  1. Now look to your own future and learn from your memory's. What did happen, happened. It is now up to you, to get yourself into a position where it can never happen to someone else.
  2. Since Rachael Carson wrote ' The Silent Spring ' and the way she was treat by the governmental powers of the United States of America for writing the book. I have been, and always will be uncertain about using any chemical not verified in the U.K. as environmentally safe to use.
  3. QUOTE= ESCORT1 The ex school playing next to the now industrial estate was Allens farm. I remember as a kid all the pigs in the field. It would appear that (rogG's) Two Pigs were either told about about the Family Allowances that were to be introduced after the War or took thier que from him!! - So hence, ESCORT1 Post!!! The years that I'm refering to are 942 - 1944. If I remember correctly, Opposite Warley Road, directly across Manor Lane, but above the school. A rough track ran along the right-hand side of the school wall. on the left side was a few allotments. My Grand Father had one. If this track ran to the Farm, I never knew though I do know that a entrance to the farm was opposite the top of Granville Road on City Road.
  4. Are you writing about the farm that was close to * Stead's ) on the corner of Cricket Inn Road at the other end of Manor Lane?
  5. A young lad who suffered with Muscular Dystrophy was called Peter Cottam. My young Son who also had MD. was a friend of his whilst attending Oaks Park School, Norton, Sheffield. He was about 11 yrs old when he left his parents and the Hallam Branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Group during late 1970 early 1980s. From memory he lived with his parents on Bevan Way, Chapletown, Sheffield.
  6. Directly across city Road at its junction with Granville Road looking towards Wyborne with the back of the old school situated at the bottom of Manor Lane. A farm existed in the early 1940s. I think that they kept Pigs. Has anyone any confirmations or memorys?
  7. The name,' Downings ' rings a bell from a distant childhood memory. Thank you.
  8. I had a look into that.. here is a quote (January 2008 issue of WRAP’s Tyres newsletter): Working in conjunction with Nottinghamshire County Council, WRAP has already undertaken a successful trial at Clipstone in the Sherwood Forest area of Nottinghamshire. Feedback from user groups has been very positive, as the use of rubber is seen as offering a unique surfacing solution that meets the different needs of walkers, cyclists and horseriders alike. there is a file at http://www.wrap.org.uk/downloads/WRAP_rubber_Case_study.a3f0d803.pdf and the bottles and junk? it wasn't too heavy to bring, take it away again! let it decompose in a bin! Thank you for the link and I trust a lot of other people read the information. I'm intending to get out to Clip stone to have a look shortly. and the bottles and junk? it wasn't too heavy to bring, take it away again! let it decompose in a bin Regarding bottles & Polythene Etc. I can only wish that people would take the rubbish home, but they don't and that is the problem. I'm now interested in knowing if the chemical that is intended to be used in future in poly materials will bring indirectly, a greater problem than the one that exist at the moment. ( Out of sight, out of mind - Even if the wind blows it away, it still exist ). Another link to read: http://www.wrap.org.uk/document.rm?id=4943
  9. Was Fulwood Cottage Homes re-named Moor side when it because a remand centre for girls or is/was it a totally different place?
  10. May I suggest that you alter this commonsense post accordingly and e-mail it to ' Letters ' to the Star Newspaper. It will assist in re-assuring a number of readers who have read the article which they published.
  11. I can only hope someone else on the forum, who worked at the same firm during the time this was happening, comes along. I was transfered from the Clutch department to the Overdrive department, which was at a different location, very shortly after asbestosis was publicly recognized and the practice stopped. The firm frequently offered chest X-Ray to employees at regular approved intervals, but not many who worked on the shop floor were bothered to take up this opportunity. I meet someone who will remember more about this and come back with more information.
  12. Mrmark - Thank you for let me view your top quality video.
  13. Before the danger of asbestosis became general public knowledge we use to use asbestos dust on the floor to suck up spilt oil. This was in the Clutch Department of Laycock Engineering on Archer Road. The Asbestos came from the machining of the clutch plates. But I must be honest and state that I never knew of a worker catching or dying from Asbstosis. A number suffered with lung problems through smoking cigarrettes
  14. I've thought a great deal abut the Plastic or Polythene invasion onto the countryside. I understand that shortly a self destructive element will be built into the material will slowly dis-integrate the material. What then will happen to the chemical that does this job, I haven't heard yet. Could someone add to this please? I heard sometime ago that to combat erosion of Footpaths & Bridleways. Someone had created a experimental, surfacing material using shredded car lyre's. I believe a trail patch was to be used at Clip-stone, Notts. Has anyone got a update on this please.
  15. A few years ago, the person who was basically responsible for the Peak District National Park coming into existence, suggested that because of the anticipated user volume, especially at weekends, that a registration scheme should be given thought. The idea being to have a set limit to the number of people using certain areas of the National Park. At the time this was realistically discussed. Now having had the experience of comparing the erosion of footpaths along with the arrogant behavior of many walkers and cyclist. I am now minded to think it is time to give this idea serious thought. I must add regarding dogs. My idea of taking my dog a walk on the moors is to let him have a good run off the lead. By the time he is old enough to go such a walk he should be trained sufficiently to do what he is told and sheep should not attract him. If they do, he should get immediate corrective treatment to ensure that he never looks at them again in the same way. Simply because it could cost him his life. Regarding dog muck. No one likes walking into a pile, but its all part of growing up. It's been around for a few years now and until fairly recently, no one was concerned too much.
  16. At the top end of Norfolk Park in my younger days (1940) I'm almost sure that a farm existed. Has anyone got any information about it, please? My gran-mother lived on Warley Road and I believe that when the farmer delivered her milk. He used a horse and trap/cart. The milk was served out of one of two churns by using a long handled ladle and poured into a big pot jug that she used. I once broke the handle off this and I recieved a right walloping!! I don't think the my Gran, had ever read Dr Spock!!
  17. Can you now claim for any financial loss due to them not keeping the appointment? I read somewhere that this was being introduced to make sub-contractors more responsible to Tennant's. I suggest that you contact your area housing office and ask. I can't imagine that this problem will effect Council Housing only, I minded to think that all housing could be effected. How can you tell if asbestos in built into your home?
  18. Can anyone remember how much did it cost to go in to the dance on a Saturday?
  19. The remark should be investigated a Charity Commission nominee. This will either confirm it or not.
  20. First - My apologies for not meeting you. I hope to see you next time round. I never understood the Smith's connection. I have always assumed that they were the owners of the block of shops. Where does the Smith's Industries fit in? or does it? Can you remember Percy Picker who owned the Carpet shop?
  21. Setting property values and Council tax charged today against the property values and rateable values of twenty five years ago. I would not be surprised if we actually paid less today. But back to cutting the grass, I feel sure that the roadside verges were kept neater a few years ago. If something looks neater usually people prefer it that way. Regarding parking on the grass roadside verge. I believe councils should issue parking tickets for the privilege of parking on community land, returning the charges collected, back to improve the same community with such as the provision of lay-bye's.
  22. As to Albert's rant about him as a labour candidate for council whilst exercising an RTB (introduced by the Tories and against labour policy) I note his hypocrisy in that at the time he was standing on a platform of no sales of council housing whilst at the same time buying his own, although I have to say he was not alone in this hypocrisy as virtually every labour member did exactly the same thing. I did wonder how long this garbage would be left in the slime pot!! ( My web is awaiting the flies )
  23. My understanding regarding every charity is that they must be in the position to produce the minutes for inspection at any reasonable time. I believe a reasonable charge can be made to enable them to be read or viewed. If you wish the charity to provide copies a charge will be made. The charge can be adjudicated by the charity commission if excessive. The Charity Commission will have information on their web site regarding this. If you have the charities registered number that could be useful.
  24. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's ! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer. Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Nandos. Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death! We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because...... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears! We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time... We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays, We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet! RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully'salways ruled the playground at school. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla' We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were. PS -The big type is because your eyes are not too good at your age anymore Can anyone add to this?
  25. I believe that if the council have inspected the road within a Six months period and have put cautionary Yellow marking around anything as a warning to users of that highway. That that releases them from any legal obligations to those who use that highway. Can anyone clarify this please? Note: The former pot holes that I've posted pictures off, are still holding up well.
