    The building has long gone - I think it was somewhere near what is now The Pines estate

    However, I went to fix things there a number of times, and I recall a longish drive with a car park at the end.

     

    Funny I would have thought a lot more people would know of it. I guess there are people who were employed there reading this who choose not to disclose that which is ok, I am just curious.

     

    Does anyone have a streetmap from the late '70s??

    Way back in the early '80s, there used to be some kind of animal testing lab near Lodge Moor Hospital (down a drive off of Blackbrook Rd, possibly Lodge Moor Rd).

     

    I was just reading about BIBRA (an old animal testing company) and it reminded me, but I cannot find anything about it. Anyone got any photo's or knowledge? Exact location etc? I seem to remember there used to be vandalism in protest against the nature of the work but the local residents suffered - phone lines cut and cars damaged etc

     

    Or did I imagine all this????

    Many years ago there was a hardware/fishing tackle shop opposite the Elm Tree pub on the Manor. The owner was called Jack James. I'm sure he lived on Fretson Rd and drove a green Ford Pop

     

    He was a shrewd old fella - quite happy to sell you something more expensive than you wanted/needed. The upstairs tackle shop is still clear in my mind. My memories of him are from ~40yrs ago.

     

    But I once heard that his real name was John. (John/Jack seem to be interchangable). And I'm sure his shop had J. E. James on the front.

     

    Is he (or was he) then anything to do with J. E. James cycles?? The founder of that shop was a John James and it celebrated it's 50 years this year (from website).

    Nearly there mate

     

    Remove the line ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ATM0.1 and add the line ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 dialer0

     

    Your problem comes from 255.0.0.0 mask. This means that the other end will be in a quandary as to what to do with the return traffic as you are one in 16 million addresses in that 81.x.x.x range. The interface wont take that 32 bit mask, so I think you have been misled by the ISP. Try this

     

    Configure a loopback interface

     

    conf t

    int loop0

    ip address 81.174.133.36 255.255.255.255

     

    remove the ip address form dialer0 then refer to the loopback

     

    int dialer0

    no ip address

    ip unnumbered loop0

     

    and see how you go with that

     

    If ok save the config! ;-0

    You've got the answer - very comprehensive too, only mod I'd suggest is try and co-locate your home pc and wifi router, then you can have a mix of (tidy) cable from home pc to router, and wifi to laptop and ps3

     

    I have had many issues with dropouts and the USB wifi sticks. It's all that "usb port down low on the back where it's screened by earthed metal" shenannigins. Trust me you don't want to start getting metal sieves and pringles tubes out.

     

    The inbuilt laptop versions are much better, same with ps3/wii inbuilt adapters

    Try the live cd. No install, runs from the (booted) cd. Comes with a load of stuff free. Try and live with it rather than adapt it to your windows lifestyle. You still have access to your hard disk for documents etc via OpenOffice. Want to save docs?? install it on a cheap 2/4G USB and boot from that.

     

    Google for usb ubuntu persistence for info on how to retains settings etc between reboots. BTW this is much less resource hungry than using a virtual machine in windows.

    search for a portable apps gimp version and put it on a USB stick. No install! Hey it's almost like OSX!

     

    (for others) GIMP is GNU Image Manipulation Program and GIMPshop is an attempt to make it look and feel like Adobe Photoshop. Same features as GIMP just a different front end.

    GNU refers to the free software foundation http://www.fsf.org/

    Firefox without Java support?? You may mean JavaScript (absolutely no connection to Java) but Firefox offers full support for that too. You may have them turned off which will cause you problems. Give it another chance. I use it daily on Linux, OSX and XP - it's the business!

     

    regarding Chrome, the whizzo new kid on the block. If you are a firefox user or have it installed, look in the program directory (Program Files| Mozilla Firefox on XP or /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS in OSX for example) See a folder with a curious name there??

     

    For those who don't have it, Firefox has a Chrome folder. I don't know what the relationship is, but don't tell me it's a coincidence. Anyone know??

     

    (The contents are the Java classes for the environment)

    Hi mate

    I know a bit about Cisco and routing ;-) but apologies, my game is the bigger boxes and command line stuff so I don't profess any intimacy with SDM and 8xx series though I know what they are.

     

    So your DSL int is up, and you can obviously get to the router. You don't say if you get your address via dhcp or static, but either way from what you say it is expecting a default route.

     

    What this means is that your pc, when you try and communicate, looks at the target address, and establishes if it's on the same network. If so it sorts it. If not it needs to know where to send it (default gateway).

     

    Same with the router. It knows about it's LAN int, but what does it do with anything else? (default route)

     

    It has to send it to the gateway on the other end of the WAN link. So your route should be something like this, <dest address> <mask> <where to send it>

    I dunno which boxes in SDM you'll enter them in but try this

     

    0.0.0.0 (that's the target address - I know it looks odd)

    0.0.0.0 (that's a wildcard mask to mean anything)

    ADSL or ATM0 or whatever (your outgoing interface)

     

    if the outgoing interface was ATM0, then via the command line i'd do the following

    connect to router

    enter enable mode

    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 atm0

     

    and save the config

    Hope this helps, but if you have further issues, PM me your config, and I'll wheel SDM out and help you with it

    Hmm it's a tough one. I would suggest that if you know your PC stuff, save your training budget, just do the sadikhov stuff and get through the (or some) exams. Do the CCNA too and maybe a Prof trail such as Design, (CCDP) or IPT (CCVP) or security (CCSP).

     

    If you can run to it, the CISSP which is easy but expensive (6 hour exam £500)

     

    Also any project management training along with IT stuff will pay dividends - ITIL or PRINCE2. You may get funding for this from the LEA depending on circumstances.

     

    Get Dynagen (freeware) and learn large scale networking with multiple (>10) devices, MPLS, OSPF, EIGRP, PKI, VPNs and CCM express. You can also do some switching with that too.

    Understand product lines and standards as reuseability and conformance have become key factors.

     

    Then try and get some contract work (try Hayes) to build your CV, which will allow you to ultimately pick your jobs. You need to snowball your CV, start small let it grow fast before the thaw.

     

    You'll find networking, IPT and security certs much more useful in securing contract work. I've been in a large corp IT doing International network design/delivery for a long (14 yrs + 18 doing other things there) time now, we rarely choose microsoft guys over networking guys. If they have both, MS isn't a decider

    Thanks Lostrider, not sure that makes it any better, as an atheist, I'd prefer the axe! Was he naked? If so I'd have taken my chance with the bare feet.

     

    As I said, I was completely unaware at the time and it was 31 ish years ago, but I can still remember how nervous and tense she was. We both had to press ID to the glass and show her the works instruction before she would open the door (internal, half glazed with about 3mm glass - axe/bible/nutjob proof?)

     

    p.s. It may have partly been due to my appearance (wild eyed hairy etc)

    Once went for a meal with about 12 peeps there (always good stuff) in the very early '80s. The days of 'Miami Vice' rolled up sleeves and canvas shoes. Ordered a meal which invlved a kebab of some description. The waitress spilled my drink, then stood on my foot. Later she came to collect the plates, dropping the skewer which, (I can't use the term embedded, really), landed in the same foot. I hobbled upstairs expecting compensation in the shape of a 'close' dance, but she refused. A sort of staff and customer thing (I like to console myself with)

    Yoawch I thought this was an urban myth! In 1977 I was working as an apprentice and went with my colleague to do some work there. We tipped up and the lady was securely locked in the office and wouldn't open the door until we'd shown her ID and paperwork for the job we'd come to do. As a callow lad, I suggested to my hoppo that she may have been a bit of a nutjob, but he told me (he lived on Cough Rd round the corner at the time) how her predecessor had been cleaning up when a b*&*&ck naked chap trotted up behind her with an axe. I've never heard much more than anecdotes about this

    I mentioned this in an earlier post, but it seems some others have hinted that Mrs Pilgrim was at thet school for ages. Can anyone come back with earliest recollections of her? She didn't seem overly aged when I was there (left in '71) she still used to prance around the maypole in the hall. She also took me for handwriting (as mentioned) and sewing (!!) where I promptly made an owl that looked like a brown cabbage.

     

    Now woodwork. Who still has a boot puller offer? I also made a rattle but put the noise bits on the wrong side so that you had to spin it the wrong way. Was it Paul Kenny who made a Zither? Flash ble***r

    Man Shepherd was tops. He had a funny way of disciplining you. He would make you hold your hand out then make a Karate chop hand but bent into a right angle and then hit you. The best advice was to pretend it hurt like hell.

     

    I remember a Mrs Veal as well who used to make large bits of bread in the shape of wheatsheaves for harvest festival.

     

    Note with interest the talk of Mr Hill as head - I thought it was Mrs Biddulph? Help me out here chaps. Who was Mrs Drury as well? Did she have a son at school?

     

    Also remember the Xmas parties where you brought a plate & cutlery with your name on and donated something like chocolate teacakes or orange jelly. Seem to remember someone brought peas

     

    Also remember painting with yellow paint that smelled of rotten fruit.

     

    Why can I remember all this from so long ago, but can't remember anything useful?
