  1. I too am pleased that St Lukes have found a new site. FOGP will continue to get my support. St Lukes will have to have a change in top management, not to mention approach, before they get any support from me! Is it too early to say well done Lib Dems this is why I voted for you?
  2. It is fab especially if the weather is good – consider the following: 1.Take a picnic 2.Plan you visit around the daily activities listed on the black boards 3.Check out the annual pass, if you buy with a friend it is really good value, and then you can do the Halloween activities etc.. at minimal cost
  3. Having raised my concerns about the proposed Graves Park Charity Deeds with the Charity Commission and the Trustees I have received the following response from Councillor Scriven. “Thank you very much for your letter with regard to St Luke’s Hospice wishing to move to the Norton Nurseries site in Graves Park and the subsequent redefining of the Charity Deeds. I have already asked that this be reviewed in light of the number of letters I’m receiving on this subject. The proposed scheme does not give the City Council, as Trustee, any new general powers to lease or sell the land and I can assure you, it is not my intention to broaden the use of this land and to water down the original purpose that J G Graves had in mind when leaving this land for the City” I feel confident that work is going on to protect our parkland, I can only hope that this will be sufficient to secure the long-term future of Graves Park in the event that Labour return to office.
  4. My OH encountered this when he got use of a friend’s flat back truck, sign written with builders logo, to dispose of some heavy garden waste. He made an appointment, approval was faxed through and within 30min he was allowed to dispose of the waste. I guess this type of process is inevitable as the cost of disposing of waste properly is on the up. A a couple of years ago a skip cost about £80 now we’re being quoted £150 – so any DIY waste will have to go to the council dump.
  5. I cannot follow your logic. How is Graves Park isolated it is easily accessible and has hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Only a few weeks ago an event at Graves Park attracted a 20,000 crowd. I understand Millhouses Park events are easily visible, the park largely being adjacent to the road, but without parking the event cannot be relying on “passing trade” so must be relying on advertisements which could easily direct people to Graves rather than Millhouses. I can see that the facilities at Millhouses are more suitable and as the event is not being directed at car users a scaled down event may be fine – then again is this not a missed opportunity to attract a wider audience to outdoor pursuits? Note - I do not live anywhere near Millhouses Park
  6. No parking will be a disaster. Tesco’s park and ride can’t have more than a couple of hundred spaces. I don’t think Dore station has many trains stopping there, some on the Manchester route about 1 an hour and they are already overcrowded, not sure if there is much parking but at train stations parking is usually quite expensive. If anything like 10,000 attend I suspect they will go by car to Millhouses and cause gridlock! I truly hope there is more transport options/traffic management than already indicated. I’m definitely not going – don’t want to spend my weekend in a traffic jam or waiting for a bus..
  7. I’d be happy for it to be in Graves Park and it is in my back yard – this is exactly the type of event parks are for - community involvement etc…. Millhouses Park may be technically more suitable but actually it is very small so how this will work practically will be very interesting - hopefully not a disaster. I suspect many of those living at Millhouses may not describe themselves as working class – in spite of what a letter to the Star may indicate! I would quite like to sample some real ale – but where will I park? (OH driving)
  8. The vote in today’s Star is whether the Lib Dems are right to block the hospice move to Graves Park results so far: Yes 59% No 41%
  9. Are you suggesting that a child of 4 –5 years old who gets into trouble due to lack of parental supervision should be given a “good hiding” - if so I sincerely hope you are not a parent or have any control over young children! I work hard at being a responsible parent however over the last few years there have been momentary lapses in controlling my children’s behaviour, but I hope I would never resort to physically punishing a child for my shortcomings.
  10. Has anyone actually been able to get a substantive response to a Freedom of Information request on this subject from the Council – my request is now past the 20-day deadline and the next stage is a complaint. The holding response below could be genuine or a stalling technique. They’ve had 20 working days plus so I don’t see why they could not deal with this. I guess if others are getting information through I could be in a long line but if everyone is getting the same excuses it is just not good enough. “As you are aware this subject is topical and it is therefore the subject of several other requests under both the FOIA 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, but in each case the information requested is slightly different, so the information to be provided is slightly different, with different exemptions, requiring individual examination of the files and the documents contained therein. This means that a queue of requests is building up which the City Council is endeavouring to clear as fast as possible, but as there is only one set of definitive original documents to work from this cannot be speeded up. These documents are also current and as a consequence are also being worked upon by officers not involved in the FOIA /EIR process. This inevitably causes delays. I hope that you will bear with the City council as it works its way through these requests”
  11. If a charity calls on public money, as in the case of a local park, surely the local council supplying the public money (via the tax payer) would need to be represented. Although I see no need for trustees to be exclusively council members - groups with a specific interest in a charities objective could bring something extra that councillors with the many conflicting interests clearly cannot e.g. Graves Park
  12. If you want another alternative give K & S stonemasons on City Road a try. I might have the name slightly wrong they also do headstones – opposite the cemetery so you can’t miss them! I got to choose the piece of granite I wanted from their yard in raw format that was good fun. I found them totally professional and the best value - I went to a few local stonemasons to cut out the middleman. When your comparing prices make sure you check the thickness you’re being quoted for otherwise you can be easily mislead. Happy shopping. Afterthought - it is 3 years since I used them
  13. I tried to get a family of 4 registered with a new dentist – but gave up – I even offered to consider going private if they would take the kids on the NHS but no takers anywhere close to home. We have a dentist but every treatment ends in disaster – including 7 year old having to have extractions under general anaesthetic and very expensive crown falling off within a couple of days - when I raised some concerns they made it clear we all would be removed from their list! I’ll have another go with the suggestions posted
  14. I’m also not very hopeful of getting anything from SCC on this subject in the near future - from my Freedom of information request extract from what looks like a standard reply… “The statutory period for reply begins the day after its receipt and runs for 20 working days, not including any Saturday, Sunday or any Bank Holiday in any part of the United Kingdom…. Please be aware that until the statutory period for reply has expired, the principal duty under the FOIA 2000 has not been breached, and no valid complaint can be made until such breach occurs. The Information Commissioner will not consider any approach until the local appeals and complaints procedures have been exhausted, and you should be aware that currently there is a lead in period of approximately a year between a matter being referred to the Information Commissioner and the investigation commencing into that referral due to the large number of matters currently being dealt with by the Information Commissioner” I hope this means SCC are taking my request seriously and are trying their best to supply the information I have requested as soon as is possible. My cynical side thinks tell me SCC think they have at least a year before they can be held to account…. of course by this time the information I want may well be out of date and of little relevance.
