  1. Thanks for that Heartshome, but I just built on your work to be fair. I've found a tree on Ancestry that has Annie's GG Grandchildren on ...it appears to be a very competent tree, I'll contact the owner asap. I've also found a newspaper snippet with photo of J A Siddall...unfortunately Postimage is playing up at the moment. https://imgur.com/5DJYFKC
  2. He was Pvt 241059 J A Siddall ,Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles). He rose to acting Corporal and was reported missing on 25/3/1918. and was the subject of a Red Cross search. He was previously 24200, York & Lancaster Rgt.
  3. Amy Siddall born 1887, was still at her father's Nottingham Cliff address in the 1921 Census. She married the lodger Ernest Lyinas Lowe in 1924. In 1939 all three were living at 38 Crowland Road. There doesn't appear to be any children. Annie Siddall b 1883, married Joseph Edwin Lomas in 1910....interestingly the witnesses were Bertha Siddall and Herman Kramer. It looks as though they had at least one daughter...Constance Mary born in 1911. Constance Mary marries Cornelius W Wakefield in 1935. It seems a strong possibility they had Catherine M Wakefield in 1948. Catherine M may well marry a Stephen W Davies in 1969.
  4. The nice words on the paper were written whilst several million pairs of British, French, American and Russian boots were on the ground in full control of Germany. The Americans wrote the German Constitution...Nato were the only market for German weapons... without the occupation and all that went with it the words mean nothing... they alone don't prevent the Germans rising again, the utter destruction, partition and occupation do.
  5. Pure revisionism, one country started the last three major European Wars.. 1870,1914 and 1939 and that was Germany/Prussia. Germany was laid waste and divided in 1945 and then West Germany was rebuilt from the ground up mainly by the USA. For the next 50 years Germany could not build a weapon unless for NATO use, or sold with NATO permission. The East was solidly under the control of the Soviets.. hundreds of thousands of Allied and Soviet troops were on the ground in Germany as late as the 1990's...that is what guaranteed the peace.
  6. As Canuk says... 192.com, you'll have to pay a small fee though.
  7. If you don't already know Janice, if you suspect that the chap suggested as a possible by Zaci above is a genuine candidate you can order a Pdf of the death certificate online from the GRO for about £7...ish. They can very useful.
  8. Smedley Butler died in 1940, I'm not sure it has much relevance to Putin's invasion of Ukraine. (Admittedly not having read the book) other than Smedleys actions are similar in nature to the Russian Army now.
  9. Rotherham also switched in 2021, I think most will go that way soon as elections take up so much time and money.... it costs virtually as much to do each one in thirds as all out.
  10. Doncaster switched to all out elections in 2015.
  11. As a matter of interest the phrase ''my country right or wrong'' was an invention of Joseph Goebbels . He told the German people it was a common British saying...I was reading a piece by a German debriefer of British POW's, he had a number of control questions that he put to prisoners, after he'd interviewed a few thousand and none had heard the phrase he began to realise that Goebbels was lying to them.
  12. Tbf many countries have their problems we don't hear about. France has a problem with pesticides from agriculture in it's water. From the Environmental issues in France website. ''The water pollution is one of the major environmental issues in France. It is not as big a problem as it is for more populous countries such as China, but it is still a problem for France and for Europe. According to the a French website called “Public water service”, the water in France is mostly used for Agriculture (68%), Personal usage (24%), and for Industry (8%). About 1.5 million people in France consume polluted water.''
  13. Zakes, could I ask if you ever found the answer? My missus lived on Crossland Place and can remember it happening , the accident was sadly fatal but she is struggling to remember the poor bloke's name.
  14. As did The Royal Standard (was it St Mary's Gate?)... The Royal Oak on Hollis Croft and The Red House on Solly Street.
  15. There is a reason, but not what you're suggesting.... Wards parent company was Vaux Breweries in Sunderland, they suffered a city boardroom coup, the new management wanted to go out of brewing and become a hotel and pub owning chain... Wards had put £5.5m into the coffers in the previous year but they didn't consider it enough, but worse still blocked a bid for a management buyout.. Shameful business.
  16. The article also says ''The government has said its government car service, which provides transport for less senior ministers, will continue to use UK cars. ''
  17. Louise, after pulling my hair out for ages...We know that Felomena Civico was born around 1888, she is in no records I can find as Civico or Romano.... I've come to the conclusion Felomena ( possibly not the correct spelling) was born in Italy and didn't come to Britain until after the 1921 census...it could also be that Romano was not her only married name, she could easily have been widowed twice in those days. The Esther Civico mentioned in the article further up appears to be Restituta Esther Civico, born 1906/7 in Italy according to a tree on Ancestry...backed up by the census return. They are at 24 Scotland St in 1911 One tree suggests that a Paolo Civico was born in Italy around 1870...he could be Filomena's father. Unfortunately I don't have access to Italian records. If you haven't done it yet, the Ancestry Dna test could match you to the exact line, but I think all the Civico's mentioned are related.
  18. Hi Louise...I don't think they were 'in the workhouse' ...as in destitute. I think it's more likely that they were utilising the workhouse infirmary. No 7 Blake House Terrace is a rented house in the Upperthorpe area of Sheffield. In the 1921 Census they seem to be doing OK... W R Hurt is a fitter's labourer employed by Read & Oxley ( engineers) on Watery Lane. Ada is an office cleaner for Tomlinson's funeral directors on Bedford St. J B Hurt is a waiter employed by The Brocco Hotel, Upper Allen St, I've found that after the death of their father... William Rodgers Hurt b 1874, joined the Army territorial Force of the York & Lancaster Regiment, he served in that regiment until 1913. It's highly likely he would be recalled for WW1, but unfortunately over 60% of records were lost in the blitz so it's impossible to check.
  19. In 1821 a row of houses came up for sale at the 'top of Watery Lane, Port Mahon' The earliest I can find it is in 1810, described as Port Mahon near Sheffield. The original Port Mahon is in Minorca.
  20. Mister M, I assume you have taken that headline at face value as I did at first. Actually it's a shocking piece of journalism amounting to the same disinformation you might expect to find in The Mail/Express, except from the other side of the coin. If you look at the graph the journalist relies on as evidence, it tells a completely different story to the headline. In 2016 the true graph shows roughly 31,000 working in the NHS. In 2021 it shows 37,035. He has then shown a projection based on an increase ( at it's sharpest rate) from 2010 to 2014...what The Guardian has ignored is that the rate of increase peaked at the end of 2014 and came down between early 2015 and 2016.. For some inexplicable ( apart from incompetence or dishonesty) reason he has started his projection line in 2015 before the UK even had a referendum on EU Membership and draws a line that mimics an earlier trend. Had he used the truth in the trend he would be forced to conclude that the (two years before the referendum) 2014 to 2016 line would leave us roughly around 34,000...3000 + fewer than we actually have. It's right to point out DE/DM bull...it's also right to acknowledge that the Guardian is not an honest source to be relied on.
  21. It only bought the plant in 2020 and the MD of the company also blamed the pandemic and the war in Ukraine according to the Grimsby press.
  22. Reported yesterday that EU Commissioner Sefcovic is suggesting a new plan for trade between mainland UK and NI with ultra minimal checks except in high risk categories and greater reliance on electronic customs procedures.
  23. I've had exactly the same message...scam.
  24. Perhaps that explains why the bulk of polls are actually wrong.
