  2. Never herd of the loo story before (was there 65 to 71) I remember girls taking boys in the upper yard toilets. Just can't remember what they did to me
  3. Bains Yorkshire a directory for 1822 lists Ward William, Jobsmith & Engineer, at 17 Broad Street Park. Also some of them might be burried outside the area of the Park at Gleadless Church. There is also a John Samuel Ward and his family at Intake Cem. He was connected with the church at Intake and probaly the Park 'Wards' lot. I can give the details on him if you need it.
  4. Do you know that there was an open air swimming pool at Bowden Woods, it was uncovered when the built the Mosborough Parkway. Also try Sheffield Growth of a City by H Keeble Hawson Try 'Manor and Woodthorpe Review' it might have something on the baths at Woodthorpe. All in LS.
  5. There was no pit on the Pipworth site, the nearest would be over where Manor Park Center is. Maybe they used it to level the field or perhaps natural. By the way if you dig up coal in your back garden on in this area it belongs to (I think) the ancestors of The Nunnery Colliery, or the NCB, or whatever it is now.
  6. Better off Ask Richard Branson he fiddle his tax or read his book
  7. Your Quick I was still editing it! NO I'm saying that a choice has to be made from bitting the hand that feeds you and revenge. It's his choice the bloke that saw the person possibly working. I would make sure first in his case. No I would not report him myself, the system is open to abuse because it's wrong.
  8. Bang them up in prison then. Only build them first! Raise the Council Tax and Income Tax put VAT on food to pay for the costs and to pay for the Social Workers for the family of the man in prison and the new prison, built to EEC standards of course! Employ more call centre staff, to deal with the hotline, they must be overworked if the adverts are working. Chase people who claim the JSA and the others, use the police, do they need to chase rapists? And put more money in the court system so some judge can laugh at the working class. Chop his finger off. they used to do it in the past. They use to put a big P (on you) for pauper for being poor, sugest bring it back to some tory MP. Hanging true story.. Pickpocket being hanged in London, he dies, but the judge watching had his watch nicked!
  9. Yes and Jobcentre staff abide by the rules. Hypocrite
  10. What's going on? There's now 3 Hurlfield threads running in the first two pages all about the same thing I'm getting confused now? Can someone sort out this mess and close any that seem to be dead?
  11. Have just watched the German top 100 on Viva and Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love is a new entry at number one in Germany.
  12. I was being a bit sarcastic, the forumers might have to get use to that from me from time to time! Anyway the reply thing hadn't got one of these to put on! Your dead lucky with the replies to your threads some already on the Wards. When I do them sod all:cry: Except Bus seats!
  13. Was Mr Lancaster there when you went? Do any other pre 1973 leavers remember him?
  14. Something that didn't do me any good was catching Scarlet Fever from a Ladybird Book of Trains. I was allowed to take it home, but the last kid that had it was sick. When the School found out I was ill, they sent a big van and two blokes in protective clothing came to our door, made my mum pop it in a plastic bag and then they chucked it in the back of the van!
  15. Hope you lot don't mean me! If you care to check my public profile you will see that I am historian. The local studies is great. I've been going there since 1978, researching Sheffield Park and the Parish of Handsworth. So I should know more than most people. But there are a lot more rules now in there and many Local Historians will tell you that they have been looking for a picture of something for years and somebody they meet (who's never used LS before) shows them a picture they got from there, that the Local historian has never seen before. That Wards I know nothing about, because it doesn't fall in the area. Incidently a picture of the Slag Heap at Manor Top is on there web site and that wasn't in the box of photo's for Manor! (case in point).
  16. You might be interested in my comments on JSA in the Thread How do the unemployed afford luxires
  17. I quite agree:thumbsup: and therfore the above and this message are the last from Me. I'm signing off! AGAIN!
  18. You know what I never thought I would be got at by disability person when I started attacking those who think that living on a system of poverty is easy. You remember the laughing job centre story. What I didn't say is they made an interview for me in the end. I thought I might get some help for a change, rather than being told to apply for £3.00 per hour jobs, which you never got even a reply from. Turns out this guy had just been transfered up from London and wasn't to pleased about it. Anyway rather than any real help all he was bothered about was adding more job codes rather than 999 to my agreement. You should know what that is. He then said 'what about static security? (TV closed circuit operators)'. 'Fine' I said. He then said 'not many jobs and last time 5'000 applied for one post'. He put it on my ES3 as 615. And as I was explaining my physical problems as to why I was having a problem seeking work, and he said to me 'can't put them all down as you will make yourself unavailable for work and you won't get any money'. Don't tell that's a lie cause I've got the damm thing in front of me! But that's not the end of the story. The next time I went to sign, they had made a compulsory appointment with the team at Rockingham Gate. There the first thing we did (5 people there) was take a test from a book that was so old it was clearly used to test demobed soldiers. Clearly the origins of the service. During the tea break. I noticed on the noticeboard a circular from the ES. It was telling staff not to threaten to call the police when claiments are angry. They told one guy who couldn't sit comfotably to work in computers. He said I don't want to... and they argued with him. Then I told them I was slow with my hands. The chap in charge said 'rep strain you've got'. No I said only when I try work to fast with my hands. 'Rep strain' he said again... 'We'll see about getting you placed with an employer'. The catch then came 'you'll do a full-time job and get your benefit plus bus fare on top of it. 'Proper employer' I said. 'Yes' he said 'you will be just like the regulars for a few weeks'. I never returned to them or JSA since and I would never. Is that your kind of job, NO it's different now your gonna say... Anyway know more about you now. You said it 'money'. If that's what your after then firms with better cars and salaries need to deal with disabiled people because the government is making a growth market out it. You must be overworked now with the sick being sent to Jobcentres. I won't comment on the other points you made. It must be boring for other users to see pages of the same points, over and over. We are begining to sound like MPS. "I'll refer to what I said in a previous statement".
  19. Do you mean Ward's the beer makers? T W Ward at Windy would have been out by around 1926, He could have been related, but I doubt he set up any firms. By the way the farm at Windy was 210 acres! The brew people were allready around in the 1920's I think? 'Ward' as a name was from the Old English for watchman. So would have been a common name. You could start a new thread about what happened to the Ward family of farmers after the Manor Estate was built? More info on the Birley pits. The 'East' pit was sunk in 1889 and was 779 foot deep. South pit was abandoned 1907 it was only 417ft deep.
  20. Apperently it's even worse on the inside! I was speaking to a woman who was going to send her kid there and she was bragging about how they locked outside doors, after the bell and gave all the kids contracts to sign and if they broke rules, such as talking in class, could be expelled! She thought it was wonderfull. Sounds like a Day Jail for kids to me!
  21. It wasn't a Sheffield thing about the NF. I remember them being disrupted and they said it was about someone in London, I think! Unions are on the whole are left-wing, so that is a poor argument. Otherwise they would be all funding the Tory party. I think you are missing the point here. JSA is just what a NF person would try to infiltrate, for reason that should be obvious even to you. Of course they are only a small segiment of our culture and even in the Employment Service would be less than a few percent of staff. The fact that any are there (if any) says everything about benefits system in this country. One is an outrage. You will have to elaborate further on what's wrong! Some of what I said is personal as I keep telling you and some is research, often from books by the departments involved. Please take off your rose-tinted glasses of the benifits system. Since center-right parties have been in power they have destroyed the welfare state in a false belief that benefits are damaging this country. Most people would call you a do-good-a. But I hate that term myself. Some people think they are doing the right thing, but it's generally for all the wrong reasons. I would put you in this box. If you have been helping people as you say. Then don't be a planner and go and work for the advice service. You will get greater job satisfaction and nobody will attack you again.
  22. Lot's of Ward's in the park area. The most famous was Thomas Asline Ward connected to a book called 'Peeps into the past'. The farmers in the Sheffield Park area where all just about related and the Ward's had a farm called Park House Farm that was demolished in 1934 to make way for the Arbourthorne estate.
  23. The 1906 OS map shows tips from the Birley Pit in the spot you say was Red Hill. From your description it could have been Red Sandstone and natural, possiably dug up by mineworking. If it was you were scatterring a prehistoric beach, from when Sheffield was truly by the sea! That's why it's called Sandstone. Stone made from beach sand!
  24. Used to live in one! And rumours are around that houses are going up soon! Has anyone got contracts for building?
  25. Red shale may have been clay workings. If they were orange like rust then it was iron. Not to clear what area you mean. The Shire brook area to Springs had the Birley Coll in it and it had brick works in it. There was another pit at Intake below Fox Wood that had gone by 1906. Any of them could have dumped it. The brook next to Springwood pub is orange because of iron, was it that kind of colour these shales?
