that name may now be Winter, have information, may be important Cancelled, no further search required.
  12. Thank you biker for that, I don't know if Les bought the shop out when Syd retired as he was a partner in the buisiness, I don't think his daughter would know either, she didn't seem to be in England for most of the time and I had moved to York in 69
  13. There is one thing, there was a Barrage Balloon stationed on Wicobank Hill, top of Jenkin Rd, the nearest works were at Meadow Hall Rd about 1/2 mile away and they were Engineering, the main ones were between Carlisle St. and Attercliffe Common, the foundries and rolling mills. Could this have been done to decieve? and the River Don was not that far away
  14. As I was only 7 at the time my memory is not too good. It would be the 2nd raid that went from the Wicker to the North at Brightside, a land mine landed in the vacinity of Brightside Railway Station, damaging the platform buildings, the Booking Office was re built on the over bridge. The blast destroyed houses and shops from Limpsfield Rd to Dearne St. (Station Hotel), also going up the roads and through the houses to the back yards, removing windows, slates and ceilings, when we came out of the Anderson Shelters in the early morning all you could hear was the crunch under foot of glas and slate, the suprising thing was that we had left the middle door shut with budgie and cage behind it, door of its hinges, bird ok. There was a time when we thought all had ended, a flash we saw through the shelter door and a bang, a gasometer on Holywell Rd had blown up, inciendry hit it and one was burning ontop of the next one, some man went up and kicked it off. My mother was at Millhouses on the first raid (tram conductress) and had to walk back through Sheffield as best she could, taking shelter in door ways trams and buildings burning, she said that at one time she saw a head role past!! we were surprised when she got home, thought that she would have stayed where she was. School was at the Doctors house and soup vans at the bottom of the road. If anyone disputes facts, blame it on age.
