  1. Hi Folks, sorry I missed it too - I had terrible wisdom tooth ache (although I really am a little old for teething problems! I'll be there on 3 December - can't believe it has been 2 months since I made the last book group!
  2. Hi FOlks, I'm really sorry I didn't make it last night. Various reasons, which I won't go into on here! What was the verdict? I'm still enjoying it, although I found it hard work to get through in a month (I'm about 400 pages in!) particularly now I'm working again (YIKES!) I'll see you, I hope, next month!
  3. I'll be there, although I doubt very much that I'll have finished it - I'm only about 400 pages in so far. See you all on Wednesday!
  4. Not quite Shlg! I think the book was going to be A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thousand-Splendid-Suns-Khaled-Hosseini/dp/0747582971/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221163832&sr=1-1 The one you linked to looked a bit 'interesting'! (PS, sorry I wasn't organised and didn't post these details - last time I tried and got it wrong.)
  5. I finished it about 2 days ago. Good choice by Mocca - I think we'll have lots to discuss. Look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.
  6. Thanks Mocca. I'm a complete idiot. I've changed my post above so it says 3 September now to avoid any confusion! This is why I never organise anything...because I always get it wrong.
  7. Hi tripleg, You and your girlfriend would be welcome to join us - new members are welcome. You don't have to do anything to join, except read the book and turn up ready to have a chat about it! This month's book is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. We'll be meeting at the Red Lion Pub, Charles Street at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3 September. (Look for us in the atrium bit on a big table. We'll usually have a copy of the book on the table too, so you can identify us).
  8. Hello! I think the consensus was that it was what we expected - easy reading with a lot of cardboard characters... What did you think? Next Meeting is going to be on Wednesday 6 August to discuss Notes on an Exhibition by Patrick Gale. The meeting after that will be early September (I can't remember if we agreed a date!) to discuss The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (as chosen by Mocca).
  9. Good work shlg! You are very organised as always! Looking forward to the next one already! Shauna
  10. I've just finished it too. I enjoyed it, although some parts made me feel a bit unwell...I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't finished it (and anyway, it is only because I'm very squeamish)!!
  11. Nice one on the book choice! I'm looking forward to it. And I wouldn't worry about getting approval - my choice got mixed reviews!
  12. I'm really enjoying it too. I sometimes fell like Death goes on a bit, but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment too much!
  13. You should be very proud of finishing it! I've managed to finish it too - but I had too as I picked it! Looking forward to Thursday. Shauna
  14. Thanks very much Alex! I'm off on holiday for a week from tomorrow, but hopefully I'll see you down there some point after that! Looking forward to it Shauna
  15. Hi ALex WOuld it still be possible to come along and try this, or is it too late in the season to start? I'd be a beginner, although I did do some field stuff at school (looong time ago now though!) I'd like to try something different and I did used to enjoy it! Thanks! Shauna
  16. Oh no! Not a good sign. I'll force myself to read it all as I was the one who suggested it (not that I knew what I was letting everyone in for!) At least we can spend the evening moaning about it and picking it apart! Sorry about that... Shauna
  17. Hmmm - I've only just started it so I'll have to let you know later. I hope it isn't too dull though...
  18. I'm pretty sure I'd have lowered my eyes like the rest of them. I loved the sense of unease and tension through the whole book, and the relationship between Mathilda and Watts.
  19. Hi everyone, I'm really sorry - I didn't make it last night. I got stuck in North Yorks with a broken down car. I only got home at about 9pm. Nightmare! That said, I really really loved the book so thank you for choosing it Pupster. I'll be happy to join you in a recap next time Jem as I was also looking forward to discussing it too. I'll definitely (car allowing!) be there for the next one though. Shauna
  20. I now have my copy too and I'm taking it to Venice with me tomorrow so i'll be definitely be done by next week. I look forward to seeing everyone then! Shauna
  21. Hi all Many thanks for making me feel very welcome last night! As discussed (on here and last night), this month's book will be Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. The discussion/meeting will take place on 12 March at 7.30pm in The Red Lion, Charles Street. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is no vortex in this one! The book for the month after that will be Brick Lane by Monica Ali - to be discussed/slammed at a date in April to be decided! See you all on 12 March... Shauna
  22. I've read the book and will be there on Wednesday. I'm a newcomer but looking forward to it.
  23. Thanks for all your suggestions everyone - I look forward to trying them all!!
