  1. Heard on Radio 4 today that moves are afoot in the US to make discrimination against overweight people illegal, in the same way that it's not allowed to discriminate against individuals or groups on the basis of disability, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, etc.

But surely obesity is - for most people- a choice, whereas all the other things are not.

Doesn't seem like the best way to 'turn the tanker round' and get Americans back on the right path to health...?

    Like homosexuality then? *hides*

  2. In terms of AI, we are a LONG way off. There are various companies studying the human brain, mapping it etc. We are 250 years off (projected) mapping a whole brain.

Even after we map the whole thing, we will still be too far off creating a comparable thing. The human body is fully mapped (the rest of it) but we are not much closer to creating a replica.

Computing power is not really linked to better AI either, that is not what is holding back AI technology.

The guy that does studies in film (he did a great essay regarding the shining) has a series on YouTube regarding AI. I forget the name of his channel now (http://www.youtube.com/user/robag88). It is great stuff.

Speaking non AI wise, the threat would be jobs I think.

  3. Hi people,

Eventually managed to get a video sorted of my wheelchair with the new lights. What you think?

Obligitory: yaw dawg, I heard you like lights. So we put some lights on yaw lights, so you can shine while you shine.

    Looks good :-)

  4. On the news today they showed footage of an e cigarette that exploded whilst being recharges.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26958397

It was a pretty dramatic explosion caught on a pubs CCTV. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the fire officer said it was the 18th incident they had been called to in North Yorkshire in 7 months. It seems that some of these devices are not safe.

Isn't it time there was some regulation on the sale of these items. They have caused several fires and clearly quality control is non existent.

More ammo for the government and tobacco companies. They have been trying their best rubbishing e-cigs on the beeb recently. Even going below the belt and claiming that kids are using them. "oh think of the children".

I see through all of that though. They are loosing money, and it will hit them even harder the more e-cigs take on. And with no "legislation" (tax) the government are not taking their cut either.

  5. Clarkson attention whoreing again? please say it isn't so!!

Pay no attention to this moron. Why people still tune in to see him acting like a child with expensive toys, I really do not know. Oh yeah that's the reason: people in the UK like garbage telly.

  6. Use a public telephone box? :gag: (Gotta love that smell of urine, ETC, like high-rise flat stairs!)

Watch VHS tapes? (Loved the endless winding, fade-out spots and 'snow'!)

Still post on a Friends Re-united or Myspace account?

Write...:o.. letters - apart from Xmas? (Can anyone even remember how?)

Play music cassettes? (And wind the spool with a Bic pen?)

Use a mobile phone with no camera? (And get carpal tunnel syndrome lifting one!)

Write cheques? (Only landlords seem to get excited receiving these?)

Own a ''box TV'' with no remote control? (the fitness levels we once had!)

Many still use cheques are still used mostly in business. As with fax machines for some reason. (really a virtual fax machine would be better that links into email. Although with encryption, email is better anyway). Letters of course another thing used in business. But most people don't seem to open their mail these days unless it is a package from Amazon.

As for "box TVs" or CRTs to normal people, they still have their place in the world for such as retro gamers etc. There are some things that LCD screens are rather bad at doing (and a bunch of useless post processing options that really have no place being there as they are useless ad just cause problems).

I'm still a bit set in my ways with things, I'll still call DVDs and Blu rays "videos" from time to time, and portable music players "walkmans".

It's a shame really that kids growing up today wont know what a floppy disc is, a cassette tape, or video tape.

But then again, they wont have all of those hassles we had with those formats.

  7. Don't delude yourself. What do you think will happen to the supply of private sector accommodation if (as Labour proposes) rent increases are capped, admin fees are abolished and tenants gain the right to demand a minimum AST of 3 years (rather than the current 6 months)?

    I'll explain what will happen:

    1. The supply of rented accommodation will shrink as many landlords decide it's just not worth it and sell up (good for first time buyers, but not for people who can't afford to buy).

    2. Those landlords who don't sell up will be even more picky about who they will allow to rent their property - if they can't get tenants out for 3 years, they are going to demand huge deposits, mega-glowing references, high credit check scores and guarantors. Anyone on benefits or a low income -however good a tenant they are - can forget it.

    3. Admin fees will simply be absorbed into rents, so rents will go up. Neither agents nor LLs are charities.

Most of those will be ex-council properties and should be given back.....

  8. Every time something happens enough for you to use your fingers, note down the bus number and time. There is a complaints form on the websites of the companies.

Use them. If enough complaints happen, drivers can be dealt with. (as long as they are not hiding behind unite)

  9. I think it is unique to have a yanky fellow down the moor. Adds a bit of something interesting to the Shopping day.

Not annoying at all really. Some people are just miserable sods :-P

Oh wow, a friend just sent me this! I had no idea this forum existed! Thanks for the laughs everyone! I really enjoyed it, lol. The meat puns seriously had me rolling, especially since I LOVE steak. Anyway, I'm actually the American dude, haha. Fret not though, if you've been in the Moor as of late, you need not worry about me, I got laid off. But the guy who replaced me is MUCH louder :) (You can hear him at Meadowhall LOL!) So I hope he treats you nice. Haha, just poking fun, but yeah, thanks for the good read everybody, sorry if I did irritate you too much, but I had to try and feed my wife somehow! Cheers everyone, thanks for putting up with me, lol.

Sorry to see you gone, dude. You added awesomeness to the shopping day :-)
