  1. I had both my hips replaced 3 years ago with a 2 month gap between each operation. Elected for an epidural - or spinal block as it is sometimes known -each time along with a sedative. This puts you in to a deep sleep - I felt and heard nothing. Recovery time is much quicker that with a general anaesthetic. I'm sure you'll be fine.

  2. As the title says really. I'd like to buy these in Sheffield if at all possible rather than order over the internet. I see that there was a similar thread a couple of years ago and that a couple of outlets in Castle market were mentioned. Does anyone know if any of these businesses have transferred to the Moor market or of any other shops that may sell them?

  3. My son has just had a fence erected. The wood has already been "treated" and he quite likes the colour as it is. So my question is this - does anyone know where we could buy a clear fence preservative - preferably one that can be sprayed on? The only clear stuff we can see is for decking and it is very expensive compared to the other types that most people use, you know, the coloured variety such as green or various shades of brown. Hope someone out there can help.

  4. Hi Sue,

Just picked up your reply (my registration on Sheffield Forum keeps dropping)

I sort of remember Les - did you ever go up to the allotments with him (or us)

However my Dad is 87 next weekend so we will be calling in to see him and I'll

    ask if he remembers anything.

You will have left Cottingham Street when I was 6 - where did you end up ?

    cheers,

    Derrick

    Hi Derrick

I'm about to 'pm' you - if I can manage it!

    Sue

  5. Hi Rose

Nope, the "Marian Richardson Script " means nothing to me so that must have been after I left in 1959. Also wanted to let you know that I've managed to post the school photo but it's in the " History and Expats " section under " Woodburn School ". Take a look and let me know if you're on it. Are you the girl with ringlets stood in the third row back by any chance ? Let me know if there are any names you remember that we haven't already mentioned.

    Regards

    Sue

    Hi Sue

It was actually Eileen Cooper (not Diane), my mistake. However I remember Diane Stewart, we met up at a party about five years ago which was held by Janet Palmer's parents for their wedding anniversary, Diane and Janet were childhood friends.

I remember Andrea Cook and I am sorry to hear that she has passed away, even after not seeing people for all those years it is still upsetting to hear news like this.

Do you remember learning 'Marion Richardson Script' in school, I remember all the class being provided with a Marion Richardson pen which had a square type nib which was dipped in ink. Its strange how some memories seem to stick out in your mind.

    Regards

    Rose

  6. Here is my class school photo taken around 1956 or 1957. Miss Hill was the head mistress and I think the name of the teacher was Miss Smith. I left the school in 1959 so there are only a handful of names that I can recall. Some of you may recognise yourself or maybe your mums and dads - or even grandparents I suppose !! My name then was Susan Watson. I am on the second row, 5th from the left with my hands tucked between my knees. Oh happy days !

  7. Hi Susan

Although I remember the Bulldog pub I don't remember the dancing session there. Perhaps if you left the school in 1959 you may not remember me as we would have only been 8 years old and I went on to Woodbourne Road Juniors. I certainly remember your name but I just can't place your face. It would be nice to see the photo if you could put it on forum. Do you see any of the old pupils at all?, I often see Diane Cooper off Roundel Street, she had the most beautiful long, naturally blond hair.

    Regards

    Rose Hadi

    Hi Rose

Diane Cooper doesn't ring a bell but Diane Stewart does. She lived at the top of Worthing Road and I played with her a lot. I don't think she is on the photo either. The only person I kept in touch with was a girl called Andrea Cook - married name Powell. She was the eldest of four and had a brother called Alan and a sister called Julie. I even went to her wedding but we lost touch. Then out of the blue, many years later, we met up again at Slimming World! We exchanged Christmas cards thereafter. I then found out by chance that she had died of pancreatic cancer - this was just over 2 years ago. She hadn't mentioned that she was ill in her last card. I went to the funeral at Handsworth church and it was standing room only. Lots of Beatles songs were played and it was a very moving ceremony.

    Regards

    Sue

  8. Hello again Rosemarie

I didn't go on the school trip to London so that must have happened after I left which was around June/July 1959. One thing I do remember attending was some kind of dancing session which was held upstairs in a pub which I think was called the Bulldog? Do you remember that at all? I'll ask my son if he can put the photo on here so you can have a look at it.

    Take care

    Sue

    Hi Susan

Its so strange listening to those names again, I remember everyone that you mentioned. I particularly remember Anne Carey because she was picked on quite a bit. This was definitely my year so I can't think why I wasn't on the photo. Do you ever remember going on a school holiday to London, we stayed in a youth hostel and slept in bunk beds? I can remember Anne Carey sleeping on the top bunk above the teacher.

If you sat next to Christine Wawzyniak (you're right about the spelling) we were definitely in the same year. I used to walk home with her after school along with Janet Palmer because we all lived on the same route.

A couple of weeks ago whilst in Crystal Peaks with my mun I was stopped by a man who I had noticed was looking at me and it was Trevor Morris, he remembered me from all those years and it wasn't until I really looked at him that I recognized him. He was actually a friend of my brother Joseph and he gave me his number to pass on to Joe so they could meet and talk about old times.

Can any of this jog your memory Susan, I hope so.

    Regards

    Rosemarie

  9. Hello Derrick

I remember your name and that of your brother as your dad and mine used to go up to the allotments together. I also remember that your dad had very dark hair. In fact, I still have a couple of gardening books somewhere that were given to me as Christmas presents by your mum and dad. They have a written inscription along the lines of "Merry Christmas Susan from Jonathan and Derrick". My name then was Susan Watson and my dad was called Les. We lived on Cottingham Street until 1959. I wonder if either of you remember me?

Hi jackygells - we were at no 22 from 1951 to 62 - the Guys - Alf, Renee, Jonathan and me (Derrick)

  10. Hi Susan

I was born in May so I was in the same year as you, I remember Diane, Martin and David and some more names are Janet Palmer, Pat Turner, Susan Johnson, Rita Pearson. Christine Vavjenak, Elaine Kania, Margaret Briggs, Andrea Thompson and Elaine Warren, Trevor Morris and Ian Willetts. You went on to Pipworth Road but I went on to Beaver Hill so you wouldn't know some of the names I mentioned previously.

I am Rosemarie Hadi (or Rose), I am half arab so you may remember me by my black curly hair and I was very skinny (although you wouldn't believe it now), I have four brothers and the one next to me was Joseph who was in the year below us, does this ring any bells. The school put on a musical and I played the queen in 'The Marquis of Carabass', Melvyn Howe played the king and Janet Palmer played the princess.

    Hi Rosemarie

Sorry it's been a few days since I last contacted you. You know, I don't remember your black curly hair at all but then it is over 50 years ago! I've found the photo I referred to earlier and I don't think you are on it. I remember the names Rita Pearson, Trevor Morris, Ian Willetts and Christine Vavjenak - which I think was spelt something like Wawzyniak. In fact I sat next to Christine at one point. Here are the names of some of the people I remember from the photo - you'll have to let me know if they mean anything to you. Here goes then - Linda Gibson, Geoffrey Harding (?), Jill Turner, Anne Carey, Joyce Simmonite, Hazel Armstrong, Diane Wheatley, Stephen Capill and John Whiteley. I also remember someone called Brenda Marriott because she went to the City Grammar school from Woodbourn Road but she isn't on the photograph either. I wonder if there were two classes for our age group - I can't remember. It really is good to be able to think back over half a century.

  11. I didn't realise until very recently that you are able to drop off repeat prescriptions at both Rowlands and Lloyds. Simply hand it in to a member of staff. They take it up to the centre to be authorised and fetch it back for you. Then they process it in their shop and you collect it later - just remember to ask them to give you an idea when it's likely to be ready. What could be simpler than that? My experiences at having to wait at the medical centre pharmacy were not good at all.

  12. I remember your name Susan but I can't place your face, do you remember me?

Yes I remember Mrs Gleadhill and I think the other teacher was Miss Smith. Did you go onto Beaver Hill after leaving Woodbourne Road? About three years ago I was contacted by Joyce Fairchild who was arranging a reunion, I went and there were a few blasts from the past, it's really weird seeing past faces all these years on. Do you remember Susan Hancock, she apparently lives in Cyprus. It was sad to hear at the reunion that Joan Bishop has sadly passed on and so has Lynne Beet. I went along with Felicity Jackson as we have still kept in touch all these years.

    Hello again

I'm in the same boat as you ! The name Rose does ring a distant bell but I can't remember your face either. I know we were both born in 1951 but there is still a possibility the we were in different school years. I was born in April but if you were born from August/September onwards you would have been in the year below me. I left in 1959 when we moved from my nan's house. I then went to Pipworth Road Junior school and from there to the City Grammar - that was in 1962. Once there at least 3 pupils from Woodbourn Road joined me and they were Diane Littlewood, Martin Adshead and David Eblett. If none of those names ring a bell I guess we probably were in different years. I did enjoy those first few years at infant school.

  13. Hi SueW

I was born in 1951 and I also remember Susan Grimshaw's sad passing, I can still picture her with her long brown plaits. I also remember Miss Hill and do you remember Mr Mallaband, the headmaster of Woodbourne School.

I lived on the corner of Ferneough street and Staniforth Road, this was replaced by shopacheck.

    Hi RoseHadi

Yes I do remember Mr Mallaband and Mrs Gleadhill who was the reception class teacher. I think the teacher, whose name I couldn't remember the other day, may have been Miss Smith. My mum was a bit of a hoarder and I still have some schoolwork from the 1950's. I suppose the fact that I've held on to it makes me just as bad! Do you remember learning about "Nanook of the north"? If you view my posts you will see that I recently recalled the names of a few of my old classmates. My name then was Susan Watson. Funnily enough I don't live a million miles from where you are now.

  14. I remember the name Whiteley and think that John is on the photograph. Was he quite small for his age when he was around 6 or 7? If so the picture shows him sat on the floor, cross-legged with a very gummy grin as a lot of his front teeth are missing !! I shall have to ask my son if it's possible to post this picture on the foram. I am worse than useless at anything like that. By the way our house number was 158. Nice to hear from you !

  15. I lived on Cottingham Street and went to Woodbourn Road school until 1959. I also remember Susan Grimshaw and the shock of her passing away. She may have been in my year at school and could even be on an old class photo I have which probably dates back to around 1956. Miss Hill is there along with a teacher whose name escapes me but I think she emigrated to Australia. I was born in 1951 so if anyone on the forum was born around that time we were probably in the same school year and it would be great to hear your memories too.

  16. I'm so pleased that this thread has re-surfaced as I wasn't using the internet when the original message was posted in 2006. Well here goes - I went to Woodbourn Road school from 1955 to 1959 - which was when we moved out of the area. I lived at 158 Cottingham Street, near to the corner of Jessell Street. Some names I remember are Diane Stewart (who lived at the top of Worthing Road ), Ann Carey, Jill Turner, Hazel Armstrong and Diane Littlewood. Also David Eblet, Jonathan Whiteley and brother & sister Derek and Davina Hird. I have a class photo which must have been taken around 1956 and I can still remember lots of the faces but most of the names escape me. I think Mrs Gledhill was my very first teacher and I remember sitting next to a girl called Christine with a Polish surname - something similar to Wawzyniak. My name then was Susan Watson. It would be lovely to hear from anyone who remembers me.

  17. If you haven't already bought your cards why not check out the card shop on Trippet Lane - adjacent to the Scout and Guide shop? The stalls used to be in the Sheffield Cathedral but have moved this year. You can buy an array of stuff as well as the cards. Lots of charities are represented including several local ones such as St Lukes, Western Park cancer hospital and Whirlow Park Trust. You'll be doing your bit but most important of all, if you buy the cards from this shop approximately 90 pence in the pound goes to the nominated charity. I don't know about you but I think that is absolutely fabulous.

  18. We have just had several scuff marks and one small, but quite deep dent, removed from our silver Golf estate by a company called Xtreme Bodyworx. They are located at 219-221 Penistone Road S6 3AS adjacent to Mecca Bingo. Their work was fantastic - a real professional job at a very reasonable price. We feel that we're driving around in a brand new car ! Our son's car is going in at the beginning of August. Tel 07713 224884 ( Andy ) or 07971 709296 ( Mick )

  19. You should try J C Bird on Surrey Street - near the Town Hall. Someone recommended them to me several years ago when my specs had broken. I went in and Mr Bird himself repaired them for me for free - even though I'd never set foot in the place. Good old customer service goes a long way. I've been there ever since for my glasses and contact lenses and so has my husband and son.

  20. For a "proper good restaurant" you should try the Venus at Dinnington which is situated between Sheffield and Rotherham. The food is second to none and the restaurant and staff take some beating too. Not sure about the live entertainment though although this was provided once upon a time. I think two people can still dine on three courses ( with full silver service as standard ) for less than £30 Monday to Thursday. Check out their website - the place is definitely worth a visit. I've posted a message about this restaurant before.
