  2. Try booting from a linux Distro/ Live CD My old Compaq with a Microsoft Expericence rating of 2, and Ubuntu 11.04 (32-bit) takes approximately 3 minutes to get to the "Try" screen and a further 50 seconds to get to the "desktop", from which I can navigate around the hard drive with relative ease. 10. May I suggest you get your daughter a computer with a decent sized screen say 15.6 inches. Netbooks are really designed for business people who attend meetings and give Power-point presentations. Some people think it’s really cool to own one but in reality they are just hard work to use. What you don't want is to be squinting at a small screen with even smaller text giving yourself and your daughter eyestrain. John Lewis have a Toshiba Satellite C660-125 Laptop for £320 including 2 years guarantee. You could also get a wireless mouse for £20, it will make the computer experience a whole lot better. Mike

  12. I use CCleaner setup such that it deletes the contents of < C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp >. I run CCleander daily. There appears to be a lot of stuff collected in the <AppData> folder by various applications some of which is important. Be careful when deleting items in this area. Anything you delete is down to you and nobody else! Mike

  15. According to Microsoft you cannot downgrade from 64-bit to 32-bit (or upgrade) it requires a clean installation. You should also ensure you have the appropriate 32-bit hardware drivers. see the link below http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions Mike

  18. I moved from Pipex to BT August 2010, The line speed was getting slower and slower, and Pipex customer service was vitually none-existant. The only good thing I can say is the connection never dropped out. I was with them for about 5 years. TalkTalk (who aquired Pipex) phone me every couple of months with a "Special" deal, I ask them not to phone but they take no-notice. I recently had a sales-rep knock on the door, saying he would like to test my phone line to see if it was good enough to be connected to their high-speed service. He did not say he was from TalkTalk that infomation took several minutes to extract from him. So beware of pimpled faced little gits wanting to enter your home and test the phone line. I realise I'm paying a bit of a premium to BT but the connection speed is usually in exess of 6Mb/sec ( I live in Crookes and the exchange is at Broomhill ) and I can get to talk to someone even if they are on another continent. Regards Mike
  19. Hi Everyone, I have just had a phone call from the 'Accident Investigation Bureau' wanting to know about the accident I have had. But I have not had an accident I replied, The response was has anyone in your household had an accident within the last 2 years. This is clearly some form of phone scam. The caller also with held his number. Does anyone know who to report this sort of call too? Mike

  24. On Townend Street (S10), a new Give Way sign has been installed, presumably because the original had changed colour from the red/white to black/white probably caused by bleaching of the sun. So have the council removed the original sign? NO. Townend Street now has two give way signs the first is about 15 inches behind the second. Sheffield is littered with disused street furniture that requires digging up and taking away and the pavement surface making good.
  25. For general surfing and email PC World have the Advent 6301 for less than £400 You should expect it to last 3 years and then buy a replacement Regards Mike
