  1. It would have been his friends and relatives who would have arranged the funeral, not him.
  2. The border with Belarus would be the closest I think, followed by Latvia and Ukraine, but all a fair distance. I would have thought that the border with Ukraine would be bristling with Russian military surveillance installations and personnel so not the best direction to head. All speculation at this stage anyway.
  3. I often walk past this house and have wondered what the story is. The peeling paint on the upstairs window frames is a shade of green that says 1940s to me.
  4. I remember the gold taxi atop Mr Compensator on Abbeydale Road.
  5. It looks breezy up there this morning. https://peregrine.sites.sheffield.ac.uk/
  6. I'm not disputing that a plaque would be a fitting tribute, but even if one had been laid, it seems there's still no guarantee that you, personally, would have heard about it.
  7. Maybe you were 'out to lunch' in 2019? https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/people/sheffields-man-with-a-pram-john-burkhill-awarded-freedom-of-the-city-430977 https://sheffnews.com/news/freedom-of-city-john-burkhill
  8. Wouldn't seeing a blue plaque bearing the name of someone you hadn't heard of before pique your interest? It would mine.
  9. Blue plaques aren't only about celebrating "famous" people. They go beyond that. https://historicengland.org.uk/whats-new/news/national-blue-plaques-scheme/ "Recent polling has revealed that 84% of people in England think it is important that people pass on stories of local history, and place-marking initiatives such as the blue plaques scheme can increase levels of civic pride and positive connections to place, and encourage a sense of belonging."
  10. "they"? Isn't this story about just one twenty-year-old bloke, not the entire population of Liverpool?
  11. Paloma is Spanish for "Dove". Kommune is Norgwegian for "Municipality".
  12. I'm lucky then, because with my neighbours, whoever gets to the emptied bins first, puts them back in place. A tacit arrangement.
  13. The only times I've been to Magna is to meet up with a friend from over Rotherham way (me travelling from Sheffield), so a tram stop at Magna could be ideal for us. True, that only makes for two passengers.
  14. Once the Moorfoot to Meadowhead Maglev is up and running, we won't need the tram, and, as it will all be built on piers, there'll be no major issue with finding groundspace for the termini.
  15. I used to walk past the chippie on Commercial Street on my way into town in the 90s. I never went in but think it was called Tony's. It sticks in my mind because I found the beef dripping smell rather revolting.
  16. It was whisky for me too, but only because for a number of years I'd only tried the blends my dad used to drink. Then, when I could afford to buy my own, I discovered single malts – the peaty, smoky ones from Islay – and there was no looking back. I also love jalapeños, as do others on this thread, but have done so from the first time I tried them, so they they aren't exactly an 'acquired taste" for me.
  17. Nope. "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead."
  18. Haha! An oldie but goodie.
  19. A woman I once saw apprehended by security in Morrisons had plastic-wrapped joints of meat shoved down her jogging bottoms.
  20. In September 2021 the then Tory Prime Minister, Johnson, announced that National Insurance contributions would rise by 1.25 percentage points to pay for the social care system in England. https://news.sky.com/story/pm-announces-1-25-national-insurance-hike-to-pay-for-social-care-in-england-12401278 "National Insurance contributions will rise by 1.25% to pay for the social care system in England in a bid to end the "unpredictable and catastrophic costs" faced by many." Given that the Tory Government since then reduced the National Insurance rate by two percentage points in January this year, and now intends another two percentage points drop from April this year, does that mean that our social care system is now fully funded, or do the many still face "unpredictable and catastrophic costs"?
  21. Given your personal experience, I understand the stance you take.
