  1. Good call, I had forgotten the carpet man, he used to have carpets & rugs hung over the railings, if he did that now he would spend most of his time chasing runaway carpets up Manor Lane.

I am struggling to remember the vicars name, but him and his wife used to act as foster parents, and one story that was related to me was about a young lad who had been dropped on them when his mother was rushed into hospital, and at breakfast he was given Weetabix which he hadn't had before, the Vicars wife asked him why he didn't eat it and he came back with "cos it looks like a lump of ****" to this day that lad affects my choice of cereals :)

I used to help the carpet man unload his van, his name was John and a lady who I think was his aunty used to come with him. They came from the Leeds area each Saturday and sometimes on a tue or wed evening.

  2. Are there any fun fairs in sheffield or surrounding areas this easter/ bank holiday weekend. there was one in graves park last year but can't seem to find any for this easter weekend

The nearest at the moment is at Doncaster Dome car parks. There should be one at Hillsborough Park in the next few weeks.

Farrar's Funfair will be visiting Hillsborough Park from 16 - 20 April.

  3. If you are putting a batton on a new type house that has been dry lined [ plaster boards.] unibond wall / no nails on batton and plug and screw./ So to be safe pr-drill baton .then offer batton to wall re drill to through batton to mark holes in wall - plugs will then be in correct place. Then unibond wall put no nails on batton. In plaster board walls put the red screw type plugs in plaster board. Dont forget to counter sink screws in wood .

Check there are no hidden water pipes, a friend of mine did this the other week and drilled straight into a water pipe.

  4. I remember two Marsden's milk bars I used the one on Pinstone Street when I worked on the Trams in 1955, and the second was on a street just above Fitzallan Square, (Can't remember if that's how you spell it) this street was leading on to Howard Street near to where the Crucible Theatre is now.

I can't remember that name either I have been away from Sheffield too long.

What I do remember on a winters day they made the best Horlicks.

reference to my earlier reply I have just remembered the name where the second Marsden's milk bar was,, Change Alley.

The Brains not as bad as I thought.

Change Alley?, no longer there, my late Grandma worked there in the late 1950's, early 1960's.

  5. The arcade is Lawrence Appleton's Stardust Arcade, it is members of this family who operate this bar that was at Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland last year. There is a picture of it in both styles on allthefunofthefair web site under arcades.

The pumps etc are probably hired and the drinks will be purchased when required. Not sure what happens to the surplus.

  6. Its at Crookes selling show shovels, have you not seen it?

Actually it is owned and operated by a well known Eastern Counties based fairground family and will be used as an amusement arcade on the travelling fairground circuit until it is converted into a Sleigh Bar again if required.

  7. Is the city giving free parking and or normal daytime trams bus schedule to go with it to make it all work?

Oh no, of coarse not, they are stupid?

It might not be what you want but better than nothing.

On Sunday’s throughout the Christmas Period you can park at council owned on-street or off-street car parks for £1 all day

Free parking after 2pm on council car parks , 3 Sat's in December.

  8. I know a few of the people on various stalls and rides and they all commented that they were disappointed with the turn out. Perhaps 4.30 was too early for the main attractions to finish as in the past fright night went on later. Also there did not seem as many people who made the effort to dress up.
