  1. Anybody remember or know where they were assembled in Sheffield? It was during the 20's so I don't think there'll be many around who remembers them. They were originally a rail car, but I found a picture of one on Hull docks, loaded with fish, and I realised I'd never heard of them.

Shefflex, I believe was on Rutland Rd about halfway down on left hand side, we used to have Shefflex lorries on the bins, they were notorious for throwing the bins over the top of the lorry

Can I put a photo on here without having to put it on Photobucket? If so how can I do it please? Copying it doesn't seem to work - tried it with photo of Grimesthorpe Rd chapel.

  4. Hi they lived on Bland St Kenny,Maureen,Carol. Dad Sam, Elsie.Wife.

Carol, that's it memory keeps going blank, lol, yes they lived next door to my Grandma, Ada Hudson , I lived 6 doors down, Kenny used to live round corner from me , Richmond, but I know he moved, he also married one of the Morgans who lived next door to my wife, Josie

  5. Maybe he originated from that area when I married is sister they lived on P/X he had a brother called Sam, and he did keep the pub on Derbyshire Lane think it was Cross Sythes.

a Kenny Sheldon lived in the next yard to me in Grimesthorpe, he had two sisters, one was Maureen, the older one wont come to mind at moment,

  6. Was looking at pic of you and Josey from 84 after refurbishment at Arbourthorne pub, never knew you ran it Terry.

would that be the picture of the re-opening with the football players? yes we were the first managers in there, as it was always a tenancy before, we were in about 4 yrs, after moving from The Roman Ridge, and after Arbour we went in Timbertop ps that photo comes a lot inthe Star retro, it is also the first picture in a book called Sheffield landlords and Landladies

  7. Thanks everyone for your replies and the Hodson Photo. I've been trying for a while to complete a photographic record of Grimesthorpe's pubs and now just need The Crown.

I believe there was The Dolphin pub, possibly at the bottom of Draper Street. That's been mentioned on here but don't expect to find a photo of it.

my friend, Keith Hicks used to live in what was the Dolphin, I remember seeing n old door in their outhouse with the name engraved in the glass

  8. Hi stpetre,

Thanks for that. I realise that Sharp street was just below Botham Street.

Was the crown just out of shot on the left of the first pic below? Looks like a shop on the right. The only trace of Sharp Street now in existence, as far as I am aware, is the small round ironwork in the middle of the street near the bottom of pic. It's now surrounded by concrete in a business yard. There's a similar one on Adsetts Street where I lived. Possibly a fire hydrant cover??.....

    Peter.

correct, The Crown was on the left, the shop on the right was Dougies barber shop

  9. Quite right he he Joe Bothamley did run the chippy along with his wife who was the daughter of Mrs Smith, I do believe he was a builder, I seemed to remember they bought a house at Woodhouse Mill next door to the working man's club. I'm not sure but I think it was the couple who had "The Prince of Wales " on Adsetts St surname of Shaw applied to be steward there. It was the name of the people who had the chippy after them who's name I can't remember. This was the early 60's . Jean J

Would that have been the "Turleys" They used to have the shop at the corner of Bland St and Carlisle Rd,then moved there, I used to knockabout with their son Graham

  10. I am looking for anyone who may be able to provide detailed information about a children's novelty song, probably from the 1950s or 60s, titled "What's At The Top Of A Rainbow". Any takers?

can#t find that one, but found " What's at the top of a sunbeam" if that#s any help

  11. hiya all, first time poster but as a lad lived on Hawkshead road, jusl off Holywell Road until 1957 where I was friends with John Dyson, Rob Prescott and Stephen Richards and others, anyone remember these names? attended Owler lane school and was subjected to what we called "Monkey Run" for all new boys. used to be a grocery shop on the corner of Upwell Street and Carlisle street owned by Mrs. lemm and she had two sons Brian and Trevor anyone remember this?

think you might mean Keith & Trevor Lemm, sadly Keith passed away a couple of weeks ago, I used to be at school with Robert Prescott

  12. Hello Brian. The photo of Owler Lane School's bell tower was originally posted on the forum by another ex pupil, David Watkinson. I haven't seen the location of it myself but seem to remember Dave saying it's at Owler Brook Primary School on Wensley Street.

The last I saw of it was athttps://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.4073299,-1.4466609,85m/data=!3m1!1e3 owler lane [n the middle of the island in the school

  13. Bumped into an old Grimesthorpe lad this afternoon in the Benjamin Huntsman, Billy Smith, I think he lived near 'Tfishcake' top Grimesthorpe.

yes, he lived in same yard as me, he was Lincoln Place, I was Bland St, we also knocked about together on scooters, our group was called "The Untouchables"

  14. Recently both pubs have been demolished a sad reflection of the decline of the pub trade nationwide. Both the Elm Tree and the Arbrouthorne were Tudor style pubs and I'm guessing were originally Stones brewery pubs as the style was their house design in the 1920s/30s . I went in the Arbrouthorne a few years back its was OK a open plan bar design, I never went in the Elm Tree sadly, Iv been told it had quite a few rooms though while photoing the demolition gave a glimpse of the inside. What do you remember of these pubs any notable bands or notable landlords for example?

Joe Cocker was a regular in the 60s at the weekly talent nights, I was landlord there in the early 80s, I was the first manager to take it after it being a tenancy, they completely refurbished it soon after I took it,
