VAT up to 20 percent. Does it matter really?
Tooeg replied to Dennistist's topic in General Discussions
The whole process of moving food about in lorries is VAT neutral. although VAT is charged on the fuel the haulier claims it back. The VAT on the haulage charge is also claimed back. So the extra VAT is not charged to the consumer. The only people who miss out on fuel VAT are private motorists and small businesses not recovering VAT -
Looking at a map of Sheffield earlier this week I saw Summerfield as the area in Broomhill, bordered by Glossop Rd. Ashdell Rd. and Fulwood Rd. I'd never heard of it. Also Port Mahon. This was around the top of Oxford St.

Do you travel up to London or down to London

I'm very proud of Sheffield's heritage and want to see the steelworks prosper. Don't get sucked into the idea that only Sheffield can make steel. Why would something built by Johnny Foreigner be any less reliable than something made in the east. Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Samsung, Tata (now make steel in Stocksbridge). The truth is now out, the management saw Mandelson as a soft touch for a government loan. Without the guarantees or share dilution the banks wanted. If the management are as set on this development as we are given to believe, then no doubt they will revert to plan B.

I recall the name Ditchfield but can't remember when and where. I'm originally from walkley that may be the connection. The little grey cells need a nudge.

Anyone remember the Sunderland Social Club

On my few visits I was with Mick Cowan, so never a problem with the clientel. -
There was a sunday school teacher at Ebenezer Chapel Mr Winfield, He worked at one of the theatres in Sheffield. Would it be his daughter, red head.
-
How long have you been in the states. We don't graduate from school in England. We just leave. Ann Winfield was in my class. She lived on Heavygate Ave. I think. Was Judy her older sister?

I was there from probably '53 to '60 I left after 11 plus. My brother was there about '50 to '58 I think. My younger brother about '58 to '65 Headmaster was Mr Henstock upto about '58 then Mr Hughes Miss Bryant and Miss Wright had both taught my dad and uncle in the thirties. We were always being compared to them. When were you there USUK

Be careful, I seem to remember some of them have Asbestos in the filter.

If the project is so good why aren't forgemasters going to the bank for the money. Or would it have been a loan which in 5 years time would be written off when the business was restructured. Good labour economics. The investment would apparently have created 180 jobs. At nearly half a million pounds per job, there must be more worthwhile investments.

Yes that was my first guess but it didn't get a reaction from Vernon, so I don't think that's it. There's also the old Greens on Trippet lane. I saw people in there a couple of weeks ago.
-
I saw Vernon the other day in All Bar One. I was ribbing him about his new place but he wouldn't tell me where, two minutes walk he said. Same style but bigger with food was all he'd say. I think there was a bit of a delay because of planning and licensing problems.

After they gave up the grocery life, Glynn had the large boat sales place at Unstone for quite a few years. ( handy for the sea?)

Was there a potato merchant named Fantozzi at the top of Woodhouse rd. on the left as you turned from Mansfield rd. I remember the sign 30 or 40 years ago

We will be sitting at home looking at Doncaster, which we will have renamed The Beach -
Was his nickname Slick. Billy Sales was a blast from the past. They were both 2/3 years older than me at Bole Hill

Have you heard of these sayings ?
Tooeg replied to Mrs Overall's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Reading these posts, where people have used t' to show the unsaid the. We all know what it means but a none Yorkie over pronounces it. A better way would be to stick a t' on the end of the previous word hence roundt' lump would better express what we are trying to say. I don't use the expression "I've just run roundt' lump" anymore now I say, "I drove roundt' lump" -
As they also make Worcester sauce, I'm guessing they bought the original local yorkshire relish manufacturer out at some time

As a kid in the fifties I think we had a bottle of Yorkshire Relish. Was this Hendersons or is it simply a figment of my imagination.

It was the Sunderland Social Club, I was taken there after hours by Mick Cowan who did the knock on the door bit, like something out of the godfather.
