  1. I sat near the window overlooking the playground. Needless to say my concentration wavered a bit when the girls were doing PE. Happy days
  2. Never will forget playing with friends on Deerlands Ave. Best of all playing Cowboys and Indians on the back fields where I lived 3 houses up from Black Hill, Holgate Cres. . ( sadly house where I lived along with many others have been demolished ). Memories of playing in the cornfields in the 50's after the corn had been cut. That was until they made the fields into Parson Cross park.
  3. I worked at PWD 1970-74. As I remember the HQ was at Olive Grove Road. I worked in a team spraying Aerocem (or something like that) on the houses. I used to along with another chap (Barnie Grubb and a couple more men ) scaffolding and cleaning around the windows after the walls had been sprayed. If you worked within a distance from Olive Grove you didn't get travelling expenses. But over that limit you did. For a few months I was with a gang working round the manor. I lived in Hillsboro. at the time. So I didn't get any expenses.
  4. I was at Southey Green School 1956/1961. Always remember seeing nuns at Patmos house (If it was called that name then). When we came out of school(4pm) the nuns would sometimes talk to us.
  5. I went to Southey Green Secondary Modern School 1956-1961. Head master was Mr (Pop) Kay. I have been through both topics about best Headmasters and poor old Mr Kay has not been mentioned. Not surprised really. He was like a little Hitler. Funny really none of the teachers are mentioned in the Best Teachers Topics either. Enough said.
  6. Anyone remember the shops that used to be on Lindsay Avenue 1950's. first shop was Hirst's. They had a daughter Josephine I think here name was. Was at Lindsey Road School with her. Bottom shop was Co-op. In between there was a chip shop, paper shop Burgoyne's I think the name was. Cannot remember the others
  7. Nowadays you just get a letter sent home with all the kids. Announcing that that there are nits on the prowl. You used to get some lotion from the chemist for free, but this government put a stop to that.
  8. Anyone remember building dens. On the fields back of Deerlands Ave 1950's
  9. It is useful if you know dates of birth. Where people were born. Any relatives you my know of. There are other ancestry sites eg. My Heritage. Find My Past. To name two. My Heritage also offer a 14 day trial. It may be a good idea to wait until January when the 1921 Census become available Good luck
  10. Coming out of the Essoldo pictures Barnsley Road. Getting fish / fishcakes and chips in newspaper from Hunts. Walking home to where we livid in Deerlands Ave. Also after watching pictures at the Paragon Firth Park. Going across road to the chippie. Eating them waiting for number 1 bus.
  11. At school a girl sat in front of me (no names). If she ever read this she would know. One day the teacher was writing on the chalk board, very boring. I could see this clip under the girls shirt. With one hand I undid the bra. The girl gave out a shriek. I was sent to see the head master. Got six of the cane on both hands.
  12. I only went to that youth Club, I lived in Deerlands Ave from birth in 1946 to getting married in 1966. I then lived in Hillsborough.
  13. It was never known as Southey Green Youth Club. I used to go to the youth club late 1950's until around 1961. I attended Lindsey Road School from nursery around 1948 through to leaving in 1957 to go to Southey Green Comprehensive School. All the huts (as you call them) were classrooms. The hut where the youth club used to be held was just a hall where we used to have PT (physical training) in the winter. Myself and some of my classmates used to put on little shows for the other kids. It was a great school, I didn't want to leave but off course had to when I reached the age of 11. When I went to the youth club it was a great meeting place. We danced to all the then modern music, played games, table tennis, darts, snooker (in another part of the hall). It was a great place. It was never a mods or rockers place at that time.
  14. Do you mean the youth club wat was in Lindsey Road junior school
  15. I worked there in 1964/5 It was hard work and you started and finished bang on the start and finishing times. I worked first on the machines taking clay bricks off the machines and filling the barrows up. Then filling the top of the kilns with coal.
  16. Hi 56cheffy. Nothing to do with your Aunt. My laptop does not have a cd player' I bought one off ebay that attaches by wire to the USB socket. Works just great. Didn't cost a fortune either under £20 . Just a suggestion.
  17. I am new to this thread. The first Doctor I can remember was Dr Botros. Apparently when I was very young (1946/7) I developed pneumonia. My Mom always told me that Dr Botros saved my life. I think he had a surgery a couple of houses above the (then ) Essoldo picture house on Barnsley Road down from Sheffield Lane Top. Up to me getting married in 1966 I used to go to the same surgery, but cannot remember who the Doctor was.
  18. I'm same as you Ant68 that many replies on here. But here goes. Lindsay Road Junior School, Also Lindsay Road Nursery and Infants. Nursery to leaving Juniors 1951-1957

  21. Ii am an old friend of Brian's from childhood when we both lived in Deerlands Ave. My wife was friends with Carol from childhood also. they both lived in Hillsboro. You are right Carol and Brian are divorced. They met when through my now wife and I when we were courting back in 1963/4. Carol is in Scotland and Brian is in Spain.
