  1. Me again! Code13 has asked me to vote on his behalf for Franklyn.
  2. Yes, I was discussing the options with code13 last night, and he seemed to think that Genova probably wasn't your sort of film!
  3. I haven't seen it yet. Must rectify that!
  4. The winners I'm pleased to note that two of my favourites, Man On Wire and Milk have won stuff. Opinions, anyone?
  5. Well, the Academy has obviously been reading this thread, as two of our favourites have done very well in the Oscars: Milk won Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, and Man On Wire won Best Documentary Feature. Edited to add: the March Showroom programme is out. At a glance, I'd like to see Il Divo; Genova; Two Lovers; Age of Stupid; The Class; Franklyn; The Reader; Flame & Citron; The Exorcist .... I don't really want to see The Exorcist. Any thoughts, anyone?
  6. Sorry, Tom, we did change plans at pretty short notice. Do you want to suggest a date and/or film for the next meet?
  7. I'm not sure I can hack another book that long, so soon after the trauma of The Northern Clemency. Code13's asked me to suggest Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks - it's a James Bond novel: Sebastian Faulks "writing as Ian Fleming". 320 pages! Any thoughts? I am biased because I love the Bond books anyway. Edited to add: In other news, I started Walk the Blue Fields last night, and by the time I got to work this morning I was a third of the way through the book. A refreshing change!
  8. Well, there were four of us last night, and we ranged from hating the film (code13) to loving it (serenachic) - I think maels and I were in between. Anyone want to suggest a date and/or film for the next meet? And lobby the Showroom for good films to start between 6.30 and 7pm? Mondays are particularly good for me, but I'm open to suggestions.
  9. I think it looks like we're going to the early one - and maybe sorting out another meet for quite soon because there hasn't been much notice for this one. I will be at the Showroom at 5.45 tomorrow, anyway! Hope to see some of you there.
  10. 16th is fine for me and for code13. How about anyone else?
  11. If it suited other people, it'd actually be quite convenient for me if we moved the meeting to Monday 16th or 23rd (Wednesdays are not as good for me as they used to be) - but only if it suits the rest of you. I note that Vicky Cristina Barcelona is on at 17.55 as well, which is more like our usual start time. There don't seem to be any showings of Revolutionary Road at times that would suit us.
  12. Not that you have strong feelings either way, eh? I think I'm glad I'll miss Mrs Dalloway... but am considering reading The Eyre Affair, just to catch up with the general hate vibe.
  13. It'd be great to see you there, Suzanna. We'll be hanging around the box office at about 5.55pm. I'm a woman with short, red, curlyish hair.
  14. Mocca, sorry to miss your last book group, but I will catch up with you on Saturday. I'm afraid I'm going to miss the February meeting, folks - have managed to double-book myself - but I have already bought the book for March, so will definitely see you then!
  15. I fail! I haven't read enough of the book to discuss it (260 pages in), and I've got lots to do for work and cleaning up after a plumber... so I'm not going to make it tonight. Have fun, kids.
  16. I finally saw the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still this weekend, and it's a completely different film from the original (different characters, and some of the characters that stayed had very different moral positions; some very different plot elements, etc.), but it is a pretty good film. My girlfriend hadn't seen the original and thought the remake was excellent. I haven't dared watch the remake of The Italian Job.
  17. OK, I think that's fixed, then. We're going to see Milk at 6.05pm on Wednesday 28th January at the Showroom, meeting at 5.55pm by the box office. Newcomers always welcome, as are people who've been before and drifted away!
  18. Hi essjay You'd be very welcome (even to the January meeting if you can read 700 pages by Wednesday!). The date hasn't been set for the February meeting, but I suspect it's likely to be 11th.
  19. code13's asked me to say that Weds 28th would be best for him, so unless anyone speaks up today, shall we fix it for then?
  20. Mon 26th, Wed 28th or Thurs 29th January would suit me: how about anyone else? It's on at 6.05pm on those days.
  21. It's Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Wolf (a nice, thin book!). I don't think we set a date, but 11th Feb would be four weeks from the January meeting.
  22. Had a great holiday so far, but have still barely started on the Northern Clemency! Aagh! I'd better get speed-reading... Happy New Year, all!
  23. Yep, Weds 14th. I'm a whole 35 pages in! I know how I'll be spending my Christmas holiday...
  24. I was wondering about that on the way home, too: the only explanation I could think of was that 'Blood Ties', which would have been the most obvious translation of the French title, 'Les Liens Du Sang', is already in use for a TV series and could have caused confusion. That still doesn't explain why they picked 'Rivals', specifically, though.
  25. Just a reminder that the next meet is this Wednesday. Newcomers welcome. I'll be in the bar from about 5pm; otherwise, we meet by the box office about 10 minutes before the film.
