  1. I agree and that's why Sustrans Rangers have put signs at each end of the tram stop asking people to walk across the tram stop. These are not cyclists by the way, they are "knobs on bikes". Having said that the council could have put in a safe level cycle route when they created South Street Park but they failed to do so, preferring to put in heavily graded routes to Park Hill and the Cholera Monument.
  2. For as long as it continues I suppose. If you cast your mind back to the last Labour administration the homeless and street drinking problems had pretty much disappeared. That's because there were programmes in place to deal with it. Osborne slashed all those and this is the the result. Which is not to say their policies were perfect - Google "new labour approach to homelessness" and judge for yourself whether they were winning the battle. The action against the tree protesters relates to the PFI contract that the council got itself locked into - not the council's finest hour but a different issue.
  3. If you want to help the homeless, please donate to one of the charities who are actively working to get people off the streets - there are plenty, just Google 'em. Don't give money directly to beggars, of course they will spend it on drugs - if I was living on the street I'd want to be out of it as much as possible. You can't rely on the council to deal with the problem, all of their services have been slashed by Tory cuts.
  4. Hi philyyy, Sustrans Volunteer rangers do occasional litter picks - you can see details of the last one we did at http://sustranssheffield.blogspot.co.uk/ If you PM me I'll let you know an email address you can notify to when you're doing a clean-up - some of the rangers might come along. Generally I do use the council's reporting form to report litter - https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads/report.html
  5. The route is signposted through Wharncliffe Woods - look for the Trans-Pennine Trail or National Cycle Network signs. ---------- Post added 30-06-2014 at 14:17 ---------- If you go to http://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/cyclists/map-for-cyclists/ there's a link through to the Google map for the trail.
  6. Brake is hardly shadowy. Have a look at their website http://www.brake.org.uk/ The survey was done in conjunction with Allianz insurance, hardly a shadowy organisation either, and conducted by surveygoo whose credentials look to be pretty good. The main organisation pressing for a default 20mph limit where people live is 20s Plenty for Us, headed up by Rod King MBE, and the local branch is 20s Plenty for Sheffield.
  7. It is going to Rotherham - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-18100674
  8. Anyone know what the big fire is in the city centre at the moment?
  9. Just to let you know that Sustrans Rangers will be holding a clean-up event, 10-4 on 11th May, meeting in the Travelodge Car Park. If anyone would like to join us that would be grand. More details: Meet in the Travelodge car park off Prince of Wales Rd, 10a.m. It's OK to park there and we can use toilets in the nearby garage. Cycle Route: Follow NCN6 to Station from Broomspring Lane, continue to Park Square, then follow NCN627 to Rother Valley. (6m) Bus: Number 22 bus towards Woodhouse from Moorfoot, stand MF9 to Manor, CASTLEBECK AVENUE/Prince of Wales Road. 6 minute walk along Prince of Wales Rd to Travelodge. Leave09:33 Manor, CASTLEBECK AVENUE/Prince of Wales Road, 37023230 Arrive09:39 Sheffield Service Area,Travelodge Hotels Ltd, 340, Prince Of Wales Road, Sheffield, S2 1FF It's a full day event (10-4) so we can get as much as possible done in one day, but if you can only come for an hour or two, that's fine. If you've got litter-pickers, bin bags etc bring 'em along. Bring a packed lunch or buy sandwiches from the nearby garage. Please let me know by DM if you'd like to join in.
  10. Not quite a contraflow lane, a two-way cycle track on a one-way street.
  11. The Cumberland St Bus Gate doesn't prevent anyone from driving into the city centre - the car parks are elsewhere and you use different roads to access them. The selfish people who abuse them are just rat-running so they can get out of town faster, not going shopping.
  12. Sustrans Rangers are having a busy weekend this weekend, so I thought we'd better let as many people as possible know what's going on. On Saturday the 4th, we have a clean-up at the Manor Way access point to the National Cycle Network. We'd like get local people out and get as many people on the case as possible, so if you live locally, why not come along? If you have access to local community groups please let them know about this. Meet at the green space at Manor Way, at 10a.m and we aim to be off-site by 2. If additional litter-picking equipment is needed please let me know as I can loan this from Parks and Woodlands. There will be monthly clean-ups and rides on the NCN throughout the spring and summer on the first Monday of the month and I have a mailing list for interested parties. On Sunday 5th, we are anticipating that the Bridge lift for the Connect2 scheme will take place at 10 a,m. For a bike ride to the site meet at Rother Valley Country Park cafe at 09:30. There are limited viewing facilities on-site so we anticipate that we may have to watch from afar. After the Bridge Lift, there will be a Sustrans Ranger ride to Rotherham following the NCN Route. From Rotherham there will be a walking (bike pushing) route inspection of the route from Rotherham to Meadowhall. Owners of folding bikes can catch the 0834 Tram from Cathedral/stops in between to Halfway, arriving Halfway at 0909 (de-tram at Waterthorrpe for a traffic-free route to Rother Valley.) Otherwise it's a one-hour ride out on NCN6/67. There's plenty of c*r parking at Rother Valley of course. The best that the weather people can tell us for the weekend so far is that it's likely to be cold so wrap up warm! For more info about Sustrans see www.sustrans.org.uk and locally: http://sustranssheffield.blogspot.com/
  13. A guy called Dave Baillie is working with Vernon and does repairs as well as carrying a small stock of spares, so Dronfield's pretty much covered. There isn't a bike shop in the Ecclesall Rd area or Broomhill though apart from La Bicicleta http://www.labicicleta.co.uk/ who are pretty up-market so if you could find somewhere cheap enough round there you might have found a gap in the market.
